Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

Conversations with Masters 3 In this latest Conversations with Masters, I want to pay tribute to all of the rebels; the people who do it their way and walk in their unapologetic truth. Below are some favorite quotes from past celebrity interviews that demonstrate this very quality. Legendary Puerto Rican actress and singer, Rita Moreno, on her decision to not work until Hollywood stopped stereotyping her: “I think it was a very good decision on my part, because the only thing that was being offered, really, were gang movies, and they certainly weren’t as interesting as West Side Story. I think it would have depressed the heck out of me to go back to that stuff. It paid off in the sense that I had peace of mind and I didn’t feel like I was being insulted.” Singer Michael Buble on why he will never use the word “fan”: “I’ll never use the word “fan.” I think it’s a sh***y word. It’s short for “fanatical,” and I think that’s negative. I don’t think these
are fanatics. I think these are beautiful human beings who need as much love, and who give as much love, as anybody else.”
I eliminated those people. Anyone who thought that I couldn’t do it or gave me any kind of negativity, I didn’t allow it to permeate.”
Spice Girl Mel B. on her everevolving Scary Spice persona: “I’m still the same. A little more educated and more aware, and I would say more honest which could be misinterpreted as being even more brash and even more loud (laughs).”
Actress Vivica A. Fox on focus and hard work: “For the last two to three years I slept on planes. I was always traveling, always busy, taking meetings, not sleeping, going here, going there; and going through changes of life and never letting it slow me down. There’s a lot of work required. That’s what I tell people. Being the Head Chick in Charge means, don’t let anyone outwork you.”
Filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner on the importance of a free and truthful press: “[News for profit] is always going to be an issue, but I would suggest that it’s about striving for the truth. You don’t always necessarily get there, but you’ve got to strive for it.” WWE Wrestler Chris Jericho on ignoring naysayers: “Everyone laughed when I originally said I wanted to be a wrestler; literally laughed. One time at church the pastor said, ‘Chris is going to Calgary to be a wrestler,’ and he started laughing.
Pop legend Paula Abdul on embracing her calling to dance: “I knew what my calling was. I find that with dance, for many young kids, it’s just like that. I hear from so many parents saying that their daughter, that’s all she does. Dance can strike a chord in your heart unlike anything else. It gets into your soul and it changes people’s lives. It’s been [therapeutic] for me, and for most people who dance.”
Helping You Help Others By: Noelle Lambert
Noelle@SouthBaysNeighbor.com
April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like
to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President. This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. If you would like to volunteer at a Bay or Beach Clean-Up Event, please email operationsplash@optonline. net or call (516) 378-4770 to see when their next clean-up will be. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are also needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. It has been a pleasure featuring Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and all they do. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!
Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Coastal Steward Long Island www.CoastalSteward.org
Coastal Steward Long Island works to preserve and protect Long Island’s precious marine environment through education, preservation and restoration. On this Saturday, April 27th, they will be partnering with the Long Island Beach Buggy Association and holding a beach cleanup at Smith Point County Park in Shirley from 9AM3PM. The LIBBA will be putting on a BBQ for those who attend! If you want to attend, please email info@coastalsteward.org to register. Additionally, Coastal Steward is the chosen organization that will be benefiting from Roux Associates 8th Annual Fundraiser! Held on Friday, May 10th from 7PM-10PM at Croxley Ale House in Farmingdale, this event will consist of appetizers, a buffet, an open bar, raffles and more! All who attend must purchase a ticket for the event. Please visit their website for additional information.
If you would like your organization to be featured in this column, e-mail Noelle@SouthBaysNeighbor.com!

Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s
The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be
associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12
years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related
to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called
beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are
urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.
BABYLON - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY APRIL 24, 2019 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age.

*These rates are effective through April 30, 2019. $100,000 minimum deposit to earn the advertised 2.35% Annual Percentage Yield (APY). $50,000 minimum deposit to earn the advertised 2.11% APY. **Treasury Bill Indexed Money Market rate is based on an index calculated by taking the rate of the closing “asked” discount basis of the 30-day Treasury Bill as quoted and published in The Wall Street Journal on the last business day of the prior month as set forth below. If there are no exact Treasury Bills with a 30-day maturity, then the “asked” rate used shall be for Treasury Bills with a maturity date closest to, but not to exceed 30 days. These new APYs will then take effect on the first calendar day of each subsequent month and will remain in effect through each subsequent month-end. Balances of $25,000 to $49,999 earn an APY of 1.52%, which is 65% of the indexed rate, balances of $50,000 to $99,999 earn an APY of 2.11%, which is 90% of the indexed rate, and balances of $100,000 or more earn an APY of 2.35%, which is 100% of the indexed rate. There is no interest paid on deposits under $25,000. $10,000 minimum deposit is required to open this account. A monthly service fee of $10.00 will be charged each month at the end of the statement cycle if the account balance falls below $10,000 on any day of the month. Fees may reduce earnings and principal if the account balance falls below $10,000 on any day during the statement cycle. Please see disclosure for other terms and conditions. Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over
might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic
conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.
• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA
notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of
injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.
BABYLON - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY APRIL 24, 2019 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, finding time to work out is not so easy.

