Why suffer with an old, inefficient, drafty heating system. Call us today. Switch to natural gas heat.
It was in the spirit of his father’s quote that Darren founded Race For Kids. com, where the Krantz Motorsports Nascar Team runs Modified & late Model race cars traveling up and down the East coast of the USA raising money each lap the cars complete. The relief and much needed assistance Darren’s charity brings to those it helps continue to drive his efforts. Darren’s mission statement for this cause is that, “victory lane is not a road on a race track; it’s a world where no family in need goes without support.” For more information about Angela’s House and to purchase tickets or sponsorships, please visit www.angelashouse.org . For more information on Race for Kids please visit http://www.raceforkids. com/. Also, please visit the Facebook page at w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / angelashouse.

Tickets and sponsorships on all levels are available at www. angelashouse.org. There will be a beautiful cocktail hour followed by dancing and a full dinner as well as our famed Chinese Auctions for all tastes. Darren’s father, Arthur Krantz, instilled the importance of giving back at a very young age. Arthur Krantz, the Chairman of PRC industries and Founder of We Care for Kids, has long said, “With success comes obligation.”

We urge all young girls to get involved in the robotics program, where you will learn about science and have fun as well.” For more information on SBPLI, visit www.sbpli. org.

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) is announcing that March is Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month and is urging girls to get involved in robotics as a way to become interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month was created by the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Network, a notfor-profit organization that encourages young women to pursue careers in STEM. According to the EYH Network, girls become most interested in these areas of study when they are in middle school. This season, SBPLI had 110 elementary and middle school teams compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying

Are you all enjoying your one extra hour of daylight? Feels more springy already, doesn’t it? Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. After that, it’s only a matter of time ‘til we’re dying Easter eggs, breaking out the pastels and looking to plant our gardens. After journeying to Ireland this past summer, it was fascinating to see how little the homeland pays attention to this
“holiday.” It is a uniquely American celebration of… well, in theory, Irish pride. In reality… let’s just say, Irish heritage seems to be optional in the grand parade of drunkenness and debauchery that descends upon the entire month of March here in New York. But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterflies and flowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. Get out the cleaning supplies, put away any lingering remnants of winter, and start redecorating for this
new season of rebirth. So, take solace. It’s been one long, tedious winter, to be sure. But spring is ready to be sprung upon us all. Open the windows, let the light in, stop and smell the flowers – once they’ve begun to bloom, of course. Pretty soon, the snowcovered landscape will be a distant memory. We’ve all claimed we’re going to enjoy this upcoming spring and summer that much more after the last several months of bone-chilling cold. So let’s follow through on that, shall we? No time like the present to begin anew.

How To Mail A Valentine With the use of email technology, learning to write a letter has become a lost art. Kindergarten students in Yvonne Szpilka’s class at Santapogue Elementary School, however, have been finessing their letterwriting skills by learning how to write letters and address an envelope. The students first wrote secret valentines to their
families. Part of the lesson included writing their address on the envelope, which contained the secret valentine and an “I Love You” photo. In addition, Ms. Szpilka taught the students about the post office and what information needs to be included on the front of an envelope to be successfully delivered.

Spring Is In The Air The Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for everyone to celebrate the arrival of spring by planting trees. Join the Arbor Day Foundation in March 2014 and receive 10 free white flowering dogwood trees. “White flowering dogwoods will add beauty to your home throughout the year,” said John Rosenow, founder the chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Dogwoods are known for their showy spring flowers, scarlet autumn foliage and red
berries that attract songbirds during winter.” The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation’s Trees for Americas campaign. The trees will be shipped postpaid with the enclosed planting instructions at the right time for planting between March 1st and May 31st. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of charge. Arbor Day Foundation members also receive a subscription to Arbor Day,
the Foundation’s bimonthly publication, and The Tree Book, which contains information about tree planting and care. To become a member of the Foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Dogwood Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by March 30th, 2014, or join online at arborday.org/ march.

Suffolk County Legislator William J. Lindsay III. The observatory’s 10inch Meade RCX400 Ritchey-Chretien telescope has a resolving power of 0.45 arc seconds, which is equivalent to being able to see a dime a little more than five miles away, and is housed under a 20 ½ foot rotating dome atop the Smithtown Sciences Building and equipped with networked computer controls allowing partial operation from remote locations. Full networking and remote operation are planned in the near future. The instrument can also be operated via electronic hand controls and is equipped with software that accesses a catalog of coordinates for 145,000 celestial objects that make viewing and moving from one object to another easier. The telescope’s primary mirror also has ultrahigh transmission coatings to help increase light transmission by 20 percent, making objects brighter, and is mounted to a 12 foottall cylindrical metal pier that is filled with sand to dampen vibrations. There is an additional vibration dampening system on top of the pier that was designed and installed by Suffolk County Community College Science Department faculty, consisting of metal plates with rubber spacers. Astronomers using the new telescope can also record what they are seeing through the college’s CCD Camera equipped with filters that meet astronomical research standards. The college is working to open the Observatory, by appointment, to small groups from the public on Friday nights later this spring. College President McKay said an

