I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

HOMETOWN HEROES - Last month, two local veterans were honored by the Town of Babylon Teamsters City Employees Union Local 237 as “Hometown Heroes” for their accomplishments and service both here and abroad. The February 13th Babylon School District Board of Education Meeting celebrated student accomplishments throughout all grade levels. To begin the night’s recognitions, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students who represent Girl Scout Troop 283 were honored for recently earning the Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. According to the Girl Scouts of America’s website, this award is attained by contributing a positive change to your neighborhood or school in an effort to make it a better place. As part of the district’s ongoing STEAM initiatives, students throughout the district are engaging in hands-on and critical thinking programs regularly. Welcome Bench A new handcrafted bench at Babylon Memorial Grade School is offering students a unique place to sit, read and relax thanks to a joint effort by the school’s sixth-grade art club and a community member. The “Welcome Bench” was unveiled during a commemorative ceremony
in early February and students were eager to begin using it. Currently in its permanent position in the school lobby, the bench will provide students with a relaxing place to sit and take part in leisurely activities, such as reading which ties into the school’s wildly successful Pick a
Reading Partner program. The beautiful bench was designed by Eddie Altman, whose grandchildren currently attend Babylon schools. Art teacher Pat Stork, with assistance from her sixth-grade art club members, decorated the bench to reflect the school’s creative environment.

The Right Notes Babylon Junior-Senior High School is proud to announce that multiple student-musicians have earned high honors and recognitions in light of their outstanding musical talents. Student-musicians Emma Schubart (orchestra) and Lindsey Daily (women’s chorus) received the high honor of All-Eastern Honors Musicians. The two seniors represent the top 5 percent of student-musicians from the east coast. Additionally, five students were selected for honors
at the county and regional level. Percussionists Matthew Batura, a sophomore, and Matthew Minicozzi, an eighthgrade student, were selected to perform in the SCMEA AllCounty Percussion Ensemble and the SCMEA All-County Middle School Instrumental Jazz Band, respectively. Senior Scott Sgueglia, junior Sophia Sherman, sophomore Peter Schubart and eighth-grader Ethan Schubart showcased their talents during the Long Island String Association Festival this January. These students each earned the top
musical honors based on their scores at the NYSSMA solo and ensemble festival last spring and teacher recommendation. “I am incredibly proud of these student-musicians and all they have been able to accomplish throughout their musical careers,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda J. In order to enroll in the program for September, children must be 5 years old on or before December 1st, 2017 and be registered during the open registration period. This year, residents can register their children on: Wednesday, March 15th 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. 12:30 - 2 p.m.

The Knights of Columbus of the 8th New York District recently held the District’s annual Free Throw Basketball Championship. The event was held in the gymnasium at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish
in Deer Park on Saturday, February 18th at 9:30 a.m. Boys and Girls between the ages of 9 through 14 who were winners at their council levels competed against each other. The participating councils were Our Lady of
the Rosary Council #4428 in Deer Park and Our Lady of Grace Council #11968 in West Babylon. The eleven winners will be advancing to the Suffolk County Championship on March 11th.

Souper Bowl Babylon School District recently came together to host a Souper Bowl of Caring – Charity Cook-Off and Cake-Off Fundraiser event. The program was a community-based gathering that brought more than 40 community members and local businesses to demonstrate their culinary abilities in an effort to support both local and nationally recognized charities and organizations. Throughout the event, district faculty, staff, students and family members created a number of delectable dishes ranging from colorfully decorated SOUPER BOWL - Babylon School District recently took part in the community- cupcakes all the way to based Souper Bowl of Caring event. students a chance to prizes that included a pizza party with the principals, and a free tuxedo and prom dress. “It’s events like these that help to instill a strong sense of community which we take pride in having here at Babylon,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Due to the students’ outstanding efforts during the Souper Bowl of Caring, charities such as Boots on the Ground and Habitat for Humanity will be supplied with generous donations.” Prior to the big event, staff and students promoted the day by decorating school windows with a Super Bowl and Panther Pay It Forward theme, and wore their favorite sports-
themed jerseys. The district raised a total of $3,300 that will be used in the Pay It Forward initiative to support Boots on the Ground and Suffolk County Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, all of the leftover soup and chili was donated to a community soup kitchen, and six boxes of canned goods were collected for the Rock Can Roll organization.
