Art Talks DON’T MISS THE BELOVED STORY OF

The Conklin House community room was filled with many residents who attended BVAC’s first ART TALKS: Go Girl- Women Artists. The presenters were Joy Weiner, Director of Education and Public Programs and Kristina Schaaf, Associate Director of Education both from the Heckscher Museum of Art. The interactive art discussion focus on women in the arts - comparing many art styles and changing art forms within the context of women’s roles in society.

On May 23rd BVAC with speakers Joy Weiner and Kristina Schaaf Art Talks: Long Island artists Max Weber and Esther Solododkino. Max Weber, Long Island artist, was among the most influential American artists of the 20th century. Although celebrated today for introducing Cubism to America, he was better known for Cezanneinspired works from the 20s and 30s and his lyrical expressionism. Esther Slododkina was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group

and pioneer in American Abstraction. She executed works in all media, and is widely known as the author and illustrator of the children’s book Caps for Sale. Art Talks will begin at 7 p.m. at the Conklin House. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is hosting its 4th annual Builder’s Breakfast on Thursday, May 17th at Stonebridge Club in Smithtown. This will be an opportunity for Habitat to say “Thank you!” to the companies, CEOs and Executives that participated

in the first ever CEO Build – raising the walls of two new Habitat homes in Bay Shore. The Builder’s Breakfast is also an opportunity to invite friends and associates so that they can also learn more about Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s program. Reservations can be made

Hot ‘n Cold ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

If you have not yet taken the time to dwell at Argyle Park, do it quickly. The trees have blossomed and it is absolutely breathtaking! Sadly, the massive fire on the east end of the village took a toll on a number of businesses. Our hearts go out to those who suffered damage, with sincere hopes that they will recover quickly, and return better than ever! A special salute goes out to The Babylon F.D. and all the departments who assisted. As bad as the fire was, they kept it from becoming a much larger disaster. I noticed workers breaking

ground at the future site of the Baymen’s statue just the other day. The statue, designed by noted Long Island artist Kathy Herzy, will be an exciting addition to our village and a fitting tribute to the heritage of our community and the Great South Bay. The Argyle Theatre debuted with a Donna Summer tribute, and by all accounts, the theatre got rave reviews! Heartfelt congratulations to Mark and Dylan Perlman on seeing their vision come to fruition. As a former Sky Masterson, I can’t wait to see Guys & Dolls!

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping.