opportunities for our county’s young students to allow them to reach their full potential,” stated Senator John Flanagan, Chairman of the New York State Senate Committee on Education. “Congratulations to everyone involved for turning this vision into reality.” “The new observatory at Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus showcases the institution’s groundbreaking teaching initiatives and highlights the school’s dedication to science and technology,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “Suffolk County Community College remains at the forefront of academic research, and as Chair of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Education Committee, I continue to support our college’s educational excellence.” “I am thrilled that our community college has a new Observatory that will be a great research tool for the students majoring in physics/astronomy. Considering that the only other educational institution that has one in Suffolk County is Stony Book University, this is a very impressive addition for the college,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta of Fort Salonga. “This is an exciting moment for our community college and our community overall,” Legislator Trotta added. “As a Suffolk County Community College alumnus, I am proud to see the extraordinary improvements Dr. McKay and his staff have made to all of our campuses. I believe that adding an observatory to our Selden campus will not only draw our residents to the college, but will also serve as an attraction for visitors to enjoy, “said

Not only does it allow us to investigate scientific questions, it provides an opportunity to share the excitement of looking out into the universe with the people of Suffolk County,” said Professor Thomas Breeden, Chairman of the Physical Sciences Department. “Our acquisition of the observatory validates that the County, our sponsor, has confidence in our programs and in turn demonstrates our commitment to the scientific community,” Breeden explained. “The County and College’s commitment will now enable us to apply for grants from organizations such as The National Science Foundation,” Breeden said. “I congratulate Suffolk County Community College on the opening of its new Observatory. The research conducted will result in a greater understanding of astronomy and provide students, professors and the community at large with a new resource,” said New York State Senator and Chairman of the New York State Select Committee on Higher Education Kenneth P. The stars are shining a bit brighter on the Suffolk County Community College Ammerman Campus with the opening of the college’s new stateof-the-art observatory where star gazers can peer into the sky and look more than a billion years back in time. Suffolk County Community College now has one of only four observatories in our county − Stony Brook University, Custer in Southold, the Vanderbilt Museum and Montauk are the other four – and Suffolk Community’s is among the largest. In astronomy, first light is the first use of a telescope (or, in general, a new instrument) to take an astronomical image after it has been constructed. This is often not the first viewing using the telescope; optical tests have been performed to adjust the components. Despite this, a first light is always a moment of tremendous excitement, both for those who design and build the telescope and for the astronomical community at large. “This is a fantastic new addition to our College,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, “that will provide research opportunities for faculty and astronomy majors, as well as enhance our college’s reputation in the scientific community while educating the public about astronomy through public outreach.” “The College’s new observatory offers our students and faculty the opportunity to conduct research and share information with other students and scientists throughout the world,” said Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees Chairwoman Dafny J.

Big, Colorful Ideas For Small Spaces (NAPSI)—The C(NAPSI)— Making a small room appear larger can be as simple as using color creatively. To add some breathing room to a compact space, all you need are some colorful ideas. “Color is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to transform the look and feel of a room,” says David Bromstad, HGTV® star and celebrity interior designer. “When used in a few well-chosen places, such as a feature wall or statement piece of furniture, color can have a big impact in a small space.” Bromstad offers these color tips for transforming a space from tiny to airy: Create a focal point with paint. Paint a statement wall that draws attention away from the size of your space and toward something beautiful and vibrant. Bright or bold colors work well, as the wall can appear to recede, creating the illusion of space. Go big with lighter and softer colors. In areas beyond the feature wall, use lighter and softer colors to make the space seem larger. Light blues and greens add significant light subtly to a room. Coordinate your colors.
Stretch your space and maximize impact by using color to coordinate your rooms and decor. HGTV® HOME by Sherwin-Williams offers pre-coordinated collections of color, paint and wallpaper. The color palettes can be used to ensure that your walls, furniture and accessories help create a cohesive look. Reflect upon something. Placed opposite a window or side by side, mirrors can spread light throughout the room to make spaces feel
larger. A tall mirror draws the eye up, making ceilings look taller. When angled toward your room’s focal wall, a mirror can also create the illusion of depth. Paint something unexpected. Think beyond your walls and consider painting your mailbox or address numbers on your home, a stairway banister or a piece of furniture. Add a colorful punctuation point by transforming a bedroom nightstand bright blue or a desk chair in an unexpected
orange. Everything else in the room will appear larger. “Clever use of color adds the illusion of space and injects personality into it as well. That’s what’s great about color; you can dramatically alter the look of a room while expressing yourself in a fun way,” Bromstad adds. For additional inspiration and information on HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams, visit www.sherwin-williams. com/hgtv.

