Oh, the Places You’ll Go When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age. Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come. Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words
ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is. I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier. Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago. Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter. Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery. Your mountain is waiting. So . . . get on your way!

Partnership Program The Babylon Village Arts Council is proud to announce an art partnership program with the Babylon High School Art Department to foster the love of art in the next generation. Two Babylon High School students, Paula Romero Anna Schipf and Jacob Von Eeuhaut, will create works of art with supplies provided by the Babylon Village Arts Council in the amount of $200 per student.
Under the guidance of Cheryl Schweider, art teacher at Babylon High School, students will learn time management skills, budget constraints and design options. To experience a real life art exhibit, each participant exhibited their work at the 11th annual Outdoor Art show, entitled “Art by the Falls,” on May 19th in Argyle Park, which provided interaction with the public. By: Jon Taylor There has been a lot of conversation around town in regard to the two historic buildings at the corner of Cottage Row and West Main Street. The vintage home facing Main Street was of course the office of attorney Kevin Brosnahan, a well known barrister and long time fixture here in the village. The building behind the house was the original office of The Babylon Signal, and later the home of The Red Lion, a pub beloved by many who remember those days. Originally, the building was located on the south side of Main Street near what is now Realm Furniture. Unfortunately, after Mr. Brosnahan obtained and moved the building, it was only used for storage and
fell into disrepair. Years of neglect have resulted in severe deterioration. Subsequent to the demise of Mr. Brosnahan in June of 2015, the quaint house itself was neglected, and I understand that during the winter months frozen pipes burst, causing severe water damage to the structure. At last word, it is my understanding the current owner desired to demolish both structures, with a plan for retail space, apartments and a parking area. The matter has been referred to the Village Zoning Board. The Babylon Burger Bar is up and running! I have not yet had the opportunity to visit, but I have heard very favorable reports on their delicious food from a number of sources.

The event is held at the Babylon American Legion Hall on Grove Place and doors open at 6:30 p.m. It’s usually a sell-out, so plan on arriving early so you don’t get shut out! The Babylon American Legion will hold its famous St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance on Saturday, March 17th! The party is from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Legion Hall. Homemade corned beef and cabbage as always. $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance
in the photo on this page; she is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Food can be used to fend off the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages.
Flu shot and medications Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications — which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms — can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off. Stop germ proliferation Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people. Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill. Rest and restore Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus. People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.

Embracing germs: They’re not all bad
G
erms have gotten a somewhat undeserved reputation. For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid. However, not all germs must be avoided. Germs are tiny organisms that can enter the body through open cuts, the mouth, the nose and the eyes. Germs are found all over the world. The four main types of germs include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Bacteria are a type of germ that often get a bad rap but actually may have benefits that outweigh their negatives.
People frequently overlook good bacteria in an effort to eradicate bad bacteria, and that can have serious detriments. Unfortunately, the “antibacterial” products available for cleaning and medicines used for treating bacterial illnesses do not discriminate between good and bad germs. They simply eradicate them all. Heathline says that this can create an imbalance of bacteria in the body that may lead to harmful bacteria taking over. Harmful bacteria also may evolve to resist common treatments because of the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial medicines and products. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that antimicrobial agents have been used for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.
Although they’ve helped treat illnesses, these drugs have enabled the organisms they’re meant to destroy to adapt to them, making the drugs less effective. Some bacteria are even resistant to certain antibacterial drugs. The CDC says each year in the United States at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — with at least 23,000 people dying as a result of these infections. Various medical sources urge that regular handwashing with plain soap is enough for cleansing. Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure. People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

Bacteria are tiny, one-celled creatures that get nutrients from their environments to live. In some instances, that environment is the human body. Bacteria can reproduce inside and outside of the body. While bacteria that cause repeated infections might be considered bad, there actually are a host of good bacteria. Such bacteria help people digest food and protect against gastrointestinal upset,
such as diarrhea. Some bacteria may help people fight off illnesses caused by other bacteria or viruses, says research published in the journal Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology. Beneficial bacteria may help stimulate the immune system so that the body is better able to fight off diseases naturally.

Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.
When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet.

According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people
in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary fiber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of fish and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

CedarsSinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses.

