Long Island Elite Selects Paws Of War As 2023 Charity Partner

Long Island Elite, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth and development of local Long Island business professionals and emerging regional leaders, has announced they have selected Nesconsetbased Paws of War as its 2023 charity partner. The announcement came at Long Island Elite’s first meeting of the year at The Heritage Club in Farmingdale.

Paws of War is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to train and place service animals and companion dogs to support and provide independence to U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional and physical effects of war. The non-profit also provides animal rescue for U.S. troops who have befriended an animal while serving overseas. The

organization also serves as a community center where veterans and first responders come together daily to build bonds and support each other.

The funds raised by Long Island Elite in 2023 will give Paws of War additional resources to further its mission of “helping both ends of the leash” by providing services to veterans, first responders and their service or companion animals. These activities will support the mental wellbeing of individuals in Paws of War programs, giving back to the heroes who have sacrificed so much for this country. Having service or companion animals has proven to be an effective way to enhance mental wellbeing and reduce veteran suicides. LIE volunteers and funds raised will also assist in rescuing dogs and cats and pairing them with local

heroes in the community.

“This partnership between Long Island Elite and Paws of War will enhance the lives of veterans and lead to numerous dogs find their forever homes. We will also raise awareness in our community about Paws of War’s important mission. Our members will see first-hand the challenges that veterans and first responders face, especially those experiencing the effects of PTSD and the positive impact dogs and cats will provide. As a U.S. Marine veteran, I personally understand the challenges and hardships that our veterans and first responders face every day,” said Frank Morizio, Jr, Long Island Elite President.

During the partnership year, members of Long Island Elite will volunteer their time at Paws of War’s events where they

will learn more about the organization, including the cost of training service animals, the challenges and issues related to abandoned and mistreated animals, animal adoption and rescue and the importance of veterans and first responders gathering to share their stories, comradery and mutual support.

Many veterans and first responders are struggling with PSTD and other mental health challenges. The support and funds that LIE will provide to us will go toward improving the lives of these heroes and at the same time, find homes for so many dogs that need them,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War.

For over 20 years, Long Island Elite members have supported many not-forprofits. The organization has raised over $1 million dollars for charities and charity partners, including

United Cerebral Palsy, ACLD, SIBSPlace, The Safe Center LI, New Ground and Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia Center.

LIE members’ efforts have positively impacted thousands of lives on Long

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

“I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and

smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. Aging men and women may be tempted to eschew home cooking entirely. After all, there are plenty of convenient frozen or take-out foods available that can be whipped up in a snap. However, there are certain benefits to cooking your own meals.

them that they can handle an important daily task without having to rely on their family for meals. As long as it is deemed safe (i.e., no sign of cognitive decline or forgetfulness), seniors should be encouraged to continue cooking.

Babylon Junior-Senior High School has named its valedictorian and salutatorian for the 20222023 school year. Drew Scheriff is the valedictorian for the 2023 graduating class and Caroline Cassidy is its salutatorian. “As is a tradition of each graduating class, we are proud to name our top students for this year,” said Interim Superintendent of Schools Brian Conboy. “We are proud of Drew and Cassidy, along with the rest of their peers. and wish them the best of luck in their future academic and professional endeavors.”

Drew has consistently ranked in the top of his class throughout his academic career. He has received accolades for achieving the highest overall scores in both AP World History and AP Chemistry.. During

his junior year he earned the Rensselaer Medal Award from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. This award is given to students with high academic achievement in the STEM fields. Additionally, Drew has served as president of Babylon’s DECA Club, as well as treasurer of Babylon’s National Honor Society and treasurer of the senior class cabinet. He has also served as a member of Babylon’s Business and Marketing, English, Social Studies, Science and Spanish honor societies as well as the high school’s varsity golf and tennis teams. Drew has undertaken research in the field of nuclear engineering, earning him a Meritorious Ranking from the Long Island Science Congress. He would like to continue pursuing the

subject in college.

Caroline has also routinely been ranked at the top of her class. She has served as president of Babylon’s National Honor Society, French National Honor Society and Thespian Honor Society. She has served as dance captain of the high school theater program and is a member of the Corps de Ballet for the New York Dance Theatre. She is also a black belt in taekwondo and is a martial arts instructor at a local dojo. Additionally, Caroline is a freelance illustrator and has sought to improve herself and the communities she is in through art, and has contributed to various art installations throughout Babylon Village.

Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veteransin-need, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and

has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.

Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” will hold their primary annual fundraiser, a walk-through style Chinese Auction, in Sayville on April 15.
