West Babylon JHS To Host St. Baldrick’s

West Babylon Junior High School will host its fifth annual St. Baldrick’s event on March 10 from 6-8:30 p.m. There will be activities for the whole family, such as carnival games, face painting, hats for sale, food sales and raffles. All funds raised will

help reach the school’s goal for 2023 of $40,000 for a five-year total of $200,000 to help find a cure for children’s cancer.

Other activities include:

• Head shaving, live music and dance performances in Eagle Hall (auditorium)

• Knit items for sale

• Food and beverages for purchase in the cafeteria and at the outdoor beverage cart

• Raffles including Yankees and Mets tickets, gift cards, specialty cookies

Student-Artists Honored

STUDENT-ARTISTS HONORED - At the Feb. 16 North Babylon School District board of education meeting, several student-artists were recognized for their accomplishments. North Babylon High School students Matthew Holcombe, Emily Miccio and Peyton Silvestri were honored for being named All-County Artists. Silvestri was chosen as New York State Art Teacher’s Association artist of the month. Her artwork will be featured on New York State Youth Art Month website and social media platforms leading up to Youth Art Month in March. Her artwork was also chosen as the overall winner for the NYSATA YAM Flag contest. She won art materials from Blick art supplies. In Loving Memory Of John G. Vogt

February 15, 2023, was a very sad day for the American Venice Civic Association. It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Vogt. John was the driving force of our Civic, and he was an Executive Board Member and President. John lost his fight with Cancer and leaves behind his wife Candida, daughter Nicole 29, son Robert 27, and daughter Emily 25. His passion for his community was second to none. He was a great leader who spent all of his time working on making his home community, The American Venice, a better place to live. John tried his best and fought long enough to see the beginnings of the improvements here in the Venice that he started. It hurts our Hearts that he did not get to see the

completion of the Living Shore Line in the West Venice, the raising of the roads, and also the reconstruction of the “Circle” in the Grande Canal.

John also volunteered his talents to the Copiague Kiwanis Club as a board member and as secretary, Boy Scout Troop 284 Copiague leader and he was a member of the Sunnyside

Chamber of Commerce - Business Improvement District.

John was a giving man, not only with his time but was known to help financially if a person was down on their luck. John was a gentleman, a true friend, a great team player and all around wonderful man that will be missed terribly.

There will be a memorial service held on February 28, 2023, 5 PM - 9 PM at the Massapequa Funeral Home, located at 4980 Merrick Road, Massapequa Park, NY 11762. The Vogt family request that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in John Vogt’s memory to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Research, Boy Scout Troop 284, or The Copiague Kiwanis Club. The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.

Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner. A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements.
