West Babylon High School photography student Luke Adams was awarded the prestigious Renzo S. Bianchi Scholarship Award during the opening of the Long Island’s Best Young Artists exhibit at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington. Luke is a senior art student who will attend

the Fashion Institute of Technology in the fall. He is currently enrolled in the art department’s Photo II course. Luke has also taken Advanced Placement studio, drawing and painting courses, as well as ceramics. The West Babylon Art Department wishes Luke continued success in his art career.

60-Member Youth Ensemble Salute Marc Shaiman And Scott Wittman At 31st Annual Gala.

New York, NY - The Camp Broadway® Kids, a musical theatre ensemble compromised of 60 theatreloving kids, ages 12-16, will be featured at The New York Pops 31st Birthday Gala at Carnegie Hall on Monday, April 28,2014. Making their seventh appearance at this annual star-studded event, Camp Broadway Kids will perform with Broadway star Andrea Martin to celebrate the hit-making careers of composer, lyricist, and arranger Marc Shaiman, and director, lyricist, and writer Scott Wittman. The Camp Broadway Kids will perform “Blame Canada,” from the film South Park: Bigger Longer, & Uncut, written by Trey Parker and Marc Shaiman, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song in 1999. Under the baton of New York Pops Music Director Steven Reineke, the benefit concert will also feature Christian Borle, Jane Krakowski, Patti LuPone, Katherine McPhee, Marissa Jaret Winokur and others.

Recreation Field Ribbon Cutting Stony Brook University celebrated the opening of its newly renovated Campus Recreation Field Complex with a ribboncutting ceremony at the southeast corner of the South P parking area of the campus. Stony Brook University students will have primary use of the three competition size turf and grass fields which measure over nine square acres and include lights for evening practice and competition. Stony Brook University now provides double the amount of recreational field space previously available to students prior to refurbishment. Fields A and B are both fitted with lighting and bleacher and bench seating and fields A, B and C have netting to prevent balls from leaving the fields. Speakers at the ceremony included Samuel L. through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade. There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”

that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Their project, The Bioremediation of 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane

(R-134a) By Scendesmus sp. As Facilitated By Titanium Dioxide And Activated Charcoal, has proven to be a novel solution to facilitating the remediation of car coolant using algae in a clean way and has earned them a minimum of $300 thus far. The students are one of only 50 teams to be selected nationwide out of an original pool of several

hundred applicants. The 10 teams chosen to move on to the finalist level will be announced at the end of April. If chosen, Jed and Max will be given a stipend of up to $15,000 to create a new prototype of their solution and will meet with industry representatives to discuss official production of their solution to pollution.

Celebrating Differences Throughout the PARP and Read-A-Thon programs, Babylon Memorial Grade School students teamed up to read hundreds of minutes and worked to develop lifelong reading habits. The programs, which were coordinated by the school’s PTA and under the leadership of Mike Tricker, ran for four weeks and followed the theme “The Olympics – Faster, Higher, Stronger.” At the start of the program, the school discussed the meaning of the Sochi quilt – namely how it was a symbol of the different regions, cultures and traditions of the hosting country. Throughout PARP, students

completed reading based on various themes related to the Olympics and answered several questions regarding their passages. These responses were displayed on a school version of the Sochi quilt. Embracing this notion of diversity and capturing the importance of reading, Lisa Lang’s third-grade class created their own PARP quilt with the help of class mom Danielle Paisley, which depicted the students various reading interests and photos of them reading. At the end of the program, the hours each student read during PARP as well as the Read-a-Thon were tallied and grade-level winners were announced.

Ms. Lang’s class swept the third grade, earning gold medal honors for their participation in both the Read-A-Thon and PARP as well as for meeting the reading goal set by the grade level. Additional commendation went to Danielle Vedder’s sixthgrade class for their 99 percent participation in the Read-a-Thon and for surpassing their grade level’s reading goal. Based on the schoolwide results, the sixth grade was named the gold medal winner for the Reada-Thon, fifth grade for PARP participation, third grade for their combined participation as well as for meeting the grade level’s reading goal.

Top Musicians Perform On Saturday, March 8th, seven student musicians from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School participated in the SCMEA Division III All-County Festival held at Southampton High School. This concert, which features a chorus, orchestra and band, is comprised of some of the finest young musicians in Suffolk County. Students were selected based on their high scores at the NYSSMA solo adjudication festival last May. In these ensembles, students participate in three fast paced, intense rehearsals with prominent conductors in the choral and instrumental fields. Camp programs combine camping, sports and fun with diabetes education and support to give children with diabetes and their families the tools they need to live happy, healthy, balanced lives.
