Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation

MATH-A-THON - Students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School, located in North Babylon, participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon. Mrs. Kreuscher, a First Grade teacher, was the coordinator who ran the event. There were over 50 children who took part in completing challenging math problems, getting sponsors, and collecting donations. The children raised $6,740 and all the money goes to St. Jude to help children who are battling cancer. All their help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for making a difference!

Suffolk County Community College’s Dennisse Madrigal of Babylon has been named a recipient of the prestigious 2015 Programma Ponte Scholarship sponsored by the AIAE (Association of Italian American Educators) and will travel to Rome, Italy this June. The Programma Ponte is a four-week program of

study in Rome that offers a unique academic, cultural, and linguistic opportunity for exceptional students of Italian American heritage. Dennisse, who is currently studying Intermediate Italian, will garner first-hand experience in Italy through course work, visits to important Italian and European institutions and

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently attended a night of networking with the various chambers of commerce from the Town of Babylon. The widely attended event took place at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. “Tonight was a very unique opportunity, as it is not every day that I get

to meet with all of the local chambers in one room,” said McCaffrey. “Although each chamber has its own set of ideas and challenges, there is a tremendous amount that they have in common. To improve a community as large and diverse as the Town of Babylon, we need to bring together groups like these as often as possible.”

In addition to enjoying an informative night of networking, those attending the event also participated in a tour of Southside Hospital’s state-of-the-art facility. Participants learned about the hospital’s history, its many great strides in recent years, along with its plans to expand and improve.

Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the ﬂy, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Students at Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District embarked on virtual field trips to the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA). As part of a distancelearning program, students engaged in a variety of art lessons

taught by CMA instructors through video conference calls. Kindergartners, first- and second-graders learned about basic color usage in art samples, while third-, fourth- and fifthgraders learned about impressionism, Native Americans, and knights and castles, respectively.

A 45-year resident of North Babylon with her late husband John, Lee Tatti was an active member of the following PTA units: Phelps Lane, Robert Moses, North Babylon High School, SEPTA, and PTA Council. In addition to her work with the North Babylon PTA, Lee was an active member of the North Babylon’s Booster Club, the Performing Arts Support Association (PASA), the North Babylon Touchdown Club, a Columbiette in the Knights of Columbus,

recognized Lee as having the longest tenure in North Babylon history as an active PTA member. The PTA Council has established an annual award called the “Lee Tatti Volunteer of the Year Award” given to a member in our community that emulates Lee and her dedication to the community. PASA has created the “Lee Tatti PASA Memorial Scholarship”, to be given each year to a student who gives to the community. On June 7, 2005 the Board of Education, Central Administration, and the North Babylon High School Administration presented the Tatti Family with a special dedication ceremony naming the North Babylon High School Auditorium, “The Lee Tatti Auditorium.”
