Why? Because I live here and I love all that the Village has to offer. I love the parks, the pool, the golf course and all the services.

It has a real small town feel. I also like the way the Village is run.

The Mayor and Trustees are dedicated to protecting and preserving the quality of life here. I also like the way they watch the budget.

The last two years had a 0% tax increase while continuing all services.

I love the fact that the quality of life in the Village is responsible for the continued increase in home values. And if I have a problem, I know who to talk to.

That’s why I’m showing my support and voting for the Better Babylon Party. They have constantly safeguarded our quality of life and our tax dollars.

Adding Magic As part of its ongoing slate of social-emotional themed lessons, Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District hosted “Just Add Magic” among students at each grade level.

During their lunch times, students were

assigned randomly to sit at different cafeteria tables - each of which was labeled with a character trait and various social scenarios designed to start conversations among them.

Students were tasked with discussing their feelings and what

they believe is the proper way to respond to social interactions.

“Just Add Magic” helped to foster students’ development of appropriate socialemotional responses and promoted the importance of good behavior.

‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City.

The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know.

And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen.

March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home.

So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District is challenging its students to engage in different reading activities during its Pick A Reading Partner program from February 27th to March 16th.

This year’s theme, “Oh, the Places We’ll Go,” is a modeled on the book by Dr. Seuss. During PARP, students are encouraged to read with their parents for at least 15 minutes a day and keep a log of their time

spent reading. Students sign a pledge to be an active reading partner during the three-week period.

The event kicked off on February 27th with a Community Reader Day. With the doors throughout the school decorated in Dr. Seuss-themed books, the students spent Read Across America Day on March 2 engaged in activities around his famous books.

Wearing their “Cat in the Hat” striped hats, students partnered with their buddies to conduct

reading celebrations. In the library, PARP activities also featured hands-on science learning, allowing students to make their own oobleck like the Dr. Seuss story of “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.”

Different spirit days at the school tied reading and fun together with Dr. Seuss-themed PARP activities including “Fox in Socks” Day, “On Beyond Zebra” Day and “The Sleep Book.”

Throughout February and March, fifth-graders at each elementary school in the North Babylon School District visited the Heckscher Museum in Huntington for a viewing of an exhibit titled, “Mort

Richard Shaffer. They then showcased the remarkable talents that earned them the White House invitation by performing for meeting attendees.

The White House visit was comprised of the group’s performance of a variety of musical selections over the course of two hours. To prepare for the performance, the group rehearsed each school day, in addition to some weekend days. To be considered for invitation, the district submitted an extensive application that included video and audio audition materials, and supporting calls were made by local officials on behalf of the district.

The North Babylon Administrator’s Association purchased several items from the White House Historical Association including metal-plated bookmarks featuring a view of the White House Christmas tree from the East Room,

the great ceremonial room of the White House in the State Floor. These bookmarks were presented to each student. The district also extends its sincerest appreciation to RSVP Tuxedos in Bay Shore for its generosity in helping to outfit the students with tuxedo and shoe rentals at no cost.

“We’re overjoyed for our students,” said district Director of Art and Music Programs Dr. Kim Lowenborg-Coyne.

“We truly appreciate all the hard work that has gotten them to this level of achievement, and we know that this performance will inspire them to continue to perform music throughout their lives.”

North Babylon Select Choir’s incredible honor is a testament to the level of musical instruction in the district as well as the students’ and faculty members’ skills and dedication to choral excellence.

VISITING THE WALL - Third-graders throughout Babylon Memorial Grade School recently took part in an important classroom lesson focused on the differences and similarities between Chinese and American culture. After their lessons, the students applied their knowledge to an artistic project and created paper dragons with facts written onto them, which were posted along the walls of the third-grade hallway.

Members of the North Babylon High School Select Choir, who had the prestigious honor of performing at the White House as part of its Holiday Open House, were honored at the board of education’s February meeting. This was the first time in the school district’s history that the group was invited to perform on the White House’s grand stage.

At the meeting, Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach commended director Christina Henderson and each of the 30 students for their unwavering commitment to their crafts and for earning this tremendous honor. He then showed a video, which also featured various photos, of the group’s visit. Each student received a copy of this video as a gift — in addition to certificates — and the group collectively also received two proclamations from Babylon Town Supervisor
