abylon Junior-Senior High School students performed the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel before packed audiences this March. The students rehearsed the Broadway hit since early January under the direction of BHS alumnus Derek Kinnear. Attendees were entertained as the cast portrayed the comedic story of a traveling carnival man and his unexpected love, a local factory worker in town.

The Babylon Village Arts Council has been hopping over snow flakes to present several exciting programs for this upcoming month. April’s featured Rotational Artist is Samantha Hernandez, illustrator, graphic designer and author. See her work though April at Astoria Bank, located at 180 West Main Street. On April 9th, BVAC will presents its 2nd Thursday Concert Series at the American Legion Hall featuring the Sunnyland Jazz Band. Generally known for their upbeat songs and sense of humor, the band plays music from the 20s to 30s. This free concert begins at 8 p.m. Please bring a nonperishable pantry item to be donated to the local food pantry. On April 21st, BVAC will screen Spike Lee’s 1997 film Four Little Girls, a documentary of the notorious racial terrorists bombing of an African American church during the Civil Rights Movement.The movie begins at an earlier time at 6:30 p.m., and will be shown at the Babylon Public Library. BVAC is a 501(3)c organization that brings various cultural arts programs to the Babylon

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board and the Department of Human Services to host the Town’s annual Women’s History Month Celebration. The event was held at Walter G. O’Connell High School in Copiague and highlighted this year’s theme of “weaving the stories of women’s lives.” Judge Debra UrbanoDiSalvo, Amityville Village Justice, served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the celebration and Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, who was elected to her first term this past fall, delivered the event’s keynote address.
The ceremony also featured live performances, local vendors and community honorees. Spin On The Carousel Babylon Junior-Senior High School students performed the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Carousel” before packed audiences this March. The students rehearsed the Broadway hit since early January under the direction of BHS alumnus

Vincent Schifano, better known to the students of Deer Park‘s Saints Cyril and Methodius School as “Father Vinny,” took some valuable time out of his daily schedule to give SSCM first graders a “behind-the-scenes” look at the church, including an excellent overview of the items priests use when they say Mass. One of the most beautiful things Father Vinny showed the students was the chalice he received from his parents when he was ordained 15 years
hosted its annual dinner and theater event for community senior citizens. Club members served a tasty dinner for attendees before escorting them to a complimentary showing of the production.

On March 20th and 21st, the North Babylon High School Drama Club’s theatrical production of Mame was presented to school and community members. The musical, which was directed by theatre teacher Lisa Drance, was based

Years later, when his parents passed away, Father Vinny had his mother’s diamond engagement ring and his father’s wedding band welded into the chalice to remember their love and support as he entered the priesthood. He uses this chalice only for special Masses, such as Christmas Day. Father Vinny also showed the youngsters all of the different types of clothing a priest wears to celebrate various services. He showed students the wine and the hosts that are
blessed for the Eucharist and he took them behind the altar into a room where their vestments are kept. The children enjoyed getting a handson overview where they could pass around the various vessels used and have an up-close look at the vestments used during the Mass. Many thanks to Father Vinny for a special tour and for sharing such beautiful insight into all that goes into bringing a Mass to fruition.

Honoring nurses who served in the military, the gathering of oral histories and displays of retrospective memorabilia are all part of Suffolk County Community College’s School of Nursing’s plans for a celebration culminating with the school’s 50th pinning ceremony on May 15th. (ADRC) hosted its 11th Annual Education Conference and Expo 2015 “Caring with a New Perspective” to provide attendees with important information about Alzheimer’s disease from discussion panels, breakout sessions, and a keynote discussion that featured restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, radio host Dan Gasby and moderated by Christine Geed, Communications Director, Office of New York State Senator Phil Boyle.
The annual Education Conference & Expo opened up with an introduction by Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., and a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, Instructor, ADRC. Throughout the day, more than 400 guests received research updates from Dr. Scott Noggle, Director of the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory and the NYSCF-Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s
Disease. Eileen KaneGemmell, MPA, RDN, CDN, Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk, talked about the nutritional challenges faced by those with Alzheimer’s disease or those who are cognitively impaired. Robin Marks, Long Island Regional Director, Amber Court Assisted Living, discussed the benefits of the Medicaidfunded assisted living program. Richard Mollot, Executive Director, Long Term Care Community Coalition, explained the laws and regulations

