Babylon Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award
The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award during the annual Silver Award Ceremony and Breakfast, which included a keynote address by the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Labor Licensing and Consumer
Affairs, Rosalie Drago. The Silver Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by each recipient as they join an elite group of young women who earn the highest Girl Scout honor a Cadette Scout can achieve. Members of the Babylon Service Unit 616;
Lillian Montecalvo,
Vivian
Mace, Alyssa Cuevas, Madeline Murphy, Sophia Paduano, Gianna Bruni, Isabella Ferraiuolo and Isabella Rutha were among those acknowledged for this great accomplishment.
“The Silver Award is the highest distinction that Girl Scouts in this age range can earn,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino.
“It takes a great deal of responsibility, dedication, and confidence for these Girls to complete these important projects as they create a notable positive impact in their community. I applaud these girls’ commitment to making a difference and joining a highly distinguished group of accomplished young women.”
To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them and would greatly benefit the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette Journey before beginning their Silver Award project. To meet the Girl Scout
Silver Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.
Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Through the process, Silver
Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problem-solving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others.
Troop 1037 members Lillian Montecalvo, Vivian Mace, Alyssa Cuevas and Madeline Murphy placed peace poles at St. Paul’s Church in North Babylon. Peace poles are placed to honor humanity and to share the reminder that goodness comes from acts of kindness.
Troop 1037 members Sophia Paduano and Gianna Bruni erected peace poles in front of the Town of Babylon Community Center.
Isabella Ferraiuolo and Isabella Rutha created a buddy bench where anyone can take a seat together and feel comfortable to be themselves.

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together
Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.
The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”
Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.
Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts
to those who need a helping hand.”
The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.
Here are ways you can get involved:
•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.
•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.
•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.
•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.
When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

Town Of Babylon Celebrates Legendary Coach’s 500th Win
The Town of Babylon honored legendary Long Island boys basketball coach Jack Agostino with a proclamation for his 500th career win. Agostino achieved this momentous victory as the head coach of Amityville Memorial High School, where he has coached for 28 years.
“I have known Jack a very long time and was so glad to see him return to coach Amityville,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “Obviously the work he does on the court is incredible,
but the impact he has on the lives of the young men in the basketball program is remarkable. Everyone in the community continually speaks highly of him.”
A New York State Basketball Hall of Famer, Agostino’s first head coaching position was at Amityville in 1987. He coached at the high school until 2014, when he stepped away from high school basketball. He returned, however, in 2021 to coach Bay Shore High School for two seasons. After an April 2022 Amityville
basketball alumni event meant to honor Agostino and his former players, he was asked by the school board if he would like to return as the Amityville head coach. He proceeded to lead the team to a successful 2023 season, including playoffs and his 500th career win.
“He is the fourth basketball coach in Long Island history to accomplish 500 wins,” said Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. “He teachers his players how to build relationships, have confidence and
achieve success in life. He is a leader and mentor who makes a positive impact on everyone he comes into contact with.”
“The community of Amityville and Town of Babylon have blessed my heart,” said Jack Agostino. “To be here with all of you today celebrating makes it even more special.”
In addition to his impressive number of victories, Agostino has won nine Long Island titles, four state public high school championships and two state Federation titles.
TOWN OF BABYLON CELEBRATES LEGENDARY COACH’S 500TH WIN - Town of Babylon Councilman DuWayne Gregory, Town of Babylon Receiver of Taxes Jennifer Montiglio, Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney, Town of Babylon Clerk Gerry Compitello, Amityville Union Free School District Director of Athletics
