West Babylon Senior High School studentartists have received a number of local and regional awards and invitations to display their artwork. The portrait photography of Cooper Coyle and Luke Coyle was displayed during March at the West Babylon Public Library. Natalie Nunez’s photograph, “Blue Fire,” on display at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington through April 19th, was awarded the Renzo S. Bianchi

Scholarship Award during the Long Island’s Best: Young Artists reception. Her work was also selected for display at Marshs Department Store in Huntington Village during May for its illustration of the close ties between art and fashion. Anna Fleury and Kelly Obrycki were selected to attend Adelphi University’s “For the Love of Art” Art Foundations Program, where they will take a life drawing course. This past fall, Alexandra Capobianco

and Jessica Capobianco were selected to attend the same workshop. In addition, Antonino Quintalino was awarded a first-place $5,000 annual scholarship to Dowling College. To apply for the scholarship, Antonio created a digital reimagination of a master artwork. Antonino has accepted the scholarship offer and looks forward to continuing his education at Dowling.

As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin. cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

Fourth and fifth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park prepared a moving presentation of the Stations of the Cross during Holy Week. Parents, students and faculty assembled for a prayerful session as Principal Sister Susan Snyder set the tone with a moment of silence and an opening prayer. Each set of students took the stage in the Father Behan auditorium, enacting each of the 14 Stations of the Cross behind a backlit screen, silhouetting each scene

in touching black and white vibrance. While the silhouette took shape, another student narrated each station, along with an example of what the station reminds us, in our everyday lives. The Stations of the Cross, also known as the Via Dolorosa, is a narration of the final hours of the life of Jesus Christ on earth. They serve as a stark reminder of the humble manner in which Jesus was willing to set aside any privilege of deity in order to provide a path to salvation through His sacrifice.

The Babylon Village Arts Council is proud is announce an art partnership program with the Babylon High School Art Department to foster the love of art in the next generation. Two Babylon High School students, Amanda Crowley and Sarah Valencia will create works of arts with supplies provided by the Babylon Village Arts Council in the amount of $200 per student. Under the guidance of Cheryl Schweider, art teacher at Babylon High School, students will learn time management skills ,budget constraints, and design options. To experience a real life art exhibit each participant will exhibit their work at the 8th Annual Outdoor Art show, entitled “Art by the Falls,” on May 16th in Argyle Park which will provide interaction with the public. Their work will be displayed at Astoria Bank in June as part of the Rotational Art Program. This program is funded through membership and donations. By that I mean, we help ourselves by helping others. We feel better when we make others feel better. We can’t change the past nor can we change the present, but we can strive to change the future.