In recognition of World Down Syndrome Day which takes place annually on March 21, staff and students from the Babylon School District recently came together to host a “Rock Your Socks” event which celebrated the unique qualities that everyone brings to school on a daily basis. This year, the Babylon School District partnered with Café Europa, who created sock-shaped pizzas for the special day. Coping with an Empty Nest
Mothers spend 18 years or more devoted to their children, and often their identities are defined as “Mom” above all else. As a result, it can be difficult to think ahead to life without kids in the home. Many parents feel a sense of sadness and loss when their last child leaves the family home. Referred to as “empty nest syndrome,” these feelings are not officially labeled as a clinical mental health issue, but they are very real for many people. While parents encourage their children to become independent and branch out in their own lives, not every parent can cope with an empty nest. The parenting and family
resource Verywell Family states that mothers with empty nest syndrome experience a deep void in their lives that oftentimes makes them feel a little lost. Moms who are feeling the pangs of sadness due to an empty nest can employ some strategies to alleviate these feelings. Keep friends close. Use this opportunity to spend more time with close friends and put yourself first. Schedule all of those activities you may have temporarily put on hold while caring for children through the years. Make time for travel. New experiences can broaden anyone’s horizons. Travel

free time. Or maybe you’ve always had a goal of going back to school? Now may be the time to make that happen.
Redefine yourself. The experts at Psychology Today suggest finding new roles and interests to explore, or spend more time exploring existing hobbies. For example, if you’ve thought about doing community theater, do so now that you have some
Reconnect with your partner. Recall the years before you had children when it was only the two of you and devote time to making more memories as a couple. Plan date nights, go to sporting events, attend a summer concert, or pursue other shared
interests. Change things up at home. Turn children’s rooms into spaces you can use for your own interests. One can be a crafting room or a home office. Another may be a home theater. No longer labeling those rooms as
Did you know? Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has much more appeal. According to a study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling.
Many are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network, Virtuoso, found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000

per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement.
Age-related discounts, consultation with travel agencies (as opposed to skipping right to travel websites) and traveling as part of a group are just a few of the ways that you can maximize your travel budget in reitrement.

Diversity Through Literature North Babylon’s Parliament Place Elementary School highlighted the arts and the multicultural diversity through literature for the school’s International Children’s Book Day celebration on April 4. For the celebration, teachers had guest readers read
trade books on each grade level that represent many different ethnicities. In Ms. Anna Montuori’s class, Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney visited students and read “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” by Hans Christian Andersen. After that, Ms. Montuori’s
students rehearsed a performance for Councilman McSweeney, which they later performed for other students in the building. The performance consisted of students singing songs and reciting poems that reflected the theme of the day.

The Babylon School District would like to extend sincere congratulations toward Babylon JuniorSenior High School student Agnes Goldin for receiving a $5,000 scholarship through Distributive Education Clubs of America in partnership with Hilton based on a submitted application and excellent performances during DECA competitions. Agnes is one of only three students from New York State to receive a DECA scholarship this year, as
DECA and its corporate partners awards more than $300,000 annually in scholarships to students across the nation. Additionally, she is the first Babylon student to have ever received this prestigious award. She will be accepting her award at the International DECA Career Conference to be held in Orlando, Florida on April 30. Agnes has been a member of DECA for four years, maintaining the role as and president for the past two years. She has
been a voting delegate at the New York State DECA Career Conference for four years and was also on the nominations committee during her sophomore year. In addition, Agnes qualified for the International DECA Career conference for three of her four years at Babylon JSHS. “I could not think of a worthier recipient for this award,” said Babylon Junior-Senior High School DECA adviser Claire Reilly.

Start Breathing Clean (NAPSI)—A new year, whether the one on the calendar or a more personal milestone, is a good time to give your health and well-being a new start, too. Here are three hints on how: 1. Be active—but don’t set too high a goal. Just walking for 30 minutes a day, even in 10-minute increments, can make a difference. 2. Eat right. Go for more
fruits and vegetables; fewer sugary drinks, red meats and high-fat, processed foods. 3. Reduce indoor pollution. Get your HVAC system cleaned by a NADCA professional. In most homes, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and build up in the ductwork. NADCA sets the industry
standard for HVAC system cleaning and its members must have at least one certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff, comply with a Code of Ethics and acquire continuing education credits. For further facts and tips and to find a nearby NADCA member, go to www.nadca.com.

Your Pre-Need Funeral Experts Fully Provisioned for the Handicapped
IS CREMATION THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have swerved that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750.00 and $3000.00, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355.00 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755.00-to $2300.00. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory.

County has undertaken a number of actions to protect this vital industry, including implementing an Aquaculture Lease Program to provide secure access to marine space for private, commercial shellfish aquaculture, which has spurred revitalization in oyster production.
Whole Foods Comm Giving Day
It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.
