The evening gave students in grades K-8 and their families an opportunity to spark their interest in the STEM fields. SENIOR VOCALIST - West Babylon Senior High School senior Samantha Lobasso participated in the Carnegie Hall Honors Performance Series in New York City on February 7th. She was one of 141 students chosen out of about 4,500 students who applied to sing with the choir. In order to be chosen for the performance, Lobasso was required to video record herself singing a classical piece and send it to the committee. After she was chosen, she traveled to New York City for three days of rehearsals with the choir prior to the performance.

March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new.

A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway.

Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us.

There is something about the blossoming of trees and flowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have

been mired in since the holiday season.

Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring.

That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netflix.

The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow

days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize.

That’s the thing about time.

When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores.

Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today.

Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun.

May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

North Babylon Public Library

School in the West Babylon School District celebrated the Year of the Monkey on February 10th in honor of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Students read Chinese literature including folktales, fairy tales and legends. Lessons of the day focused on Chinese New Year traditions and Chinese zodiac signs, and to show off their creative talents, students crafted and decorated their own Chinese lanterns. The West Babylon School District held its second annual STEM Night on February 11th at the Senior High School, featuring dozens of handson activities, experiments, games, mini-labs and more. The evening gave students in grades K-8 and their families an opportunity to spark their interest in the STEM fields.

Under the direction of West Babylon Senior High

School science teacher Aimee Mendoza, the West Babylon Senior High School Math and Science Honor Society, National Technology Honor Society and Science Club coordinated and presented the activities.

Kicking off the evening with a “Fire and Ice” assembly by Mad Science, visitors had the chance to engage in a variety of activities. The cafeteria

featured arts and crafts and a petting zoo, while the gym housed a technology showcase including demonstrations by the Robotics Club.

Up on the third floor of the school, students toured 28 different rooms, with activities ranging from cotton candy polymers to slime time to butterfly symmetry.

SUCCESSFUL STEM - More than 400 students came to the West Babylon School District’s second annual STEM Night on February 11th at the Senior High School.

they hung them in the halls for all to see. Many staff members dropped by their class to thank them and tell them how those words touched them and really made them feel special. It was a wonderful experience for everyone at Parliament Place.

Students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park had a great time celebrating their 100th Day of School this month, combining learning, laughter, brain power and physical activity. Each second grader created a poster project using one hundred items of his or her choice.

Creations of every kind were presented, including 100 gumballs in a gumball machine, 100 goldfish

in a fish bowl and 100 pom-poms on a cupcake representing sprinkles.

Students also enjoyed a classroom hunt for one hundred Hershey’s Kisses. Each chocolate was numbered, so once a student found a kiss, he or she placed it on the 100Day chart. Once all of the treats were placed, it was time for the math fun to begin!

Both an artist and art educator she has let her inspiration guide her to determine the media that would best accomplish her artistic vision.

Recently, Allyson Uttendorfer has explored printmaking, ceramics, drawing, painting, mixed media and photography to express ideas. She never without a camera or sketchbook. She has worked at the Heckscher Museum of Art for five years, serving as the Director of Education, and remain on the museum’s Education Committee as an educational consultant.

Currently, she is the photography and Advanced Placement art history teacher at Half

Hollow Hills High School East. Allyson is a Babylon resident and her art work has been displayed at Apples N Arts Art Show at the Conklin House.