Alzheimer’s Education that support residentcentered care and how one can care for someone with dementia without drugs. Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for Long-Term Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease - Saving the family Home.” During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first time he
noticed she had the disease, how it affected their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many local families who are coping with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, because of the high incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the African-American population, Mr. Gasby stressed the need for more participation in clinical trials. After the keynote,
guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session featuring motivational speaker Jim Ryan. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Photography Contest Entries are now being accepted for the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Annual Photo Contest. Each year, the contest offers amateur photographers an opportunity to enter photographs in ten categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Computer Manipulated and Student. A maximum of 7 entries per photographer at $5 each will be accepted. Photographs will be judged by a panel of professional judges at the close of the contest,
and winners will be chosen based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center. Winning photographers will be awarded various cash prizes at a reception held in June, and winning photos will be enlarged and permanently displayed at the Gurwin Center for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to the facility. NEW EAGLE SCOUT - Town of Babylon Councilman Tom Donnelly recently honored Jake Altman of West Babylon for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout – the highest honor in scouting. A Court of Honor ceremony was held at the American Legion Hall in Babylon to recognize Jake’s accomplishments. For his Eagle Project, Jake planted beach grass at the Babylon Village pool to help create a barrier to the bay and prevent erosion around the pool. Jake’s project took a total of 165 man-hours, including planning, fundraising and completion.

Adopting A Pet: How To Choose Your Best Match (NAPSI)—Adopting a pet, whether it’s a giant dog or tiny kitten, is a big decision that requires a lifelong commitment—but when you find the right fit, adopting a pet also provides a life full of love. For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would
be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home. Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you have a big backyard? Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt. 2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat. Cats can be more independent and often require less time for daily exercise. 3. Children: Make sure you are aware of the pet’s temperament. A shelter worker may be able to say how a pet gets along with
children. You might even consider creating a special area in your home just for your pet, so he has a safe place to go if children are running around the house. 4. Resources: Ensure that you have the appropriate resources to care for a pet. Creating a budget for things like food and veterinary care is a good place to start. Adoption is a commitment for the pet’s entire life. One easy way to find adoptable pets and shelters is by searching PetSmart Charities’ adoptable pet locator. You can enter criteria such as age, breed and size of the pet you want. Most pets available through adoption are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and licensed, and are often microchipped for a very affordable adoption fee. ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million
free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free
credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

We at Lindenhurst Funeral Home guarantee all the services, merchandise and cash advances will never increase for the family. We do this because it is the right thing to do for the families we serve. By law we set the prepaid funds aside in an interest bearing trust account. The interest on this account accrues and offsets the price increases. If the interest does not meet the price increases, then we accept the lesser amount as total payment for the funeral including cemetery, church, etc. We NEVER ask for any additional funds. However, if the interest exceeds the price increases, we refund the interest to the family. Our accountant keeps telling us this is not a profitable business policy and we keep telling our accountant this policy is fair to the families that entrust us with this awesome responsibility. One misconception of people who prepay for funeral arrangements without guaranteed pricing is that everything is paid for and that the prices will not increase. There are funeral homes that simply accept the money and do not guarantee any price. Thus the interest on the account must pay for funeral home increases and cash advance increases. Some funeral homes do not guarantee cash advances and set the money aside in an interest bearing account and allow the interest to offset the funeral home costs and still charge families for the increases in cash advances. This policy may cause the family to pay hundreds of dollars at the time the funeral actually takes place. For instance, a grave opening in St. Charles Cemetery was $350 in 1984 and is now $1995, Monday thru Friday, $2475 on Saturday. Thus if the funeral home where you prepay your funeral does not guarantee the cemetery costs you will owe $2475 for a Saturday funeral at St. Charles Cemetery.
