The Town Of Babylon Hosts The Wall That Heals Exhibit Helps Spread The Healing Legacy Of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Town of Babylon will proudly host the traveling exhibit The Wall That Heals from October 5 to 8, 2023 at Tanner Park. A 375-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., the traveling exhibit pays tribute to over three million Americans who served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. Similar to the exhibit, a smaller replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall drew thousands to Town Hall back in 1995.

“When we talked about doing this again, it was a nobrainer,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to support our veterans in this meaningful manner and provide access to a powerful monument to all in our community. We would like to especially thank Charles Spencer for his instrumental role in bringing this exhibit to the Town.”

The Wall That Heals spreads the healing legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.. This exhibit aids thousands of veterans in their healing process, empowering them to encounter The Wall in the familiarity of their own communities and emboldening their strength and courage. It also serves as an important source of peace for family and friends of veterans and

learning tool for others in the community.

Town Of Babylon Honors Local Student For Service To Veterans

CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION AND OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD - The Town of Babylon recently honored 10-year-old West Babylon resident Tyler Sullo for his exceptional service to veterans in the community. The Town of Babylon recently honored 10-year-old West Babylon resident Tyler Sullo for his exceptional service to veterans in the community. Tyler, the student body president of Forest Avenue Elementary School, declared helping local veterans to be a part of his electoral platform. Inspired

by his veteran grandparents and those in his community, he fulfilled this goal through his organization of a heartwarming dinner to benefit veterans.

“In West Babylon, we are lucky to have great people like Tyler who make up our community to help all of our organizations run,” said

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “That is what living in the Town of Babylon is all about.”

Tyler organized a free February 13 dinner for veterans that not only provided a delicious meal of spaghetti and meatballs but a sense of togetherness and gratitude near Valentine’s

Day and $1,000 raised for American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon as well. Tyler and his family coordinated with over two dozen local businesses to secure items for 29 raffled-off gift baskets, and funds were also raised through a 50/50 raffle.

American Legion Post 1634 was incredibly grateful for the funds, which will help

maintain the building and its services to veterans, including crucial veterans support groups.

In a ceremony, the Town of Babylon Board presented Tyler with a certificate of appreciation, and American Legion Post 1634 bestowed him with an outstanding service award. “It goes without saying that this is

a tremendous thing to do, particularly for someone of his age,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “As a veteran, I am grateful to Tyler for recognizing the need to help our veterans and the incredible impact he can have.”

Town Of Babylon Women’s History Month Program

The Town of Babylon recently held their 34th Annual Women’s History Month Program -- “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories”. One of this year’s honorees was longtime Village of Lindenhurst resident Diane Reynolds. Former owner of Diane’s Dance Studio, Diane’s work has had a significant impact, on her students and the community at large. Diane taught life lessons, in addition to dance fundamentals, such as discipline, time

management, self-confidence, and teamwork. Her former students feel grateful for the lessons she taught and they have carried those lessons forward as teachers and mentors to others.

The other honorees at the event included Patricia Cahaney. Girls Inc. of Long Island, Verdel Jones, Lori-Ann Novello & Lindy Cares, Inc., Ledy

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING, BUDGET VOTE AND ELECTION BABYLON UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF THE TOWN OF BABYLON, SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that a public hearing of the qualified voters of the Babylon Union Free School District of the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, New York will be held in the library of the Babylon Junior-Senior High School, 50 Railroad Avenue, Babylon, New York, in said District on Monday, May 8, 2023 at 7:30 p.m., prevailing time, for the transaction of business as authorized by the Education Law, including the following items:

1. To present to the voters a detailed statement (proposed budget) of the amount of money which will be required for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that pursuant to Chapter 258 of the Laws of 2008, Section 495 was added to the Real Property Tax Law, and requires the School District to attach to its proposed budget an exemption report.  Said exemption report, which will also become part of the final budget, will show how much of  the total assessed value on the final assessment roll used in the budgetary process is exempt from taxation, list every type of exemption granted, identified by statutory authority, and show:

(a) the cumulative impact of each type of exemption expressed either as a dollar amount of assessed value or as a percentage of the total assessed value on the roll;

(b) the cumulative amount expected to be received from recipients of each type of exemption as payments in lieu of taxes or other payments for municipal services; and

(c) the cumulative impact of all exemptions granted.  The exemption report shall be posted on any bulletin board maintained by the District for public notices and on any website maintained by the District.

AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that petitions nominating candidates for the office of member of the Board of Education shall be filed with the Clerk of said School District at her office, located at 50 Railroad Avenue, Babylon, New York, not later than April 17, 2023 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., prevailing time. Vacancies on the Board of Education are not considered separate, specific offices; candidates run at large.

Nominating petitions shall not describe any specific vacancy upon the Board for which the candidate is nominated; must be directed to the Clerk of the District; must be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the District (representing the greater of 25 qualified voters or 2% of the number of voters who voted in the previous annual election); must state the name and residence of

each signer, and, must state the name and residence of the candidate.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that applications for absentee ballots will be obtainable during school business hours from the District Clerk beginning April 3, 2023; completed applications may not be received by the District Clerk earlier than April 17, 2023, and must be received by the District Clerk at least seven (7) days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter, or to the agent named in the absentee ballot application. Absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk not later than 5:00 p.m., prevailing time, on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.

