Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. Telehealth Is Available Through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy Telehealth is a new resource available through Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy for anyone that needs therapy and wishes to receive the treatment in the comfort and safety of their own home. Telehealth offers a web based therapy session that is done via a webcam. Phones, tablets, or computers can be used. The sessions are private and the only people that have access to the video call are the patient and the treating therapist.
Telehealth is available for any body part or condition, and is covered by insurance. While we navigate the challenges COVID-19 presents, under most insurances Metro Physical Therapy is able to waive any copayment associated with the treatment. This means sessions are available at no out of pocket cost to the patient in most cases. In the event a copayment can not be waived, a second session in the same week is being
offered for free. This allows a patient to be treated 2x per week for the cost of 1 session. Equipment is available to be dropped off upon therapists discretion, allowing patients to complete meaningful exercises to help progress them further. Student Scientists Succeed Babylon Memorial Grade School recently hosted its annual science fair, which featured projects by students in grades three to six on a wide range of scientific research topics of their choice. Finalists from all four grades participated in individual interviews about their projects conducted by district science chair Melissa Callahan and high school science teacher Claire Donaldson. As a result, third grader Fin Nava, fourth grader Elizabeth
Doherty, fifth grader Adam Miller and sixth grader Nathaniel Schubart were each awarded first place in their respective grade levels for their outstanding work. These budding scientists will advance to Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Elementary Science Fair Competition on May 9. Besides curiosity, the students also had a variety of personal motivations for their research. Schubart, who won for his project “Does Recycling Education
Improve Recycling Outcomes in Quality or Quantity?,” explained, “Not many people know what can and can’t be recycled so I decided to do a project that would benefit my family, my village and maybe even my state.” The district congratulates the winners on their accomplishments and commends all who participated on their dedication to scientific inquiry.

DECA Students Flourish At The State Level Forty students from Babylon Junior-Senior High School traveled in early March to Rochester to compete in New York DECA’s 60th annual State Career Conference. Facing more than 3,200 DECA students during this fourday event, the Babylon students had an impressive showing once again. DECA is Babylon’s largest cocurricular club, which means that the topic areas in which students compete
are also taught in the business classroom. At the conference, Babylon was one of 10 New York schools to receive the community service award for its fundraising efforts for The National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Eight students were inducted into the New York State DECA Honor Society for active business students with excellent DECA achievement: Erin Corcoran, Jill Camilleri,
Kate Hannon, Meghan Nachemin, Maddy Graham, Allie Van Rossem, Darby Dreher and Megan Burke. In addition, Megan Burke, Erin Corcoran, Allie Van Rossem and Kate Hannon earned four top 10 awards, Noah Kowalewsky earned two top 10 awards, and Lily Hagen, Meghan Nachemin, Bridget Hannon and Darby Dreher earned one top 10 award each.

Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith. Although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation should take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains”, as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body. An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be a proper final disposition for those remains. Please keep this teaching of the Church in mind if you are considering cremation for yourself or for loved ones, and please feel free to contact one of the priests if you have further questions about it.

Gorging themselves on leaves, gypsy moth caterpillars weaken and can kill more than 300 different species of trees. Since 1970,
they’ve defoliated more than 75 million acres. The Answer That’s why the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires homeowners by law to inspect and remove gypsy moth egg masses from household goods prior to moving across state lines—and get an official certificate of inspection.
What You Need To Do • Check all outdoor household goods— lawn furniture, grills, outdoor toys, camping equipment—for egg masses. • Use a putty knife, stiff brush or similar hand tool to dispose of any egg masses you do find into a container of hot, soapy water, or place them in a
plastic bag, seal it, and set it in the sun. To get the certificate, you can perform a selfinspection or hire a state-certified pesticide applicator. The American Moving and Storage Association says you should then give the inspection certificate to your moving van driver.
