TROOP 104 ARROW OF LIGHT - On Sunday, April 25th, 20212 Cub Scout troop 104 held their Arrow of light ceremony whereas those scouts crossed the bridge and became members of troop 2014. The ceremony was held at the Argyle Marina Gazebo in Babylon Village. Councilman McSweeney was on hand and told the scouts “This is one of many accomplishments you will achieve in life. Always remember on this journey when you thought it was tough and would not be able to achieve, you did. Today, you are here with friends and family to celebrate your accomplishment and move on to the next journey in scouting.

Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

We enjoy having you there too.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

BABYLON FIRE DEPARTMENT MOURNS LOSS OF PAST CHIEF - Earlier this month, Suffolk County Fire Rescue suffered the loss of Babylon Fire Department Past Chief and 53 year member Brad Maier. Chief Maier also served as a Deputy Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services, and currently served as a County Deputy Fire Coordinator and photographic contributor to FireNews. Chief Maier left a lasting impact on firefighting throughout Babylon and all of Suffolk County, and he will surely be missed.

BABYLON CENTRAL FIRE ALARM HONORS LONG TIME DISPATCHER - On the afternoon of Saturday, April 3rd, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Babylon Central Fire Alarm and Rescue Alarm Corporation and other local officials to recognize the achievements of long time Dispatcher Ronnie Kestenbaum. At 3:00pm that afternoon, Ronnie walked out of the Babylon Central office after his regular Saturday tour for the final time, marking the end of his more than 50 years of service to the Town of Babylon, its first responders, and its residents. As one of Babylon Central’s most senior staff members, Ronnie became known as a great teacher and role model for his fellow dispatchers, and is known throughout the Town for his calm demeanor- most notably in disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, several blackouts, and other massive firefighting operations. And as if 50 years behind the console wasn’t enough, Ronnie will continue to serve others with the North Lindenhurst Fire Department, where he volunteers. Congratulations Ronnie on your retirement, and thank you for all you’ve done to keep our citizens and first responders safe and informed! Beneﬁts Of Volunteering Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.