When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur.
Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drugfree alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

Inside the eye, there is a lens, which is supposed to be clear, like a camera lens. If this lens becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract. So, a cataract is just a cloudy lens. If there is minimal cloudiness, the vision will not be affected, and that eye may still see well. Sometimes a new eyeglass prescription may help someone see better if there is a mild cataract. Some conditions that will cause a cataract to progress are: age, certain medications, injuries, poorly controlled diabetes, and some inherited conditions. If a cataract’s cloudiness increases to a point where new glasses cannot improve the vision, then surgery is recommended. Some of the symptoms patients may have from a cataract are: difficulty driving and seeing signs, difficulty reading fine print, excessive glare and halos around lights when
driving at night, intolerable glare when in sun, difficulty reading the captions on TV, and inability to see the computer screen clearly. When surgery is recommended, there are many options our patients have so we can customize their visual outcomes. When a cataract is removed, an artificial lens implant is placed in the eye to restore the vision. Different types of implants are available, and we can correct a patient’s vision so they can read without glasses, see distance without glasses, or in some cases use special multifocal lenses so patients can see both distance and close-up without depending on glasses. When a patient becomes a candidate for surgery, many tests and measurements are done, (painless), and then reviewed by the surgeon and patient together to determine the appropriate type of lens for that patient. There are also lens implants that will correct astigmatism, an optical defect of the eye that is usually present throughout life, and treated with glasses or
contact lenses. Now, we can implant a special lens that will correct astigmatism, also to reduce the patient’s dependence on glasses, and to increase the quality of vision after surgery. Over the past 5 years, we have introduced in Suffolk County, the use of a special laser, (a femtosecond laser), to assist with surgery. This laser performs the most difficult and important part of the surgical procedure in about 1 second, reducing the risk of surgery and improving the outcomes of the procedure. The laser can also treat astigmatism, which allows our patients to see very clearly post surgery. Our experience with laser cataract surgery has been extremely positive, with our patients achieving exceptional visual results with very little risk of complications. The actual surgical procedure is performed in a cataract surgical center, as an outpatient. The painless surgery takes about 15 minutes, the patient has light IV sedation for comfort, then has a snack and is discharged to home. There is no patch or stitches and
most patients are able to drive the next day, and return to work in 2-3 days. Only one eye is operated on at a time, and usually, if there is a cataract in the other eye, its surgery is performed within 1-2 weeks. Our patients enjoy excellent vision after this low risk surgery. Of course, there is risk of complications and all precautions are always taken to ensure a successful outcome. Even high-risk patients do well with our modern state of the art treatment and extreme care we personally give our patients. The World Health Organization says that one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders in their lives. Roughly 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, which puts mental disorders among the leading causes of ill health and disability worldwide.
The Mayo Clinic says CBT talk therapy is performed in a structured setting, with a limited number of sessions. CBT identifies negative thinking so that challenging situations can be viewed more clearly and perceptions changed. While it is a tool in treating mental health disorders, anyone can benefit from CBT, especially those looking to cope with stress or other hurdles.
Mental health is not something people may feel comfortable discussing. Problems may go untreated for years, and some individuals may use selfmedicating behaviors such as drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs to alleviate their symptoms. Others continue to persist with illnesses when they do not have to. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the more successful methods to address mental health issues.
Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960s. Beck was doing psychoanalysis at the time and discovered there was a link between thoughts and feelings. Beck discovered people weren’t always aware of automatic thoughts that popped up in their minds, particularly those negative in nature. By identifying these thoughts, a client could overcome certain difficulties.
The National Association of CognitiveBehavioral Therapists defines CBT as a general term for a classification of therapies with certain similarities. It does not exist as a distinct therapeutic technique. CBT is a short-term, goaloriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a practical form to problem-solving, advises Psych Central. The power is in the hands of the person engaging in the therapy. The therapist simply provides the ideas to get started. CBT is used to treat a wide range of issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, relationship problems and more. The process involves
CBT is a balance between placing personal meaning on things and situations as well as the relationship between problems. Many therapists personalize CBT to meet the needs and personality of their patients. Individuals who prefer a nonpharmaceutical approach to treating their mental health condition may find CBT can be helpful. Stress or uncomfortable feelings may arise, but therapists can work to avoid uncomfortable situations. Finding a therapist with whom they feel comfortable can help people make the most of CBT.

Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My six-year-old asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Nana gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “Thats what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!” Hearing this, my grandson burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentlemen approached the table. He winked at my grandson and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my grandson asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the women whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae, and without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman.
