Forty-five Babylon Junior-Senior High School students enrolled in the Distributive Education Clubs of America recently competed among 2,300 high school students from across New York State at the 59th annual New York DECA State Career Conference on the weekend of March 5. During their time spent at the conference, the students were able to amass a vast number of awards and accolades based on their efforts. Babylon’s chapter received the Community Service award for contributions to the New York DECA charity of the national Alzheimer’s Association. Additionally, eight Babylon students were inducted into the New York State DECA Honor Society for academic and DECA achievement. The district congratulates Kyra DeVoe, Abigail Erickson, George Glenday, Catie Hernandez, Lauren Jurs, Julia Kelleher, Madeline Stein and Kate Watral. Love? Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work. You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?” The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms. In fact, there are times where

we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.

How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love. Enjoy the richness and depth of well worn love.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

tanks brimming with local marine life. This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Artichoke Pie By Deanna N. of Islip

Deanna of Islip says her family's Artichoke Pie is typically served as a side (vegetable) dish, but is delicious heated up the next day for lunch, too! "My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory." What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely

chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies). Recipe makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy! Spring: A time of renewal and rebirth. The time of year when we know things will get better. Sadly, spring is also a time when millions of unwanted puppies and kittens are born. According to AnimalsAbused.org, there are approximately 70,000 puppies and kittens born in the United States each day. One pair of cats can produce 420,000 offspring in seven years! (that would be from the kittens they have, the kittens their offspring produce, etc.). One pair of dogs can produce 60,000 offspring in six years. This results in a lot of unwanted puppies and kittens who will likely end up in a shelter. The ASPCA estimates that 6.5 million unwanted pets enter shelters each year. Of this number, approximately 860,000 cats and 670,000 dogs

are euthanized. Most of these animals are young and healthy. They are just unwanted. The simple solution to the problem of pet

to be spayed/neutered at an older age (consult your veterinarian). Cats and dogs as young as 3 months old can have litters, so it is important to get your pet

overpopulation: when you bring a pet into your home, get that pet spayed or neutered. According to Dr. Bob Corona of All Pets Animal Hospital in West Babylon, a spay or neuter should be performed on a cat or dog between the ages of 3 and 6 months. Some larger breed dogs may have

fixed early in life. Spaying or neutering your pet not only prevents litters, but it can also help avoid unwanted behavioral issues such as spraying or urine marking in the house, biting, running away and aggression. Spaying or neutering may also help prevent cancer or

other health issues. Kittens and puppies are adorable. It is devastating when those adorable little ones must be surrendered to a shelter in the hope that they will be adopted knowing that there is a low chance of finding a home. There are many veterinarians and organizations that offer low-cost spay/neuter programs. All Pets Animal Hospital in West Babylon offers low cost spay/ neuter, as does Helping PAW in Commack. You can also contact your local animal shelter or the local Humane Society or ASPCA to find a list of organizations that offer spay/neuter at a reduced cost. Finally, if you want to bring a pet into your home, first stop should be your local animal shelter or rescue rather than spending thousands of

Community Editorial: The Importance of Spaying & Neutering Your Pet

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman and Beautification Program Chairwoman Jackie Gordon and the rest of the Town Board recently welcomed six-year-old Payton Lewis to Town Hall and congratulated him for his new position as a Junior Ambassador.

Payton caught the attention of the Beautification Program, led by Director Viscel Moore, when they learned about his service “Payton’s Planet.” Payton learned about the importance of recycling at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in Copiague on Earth Day and decided he wanted to help. Now, he

Babylon Beautification visits homes and businesses to pick up their bottles and cans before bringing them to a recycling center. As a Junior Ambassador, Payton will take part in local cleanup efforts and continue to be a positive influence on his friends and classmates while teaching them the importance of keeping the planet clean.

Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith. Although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation should take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains”, as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body. An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be a proper final disposition for those remains. Please keep this teaching of the Church in mind if you are considering cremation for yourself or for loved ones, and please feel free to contact one of the priests if you have further questions about it.
