The morning of Saturday, March 24th started off with Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary. Besides a serving up a great breakfast, the kids took part in crafts and games, as well as photos with their favorite bunny.

Then it was off to the Chamber of Commerce annual Easter Egg Hunt!

Following a list of clues, the kids visited various shops throughout the village, where they collected goodie-filled plastic eggs.

Those eggs were brought

back to the Legion Post, where they were turned in for raffle tickets for the coveted giant Easter basket.

Parents also entered to win a basket put together just for them.

By all accounts, it was a great day kicking off springtime in the village.

It’s so exciting to see the revitalized Argyle Theatre ready for its grand opening!

The first production, Guys and Dolls, runs May 10th through June 17th. There are five more productions already on the schedule.

Our own Babylon Village Arts Council has two upcoming events. The monthly poetry reading at Jack Jack’s Coffee House will feature poet Russ Green on Thursday, April 5th. The event is an open mike format, and begins at 7:30 p.m. The BVAC Classical Music Series will feature “Extra Chi,” a flute and piano duo, on Sunday, April 15th. The concert begins at 2 p.m. at the Babylon Public Library.

The Time of the Season And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season.

Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it?

It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with.

Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case.

As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important.

Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward.

No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective.

They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown.

I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome.

Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season.

Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

The funds enable children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families to enjoy the award-winning Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake in Maine free-ofcharge. At Camp, they join other families on similar journeys and experience the benefits of empathy and encouragement, recovery and recreation, and hope and inspiration.

In all, 23 illness-specific sessions will be hosted at Camp Sunshine in 2018.

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost.

To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Ergonomic gardening techniques can make gardening less taxing Gardening is a popular activity that seems to be gaining even more supporters.

Statistica reports that the number of people who gardened within the last 12 months in the United States rose from around 105 million in 2008 to 118 million in 2017.

Gardening can be relaxing yet physically demanding work. Gardeners who find themselves battling aches and pains after spending time in the garden may need to make a greater effort to reduce injuries and improve comfort when tilling, weeding or installing new landscape features.

Ergonomic gardening techniques and tools can help gardeners reduce their risk of injury and make gardening more comfortable.

Just as novice athletes wouldn’t dive right into a strenuous workout at the gym, nor should novice gardeners immediately pick up a shovel and jump into digging a hole for their new tree. Gardening requires bending, stooping, lifting, twisting and other movements that work the entire body. Spending 10 or more minutes stretching, walking and doing a few back and arm rotations can limber the body up for the physical activity to come.

Use Proper Form

Think about the mechanics of lifting weights during a workout, as home and garden tasks may mimic movements made when exercising. The occupational therapists at Bend Spinal Care say that strain on the lower back can be reduced by positioning objects close to the body and its center of gravity when lifting them.

Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right.

Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as

a single unit. This means creating the layout and finding the center of the middle piece of the grouping.

To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal.

There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space.

Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner.

Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back.

Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve

the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top.

Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall.

Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Wall anchors may be needed if measurements determine a wall stud will not help secure the artwork — to keep the frame sturdy in the drywall. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level.

It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. According to the wood resource Real Cedar, some people think that wood is too expensive and requires too much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be very cost-effective decking options.

According to Remodeling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, wood decks retain considerable resale value.

In terms of maintenance, choosing a rot-resistant wood can result in less maintenance. Durable woods include cedar and redwood. Popular Mechanics says both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to decay, rot and voracious insects. Periodic cleaning and inspection/repairs will be needed, but wood can be much more durable than people may think.

Composite

Composite decking and its close cousin, plastic lumber, are some of the fastestgrowing decking materials on the market. Many products are made from polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. Some

composites will be comprised of recycled plastic and wood fibers to create a weather- and stain-resistant material that doesn’t warp, rot or splinter. Composite manufacturers continually experiment with manufacturing processes to duplicate the look of natural wood grain.

Homeowners are often drawn to composite decking because such decks require little maintenance. These decks do not need to be sanded, stained or refinished. However, mold and mildew can grow in shady, damp areas, so homeowners must realize that these products are not completely maintenance-free.

Aluminum

Although aluminum decks are not seen that often, there are reasons why this decking material is becoming more popular. According to LockDry®, a manufacturer of aluminum decking materials, power-coated aluminum does not need to be replaced due to rotting, cracking or warped boards. Most planks have interlocking edges that create gapfree, watertight decks. Aluminum also has the advantage of being a very strong but lightweight material.

Some people may think that aluminum decks would be hot underfoot, but the material actually stays cooler in the sun because of its heat-dissipation properties.

For those who have green goals in mind, aluminum is totally recyclable.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that unanchored televisions and top-heavy furniture can tip over onto children and cause severe injuries and even death. Everyday furniture can be tempting to climb; therefore, using anchors to secure furniture to walls for security is a must.

Install locking cabinets

Locking cabinets can keep medications, household chemicals, home improvement paints and solvents, and other potential poisons out of reach.

Erect fencing around pools and yards

Install fencing around pools to keep children from wandering close to the water’s edge. Towns and cities may require certain fence heights or selflatching gates to keep little ones safe.

Young children should never be left to their own devices around any source of water, whether it’s a pool, tub or toilet.

Test and replace smoke alarms

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are only useful if they are functional.

The family worries about how people would find out about the funeral and how they would get to the funeral home in time for the funeral. If they should have visiting one day or two days or no visiting at all.

When asked for advice, I recommend the family to do what is best for them. It is the immediate family that must be accommodated by all others.

It is not the obligation of the immediate family who has just suffered the loss of their mother or father or wife or husband that need worry about what everybody else wants. It is everybody else’s job to make sure the immediate family has want they need or want. In other words the immediate family should be accommodated by everyone else and not be worrying about accommodating everyone else’s wishes.

Under most circumstances there isn’t any place in the world that if a person truly desired to come to the funeral he or she could not get to New York in less than 36 hours. If the family wishes they can delay the service for a day or two but is should be the immediate family’s choice and not delayed at the insistence of others. it is difficult enough to cope with the loss of a loved one without worring about the needs of everyone else. It is not selfish of the immediate family to only consider their needs but rather it is selfish of others not to consider the needs of the immediate family. After all when all the rest of the world returns to their normal life the immediate family must begin to pick up the pieces to their shattered lives.

Options for Community Living, Inc. has been awarded two contracts under the New York State Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) through the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. These NYSSHP awards – together totaling $230,640 – will enable Options to assist vulnerable Long Island families and single adults residing in the agency’s supportive housing programs.

“The NYSSHP awards provide much needed

financial support for Options’ case managers who work directly with residents in our housing programs, which continue to grow,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director, Options for Community Living.

“Supportive housing allows people to live with dignity in the community.

It is the most humane and cost-effective solution to ending homelessness and creating stability for vulnerable people on Long Island.”
