Each child brought in a box of cereal to help build a gigantic tower of cereal, which was later donated to the United Methodist Church Food Pantry. America’s Boating Course will be offered this spring at the Long Island Yacht Club, 307 Little East Neck Road in Babylon, beginning weekly on Saturday, April 5th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., by the United States Power Squadron – America’s Boating Club. Pre-registration for the first 40 students will be online at: www.gsbps.org and link to “GSB Public Course Schedule.” In person registration will take place from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on the first day of the course at the Long Island Yacht Club. America’s Boating Course for adults and young boaters (from 10 years old and up) will meet on the following dates: April 5th and April 12th – covering the following topics: You Are The Skipper – What Would You Do?, Boat Terms And Types, Aids To Navigation, Boat Handling, Navigational Rules, Adverse Conditions And Emergencies, U.S. And New York State Regulations, Boat Trailering and Personal Water Craft. Plotting class on April 19th is optional. The benefits of taking this course are as follows: • Provides you the knowledge to be a better and safe boater for you, your boating occupants, and others on the waterways. • Most boat liability insurers provide a 5% discount of boat premiums, which continues from year to year. • Provides the required instruction and certificate for jet ski operation in New York. • Will receive the required certificate to operate a power boat in New York for under 18 year olds. • Certificate is earned, which is required to operate a boat in New Jersey waters and in waters of other states requiring a boating “license.” • Includes six months free membership in the Great South Bay Power Squadron, which offers year round advanced boating courses to members, as well as a complete social calendar. Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Babylon High School’s DECA chapter competed in the 54th Annual DECA State Career Conference in Rochester this winter and was recognized with several awards. The high school was one of only 10 schools from across the state to receive the prestigious Community Service Recognition Award. Five students were awarded New York State DECA Honor Society status and 13 students received individual awards. The chapter earned the community service recognition based on the team’s efforts in raising $500 for Relay for Life, the DECA-appointed charity of the year. Membership into the NYS DECA Honor Society required the students – Jayne Dittmeier, Daniel Lum, Emma Rende, Matthew Steffanata and Matthew Taggart – to attend two or more state competitions and exhibit exemplary performance in business classes. The Dictionary Project is a nationwide initiative to encourage students to increase their reading and writing skills while learning critical thinking skills by providing them with their own personal dictionaries and reference materials. The materials are usually distributed in the third grade due to that being the age when students are taught to use the dictionary and begin to read for knowledge. The initiative, led by local businesses and community organizations, has distributed dictionaries to over 18 million children nationwide since the start of the program in 1995. The Babylon Rotary Dictionary Project Committee will be distributing the same materials to all third grade students in the remaining schools within the North Babylon School District in the coming weeks.

champions. The students kept track of the minutes they read on tally sheets – each of which included a set of 10 torches, each representing 15 minutes of reading. For each 150 minutes the students read, a colorful ring was placed on a display outside the cafeteria. The school’s reading goal was set at 32,000 minutes. At the grade school, students and staff members also dressed up based on three theme days, were pictured on a “Get Caught Reading” display board after being “caught” in the act, took part in a reada-thon and donated used books to local families as well as Reading Reflections or Amanda’s Book Rescue. Both schools also teamed up for several buddying reading program days.

Babylon Elementary and Memorial Grade School students celebrated literacy through a series of fun and educational activities this March. In coordination with the buildings’ K-6 PTA, the students took part in this year’s Parents as Reading Partners program, themed the Olympics – Faster, Higher, Stronger. Families at both schools were encouraged to make time daily to enjoy reading materials together and students were invited to take part in several themed events each week. At the elementary school, students proudly dressed as their favorite story time character, wore their pajamas and brought their favorite bedtime story to school, had a teddy bear picnic with a cuddly stuffed animal, and enjoyed a breakfast of

Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on.