Spring finds melted Pemigawasset River Brawling down the White Mountains Roaring into the Merrimack River Rushing out to the Atlantic Ocean Summer finds multi-colored bedrock Sparkling like a variegated necklace Winter finds footprints of Black bear, moose and fox Hungrily carved in thick snow Preserved in layers of ice The Pemi slowly carves a notch Over long, silent time We will visit again Remain there.

When will this pain go away? When will my tears dry? When will I smile at the thought of you and not feel the blood drain from my heart How do I stop missing you? When does emptiness change to peace? Why is it getting harder instead of easier? Why do you avoid their name? Erasing them causes me more pain Though tears well in my eyes And I forget to keep them there I blink and a stream quickly stains my skin It’s a fight I can’t win I’ll mask my pain with a smile today When you ask, I’ll pretend everything is okay E-mail Your Submissions To: Jamie Lynn Ryan jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com Or Mail To: 565 Broadhollow Road, Suite 3, Farmingdale, NY 11735

as a county legislator, he served as Babylon Town Councilman, consultant and deputy director to the town’s Industrial Development Agency, and chairman of the Town of Babylon Democratic Party. Horsley is also an adjunct professor of history at Farmingdale State College, a position he previously held at St. John’s University (from which he holds doctoral and master’s degrees in modern world history). “Wayne has been a friend to our organization in many ways over many years,” said Rose Norman, BVAC co-president. “He’s been instrumental in obtaining grant money for us, through the county’s Economic Development office, and in general has been such a great help to the Village. He’s an obvious choice for us to honor!” For his part, Horsley said, “Since this recognition is coming from my home
town, some of my most proud efforts have been involved with the Village,” including as early member and past president of the Babylon Beautification Society, which led to emceeing the society’s annual fair for at least 20 years, along with “heavy involvement” in what he calls “projects of love” that have enhanced the village’s visual appeal (such as Old Town Hall; the village gazebo; the statue “Sea Dreams” outside Babylon Library; the Robert Moses statue outside Village Hall; the replica fountain outside the Historical Society and repairs to that building; the memorial tree program; the cherry trees throughout Argyle Park; and more. Walking With God Through Grief and Loss By Joyce Rupp, O.S.M.
One of the most pain filled letters I ever received came from a young mother whose first-born had died of AIDS. She was overwhelmed with the depth of this loss. It was a doubly crushing blow to her since she did not know she was a carrier of the disease until her daughter was born. As I read her letter, I sensed a deep desire in her to walk with God even though she found no comfort when she tried to pray. Over and over she pleaded for some insight, some direction, on how to relate to God during her time of darkness.

The members of the Fashion Club at West Babylon Senior High School recently took part in the national Teens for Jeans campaign and collected a total of 75 pairs of jeans for disadvantaged teens. The campaign, organized by dosomething.org and
Aéropostale, encourages students to collect new and gently used jeans for teens living in local shelters. Collection bins were arranged throughout the building for students to drop off their donations. As an incentive for the students to contribute to the cause,
the aforementioned organizations offered a grand prize of $5,000 for the school that collected the most jeans, along with a new pair of jeans for every student in the school and a party for the entire student body.

Livin’ Good
BABYLON - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY MARCH 12, 2014 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
2012 Babylon High graduate Mike Mejer began his clothing line, Livin’ Good, about a year ago. Although Mejer is only 19 years-old, and a sophomore at Dowling College, the idea behind his clothing line comes from traveling
the world. While on his travels, Mejer always took a piece of the culture from each country back home with him. His experiences in each place were different, yet one thing always stayed the same. Mejer noticed
that those who were less materialistic seemed to be happiest. Those people were always smiling, making jokes, and enjoying every second they spent with one another. Mejer was so moved by this that it became the
Collection Days At Santapogue Elementary School in West Babylon, members of the student council, under the direction of adviser Sue Saldano, decided to help local food pantries in
celebration of the 100th day of the school year. The goal was to collect 100 canned food items from members of the community, but the student council exceeded
that goal by collecting 246 items. “The student council is thrilled to donate so much to the food pantry,” Ms. Saldano said in appreciation of the students’ efforts.
foundation of his company. “There’s nothing wrong with being motivated to work hard to get your hands on that dream home, gold Rolex, or fancy car,” Mejer says. “What is wrong, is only chasing down those material
things, and neglecting the good times and good vibes. Have fun. Do what you love. Turn whatever it is you love into a career. That’s what Livin’ Good is all about.” With a company logo of an elephant wearing
sunglasses, Mejer’s company is producing t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and more. For more information visit www. livingoodco.com.
100 Days Project Nancy Febbraro’s second-grade students at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District celebrated the first 100 days of the school year by participating in a number
of educational and funfilled activities. As part of their English language arts class, the students were instructed to write 100 words they found in their classroom. During a combined art and ELA
project, students drew a picture depicting how they believed they would look at 100 years old and wrote sentences describing their appearance and activities.
