The North Babylon High School Drama Club presented its remarkable rendition of “Once on this Island” to the community, district staff members and students. The musical, directed by theatre director and teacher Lisa Drance, was based upon the novel “My Love, My Love,” by Rosa Guy, and starred several standout student actors, including Tanya Estela, Christian Aufiero, Nikki Moran, Daniel Benson, Christian Segers and Victoria Mangiapane. The

cast, ensemble, stage crew and production team also hosted a special showing of the play for senior citizens following a luncheon. The drama club’s precise and passionate performances of “Once on this Island” highlighted its amazing talents and served as a testament to the stellar level of arts-instruction at North Babylon School District. Moving Day It finally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a filter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and

relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet. And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to flit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique. These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few flakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all). I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!

I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, floating above the gravel. Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue flakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff. When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy! I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment. Thanks to those readers who continue to check in on my livelihood and compliment my columns. I’ve even been told a book deal should be forthcoming! Read-alouds by parents, teachers or principals took place throughout the day at Forest Avenue, Tooker Avenue, Santapogue,

JFK and South Bay elementary schools. After reading some Dr. Seuss classics, Forest Avenue students used their own imaginations to create seussical hats and hot air balloons. Using their Chromebooks, students ventured online to learn more about the author. Students at South Bay School brought their

favorite Dr. Seuss books to school to read with their classmates, and many writing activities were focused on the famous author/illustrator. All the classrooms even had a special guest visitor, the Cat in the Hat, who distributed bookmarks to all the students. The Dictionary Project is dedicated in memory of Babylon Rotary Club past president William DeLuca Jr., who in addition to being a member of the Rotary Club for many years also served as an educator and administrator in Babylon. Babylon School district administrators and local

politicians, including Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, representatives from the office of Sen. Phil Boyle and Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, gathered during the March 2nd presentation of the dictionaries to present plaques and proclamations to William France for his years of service to the Babylon community and his

donation to the Dictionary Project. Babylon Grade School’s third-graders also presented Rotary Club members with a plaque in appreciation of the dictionary donation. “This was such a wonderful collaborative initiative by the Rotary Club, our new educational partners,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Our students are so appreciative.”

Student Press Conference

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently held a “Student Press Conference” which took place in Babylon High School’s library. The event was attended by students from the classes

of Mr. Ryan and Mr. Skaar, who both saw this as a unique real-world teaching opportunity. The purpose of holding an event such as this is to provide students with a chance to have

a direct and open line of communication with an elected official from their community. Also, by arranging the official’s appearance as a press event, students can learn how the media interacts with our government. It is hoped that this exposure will inspire some students to consider journalism as a career and/or simply become more involved in civics. “Elected officials very often talk about issues related to young adults, but do not provide a platform for open and

honest discussions,” said McCaffrey. “Our young people here in Suffolk County are just too important, and they deserve to be heard.” Prior to the event, students formulated their questions based on their own unique set of interests and concerns. Although the process was assisted by their teachers, the students’ questions were not heavily restricted as to their form or content. This preparation ultimately facilitated a lively conversation filled with a variety of topics ranging

from environmental issues to job creation. “There are many challenges that are in Long Island’s future,” added McCaffrey. “Whether it is keeping our water clean or fighting drug abuse, or a host of other issues, these students are a crucial part of the dialogue. I was impressed by the depth of their understanding and sincerity of their concerns.” In these trying economic times, schools have been increasingly focusing on providing innovative learning opportunities

for students, which often involves going outside the four walls of the classroom. Babylon High School’s educators and administrators clearly recognize the enormous challenges ahead, as they are tackling them head on to ensure the success of their students well into the 21st century. Artistically Scientific North Babylon School District students learned about a unique process combining art and science during a visit to the factory floor of the Evans Drums Company, a division of D’Addario in Farmingdale. Thirty drummers from the Robert Moses Middle School and North Babylon High School marching bands saw step-by-step how drum heads are made in activities designed to blend the arts with science and mathematics. They observed firsthand the

custom-designed robots used to cut, share and secure the drum heads that they play each day in their classes. They also learned how shape, size and texture can affect pitch and dynamics. As they navigated the factory, students interacted with engineers, workers and musicians to further enhance their learning. “We love to bring the students such authentic and exciting STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts,

mathematics) activities because they truly engage the whole child,” said district Director of Arts Dr. Kim Lowenborg-Coyne. “When the students are this excited about learning, they achieve great things in all areas of study, not just the arts. This was a great day, and we are very grateful to Ben Smith, social media coordinator for D’Addario, and to the whole Evans division for offering us this unique opportunity.”

Members of the Babylon Rotary joined together with several local legislators for their Dictionary Project breakfast and presentation. The event took place at Babylon Memorial Grade School, and was attended by Rotarians, elected officials or their representatives, teachers and 3rd grade students. The Dictionary Project is a special cause that the Babylon Rotary advances due to their unwavering commitment to improving lives through education and civic involvement. Essentially, by putting dictionaries into the hands of young students, the Rotarians are equipping them with foundational

tools that will last a lifetime. The Dictionary Project also serves as a way for the members of the Babylon Rotary to remember William E. DeLuca, Jr., one of its distinguished past presidents. Mr. DeLuca was a long-time educator and administrator in the Town of Babylon, thus dedicating the Dictionary Project in his name was deemed to be a fitting and thoughtful tribute. Likewise, each year, a special honoree is recognized for his or her contributions to community advancement. This year’s honoree was William “Bill” P. France, who is the Chairman of the Board and CEO of Strahl

Val & Sal Honored Babylon School District has announced its valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2016. With a weighted GPA of 104.45, Adam Gumbardo has been named valedictorian. Ryan Cosgro is the salutatorian for the Class of 2016 with a weighted GPA of 102.69. Aside from his scholarly achievements, Gumbardo is vice president of Student Council, and a member of Class Cabinet, Language Club, Math Team, Leo Club, SADD, Science Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. He plays for the varsity lacrosse

team and has volunteered his time throughout his academic career as a peer tutor and mentor. Gumbardo was responsible for setting up the Seventh Grade Orientation Day for prospective new seventhgraders. Cosgro is a member of Leo Club, DECA, Class Cabinet and Student Council. He also participates in Jazz Band and plays varsity soccer. He is a recognized member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Business Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. He has been named an

“outstanding” participant at NYSSMA competitions. Cosgro volunteers at the Leo Club’s Senior Citizen Dinner and the yearly Parent Open Orientation. “These two young men are outstanding ambassadors of our school district,” said Babylon Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We are all very proud of their academic and extracurricular accomplishments as they look forward to bright futures.” Gumbardo and Cosgro have not yet made a final college decision.
