Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement
from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly
common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

Since 2007, SILO, AMVETS and Helen Keller Services for the Blind have worked cooperatively to increase awareness regarding the need for more Audible Crosswalks for the Visually Impaired and Physically Challenged. Audible Crosswalks are installed at busy intersections to allow visually impaired and physically challenged individuals to proceed safely through crosswalks after they receive an audible prompt to do so, such as a beeping noise or words that signify that it is now safe to cross the intersection. The goal of this program is to allow the visually impaired and physically challenged the opportunity to travel our intersections more safely thereby assuring these folks greater
independence, dignity and opportunity. SILO is the New York State Designated Center for Independent Living Services. It is a non-forprofit Human Services Agency dedicated to working with people with disabilities, elderly individuals and their families. SILO provides over 27 programs and services throughout the Long Island Region. The ultimate goal is to provide the necessary support for people with disabilities and the elderly to live independently in within their communities. On January 29th, Marilyn Tucci SILO Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator and Patrick Mitchell SILO Board Vice President made a presentation regarding the Services offered by SILO to the Disabled the Elderly and their Families on Long Island. The Presentation included a Power Point created by SILO Staff Members. Kathy Moore the Immediate Past President of the Babylon Rotary contacted SILO because she wanted the Rotary to develop an understanding of what SILO does to assist the Disabled and the Elderly in Suffolk County. SILO has been instrumental in having many Audible Crosswalks installed on behalf of Visually Impaired and Disabled Clients and there was significant interest and many questions during this

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with fellow members of the Town Board to present a check worth $64,303.50 to the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association Hurricane Relief Fund for direct monetary assistance to families impacted by Superstorm Sandy. These funds were a raised during last year’s Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride and were set aside to be donated to benefit victims of Superstorm Sandy at the request of the Wounded Warriors Project. Joining Supervisor
Schaffer for the check presentation were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Lindsay P. Henry and Councilman Tom Donnelly. Accepting the check on behalf of the Fire Chiefs Association were Association President Jim Harrington, Association member Jeff Thompson and former Councilwoman Ellen McVeety. The Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association Hurricane Relief Fund was founded in November of 2012 to provide assistance to those who experienced

great damage to their home and property as a result of Superstorm Sandy. To date, the Fire Chiefs Association has raised thousands of dollars, including $40,000 from their 2013 “Fill the Boot” event, which featured members of nearby volunteer fire departments raising money on local roadways by encouraging those passing by to drop

The money from the Hurricane Relief Fund is put into gift cards of $250 increments (one per household) to stores like Lowes Home Improvement and Target that are given to Sandy victims from all affected areas in the Town of Babylon for home repairs. Recipients must apply for assistance and are then selected by
a blind lottery. The Fire Chiefs Association will be distributing 258 more gift cards this spring. The Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride has been held every summer in the Town of Babylon for the past six years and is a 25 mile bicycle ride to benefit service members who have been injured in combat. Last year, thousands of participants braved the
record breaking heat to show their support and raise over $100,000, half of which was donated to the Hurricane Relief Fund. Many students took part in the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. In the weeks leading up to Jump Rope for Heart, physical education teachers worked on a jump roping unit and discussed the health benefits of jumping rope and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. South Bay Elementary School students played a game called Heart Healthy Relay. Teams were stationed around the perimeter of the gym. Each team had

Throughout the year, students and staff of the West Babylon Union Free School District strive to be mindful of their health. Efforts have been made throughout the district to encourage this mindset. During the month of February, the focus is on heart health. On February 7th, many of the district’s staff and students wore red to raise awareness of heart disease and its impact on women. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women, killing more that all forms of cancer combined. Donations