A list of persons to whom absentee ballots are issued will be available to qualified voters of the District for inspection in the Office of the District Clerk on and after Thursday, May 11, 2023 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on weekdays prior to the day set for the annual election and on May 16, 2023, the day set for the election. IS HEREBY GIVEN, that personal registration of voters is required either pursuant to §2014 of the Education Law or pursuant to Article 5 of the Election Law. If a voter has heretofore registered pursuant to §2014 of the Education Law and has voted at an annual or special district meeting within the last four (4) calendar years, he or she is eligible to vote at this election; if a voter is registered and eligible to vote under Article 5 of the Election Law, he or she is also eligible to vote at this election. Registration will be conducted up to and including May 11, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on days when school is in session at the Office of the District Clerk, located at 50 Railroad Avenue, Babylon, New York. The register so prepared pursuant to §2014 of the Education Law will be filed

must be returned by mail or in person to the office of the District Clerk at 50 Railroad Avenue, Babylon, New York. Military ballots shall be canvassed if they are received by the District Clerk before the close of polls on May 16, 2023 showing a cancellation mark of the United States Postal Service or a foreign country’s postal service, or showing a dated endorsement of receipt by another agency of the United States Government; or received not later than 5:00 p.m. on May 16, 2023 and signed and dated by the military voter and one witness thereto, with a date which is ascertained to be not later than the day before the election.

Y POR LA PRESENTE ADEMÁS SE AVISA, que en virtud del capítulo 258 de las leyes del 2008, la sección 495 fue agregada a la Ley de Impuesto a la propiedad y exige que el Distrito Escolar adjunte un informe de la exención en su propuesta de presupuesto. Dicho informe de exención, el cual será también parte del presupuesto final, mostrará cuánto del total del valor tasado en la lista final de tasaciones usado en el proceso presupuestario está exento de impuestos, enumerará todo tipo de exención concedida, identificada por autoridad legal y mostrará: (a) el impacto acumulativo de cada tipo de exención expresada ya sea como una cantidad en dólares del valor de tasación o como un porcentaje del total del valor tasado en la lista;

(b) el importe acumulativo que se espera recibir de los destinatarios de cada tipo de exención como pagos en lugar de impuestos u otros pagos por servicios municipales; y (c) el impacto acumulativo de todas las

exenciones concedidas.  Se publicará el informe de la exención en carteleras de anuncios mantenidas por el distrito para avisos públicos y en todo sitio web mantenido por el Distrito.

Y POR LA PRESENTE ADEMÁS SE AVISA, que las peticiones para nominar a candidatos para el cargo de miembro de la Junta de Educación se deberán presentar a la secretaria de dicho Distrito Escolar en su oficina, ubicada en 50 Railroad Avenue, Babylon, New York a más tardar el 17 de abril de 2023 entre las 9 de la mañana y las 5:00 de la tarde, hora vigente. Una lista de las personas a quienes se emiten boletas de voto en ausencia estará disponible para que los votantes cualificados del Distrito la inspeccionen en la oficina de la secretaria del Distrito a partir del jueves 11 de mayo de 2023 entre las 9:00 de la mañana y las 4:00 de la tarde, los días de

How Do I Love Thee? Three Couples Count The Ways Breast Cancer Zoom Forum On April 24

In an honest panel discussion, three couples— Cindy and Bruce, Kim and Anthony and Tim and Sandy--will share how they successfully coped when faced with a breast cancer diagnosis. The free forum, sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, will be held on zoom on Monday, April 24, from 4 pm to 5:15 pm.

Even partners who are strongly committed to one another may face difficult moments when confronted with the extraordinary stress of breast cancer. The following three couples will talk about their journeys together through breast cancer and how they have continued to have lives filled with activity and joy.

Cindy and Bruce met on a blind date 41 years ago. They married, and in

1994, Cindy was treated for breast cancer. Sixteen year later, the couple learned that Cindy’s cancer had come back. Cindy had a mastectomy of the same breast, followed by chemotherapy, Cindy recalls the difficulty of trying to juggle it all when first diagnosed.

She reached out to the Young Women’s Support Group at Adelphi connecting with others in her situation and gaining the support she needed to move forward. Today, Cindy is a volunteer at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

Kim and Anthony have been together for 10 years, meeting while Kim was working in a restaurant as a bartender. Anthony is a day trader who attended Columbia University where

he was a pitcher for their baseball team. Together they have a daughter named Savannah who is 7 years old. Kim was just 30 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since 2019, Kim has been a volunteer with the Adelphi Breast Cancer

Program helping others going through a similar diagnosis.

Tim and Sandy met at a mutual friend’s home when Tim was a freshman in college and Sandy a senior in high school. They had been married for 52 years when they learned Tim

had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in June 2020. Tim says that not even in their wildest dreams could they have imagined the rollercoaster ride they would embark on. Tim is committed to sharing his story as a volunteer with the Adelphi

Breast Cancer Program and helping other men learn the signs of breast cancer and the importance of performing regular breast self-exams.

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”

RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.

Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then

get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.
