Town of Babylon Promotes P.S. I Love You Day With Founders

On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, Town of Babylon officials were joined by the founders of P.S. I Love You Day, Brooke and Jaimie DiPalma, local school officials, and residents for a press conference discussing the importance of the day, held the second Friday of February each year. After the DiPalma sisters lost their father to suicide, they started P.S. I Love You Day with

the mission of supporting mental health awareness, decreasing bullying, and highlighting suicide prevention through education and compassion.

The event consisted of a program with remarks from Babylon Town Councilman Terence McSweeney, Brooke and Jaimie DiPalma, and Stephanie Hasandras, the principal of Robert Moses Middle School in North

Babylon. Town of Babylon officials, the DiPalma sisters, school officials, and all of the residents in attendance were dressed in purple, a staple of P.S. I Love You Day, and took photos on the steps of Babylon Town Hall. The cupola atop Babylon Town Hall as well as the columns of the building was lit up in purple in commemoration of P.S. I Love You Day.

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

Do you know who cleans and maintains many Long Island Courts?

A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.

As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.

As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”

Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and

a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”

TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.

Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

Local Foundation, Big Mission

The Chloe Belle Foundation is a local non-profit organization started by the family of Chloe. Chloe was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 25. She underwent countless treatments, but unfortunately the cancer only progressed. It eventually invaded her spine and left her paralyzed and in immense pain. Thirteen months later, Chloe passed away at home beside her family.

Chloe left a huge impact on those around her, she prioritized the happiness of others and brought joy wherever she went. The Lindberg Family started this foundation as a way to honor Chloe and continue her work here on earth. The mission of the Chloe Belle Foundation is to support children and young adults who have also been diagnosed with cancer, and offer them the same joy and light that Chloe herself was.

Remi Lindberg, President of The Chloe Belle Foundation said, “We have big goals for the foundation. I want Chloe to live on forever. She deserves

that. Most importantly, I want to bring Chloe’s kindness and love to the world on a large scale.”

The Chloe Belle Foundation will begin selling merchandise starting this February to benefit the foundation. They also will be hosting their annual toy drive in the spring, and will have more information on the event soon.

They will be collaborating with Mario’s Pizzeria in East Northport on February 21, 2023. When customers order on that day and mention The Chloe Belle Foundation, their foundation will receive 20% from the pre-tax sale.

New Village Collaboration: 4th Sunday Series

The Babylon Village Arts Council has partnered with the Babylon Village Historical & Preservation Society on a new and innovative program that will bring history and art to life through a cultural series of guest lectures. This program focuses on local writers, scholars, and artists while promoting discussions across disciplines and generations. Diverse topics will appeal to a variety of community members and all events will take place in the newly renovated Babylon Village Historical & Preservation Society Museum. Topics will be of interest to artists, students, families and seniors.

This program was awarded grant funding from the Statewide Community Regrant program administered through the Huntington Arts Council. These funds ensure the continued success of extraordinary arts and cultural activities throughout both Nassau and Suffolk counties and are made possible with support from the State & Local Partnerships (SLP) program of NYSCA and the Office of the Governor and the NYS Legislature.

BVAC Vice President, Allyson Uttendorfer, led the grant writing for this program. This is the 3rd grant that Uttendorfer wrote for BVAC through this program and all have been successfully awarded and implemented. The Creative Communities Grant is geared toward arts and cultural organizations

with community-based arts and cultural projects. The 4th Sunday Series is the perfect combination of community, culture and arts. Program Director for BVHS, Carolyn Romaine, coordinated the speakers based on a multitude of topics such as the Shipwreck of Hopes with Author Angela Reich, paintings by Richard Mayhew, Betty Parsons and Jane Wilson from the Heckscher Museum of Art and discussions from photojournalist John Lazzaro, among other topics, participants will see the world through varied lenses all connecting back to Long Island history and the shore life.

The series will conclude with an artist exhibition inspired by the topics that were featured throughout the series, specifically living on an Island and the coast. Participants can submit original work in any medium and they will be considered for our celebratory exhibition which will take place in December 2023. This culminating event will take place at the annual Wassail Bowl celebration held at the Babylon Village Historical & Preservation Society and will feature artists and community members. The next program in the series is February 26 at 2:00 pm: Journey of Hope: The Irish in New York with Tara Rider. Hands-On Lesson Explores Local Ecosystems

HANDS-ON LESSON EXPLORES LOCAL ECOSYSTEMS - Sixth grade students in Mr. Brodmerkel’s exploring science class at Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District had a special visit from Tracy Marcus from the Cornell Cooperative Extension Program in January. The statistics are in… recycling is not only good for the environment, but also for the economy. And a standout economic success story in recycling is HELPSY!

The environmental benefits of recycling are well documented and by themselves warrant a more sustainable lifestyle. With information gathered by the Recycling Economic Information Project (REI), an organization created in 2001 to encourage the development of an economic market for recycling and supported by the EPA, it is proven beyond a doubt that recycling not only conserves natural resources but recycling also strengthens our economy by creating jobs, wages and creating tax revenue.

A 2020 REI report showed the recycling industry (including glass, paper,

plastics, rubber, electronics, organic and construction and demolition materials) across the board created 681,000 jobs, $37.8 billion in wages, and $5.5 billion in tax revenue. Furthermore, on average… 1.17 jobs were created for every 1000 tons of recycled materials.

Rising above the rest by comparison, with 270 employees, HELPSY is the largest clothing collection company on the East Coast and collects 15,000 tons of textiles every year… amounting to 18 jobs for every 1000 tons.

“HELPSY’s environmental mission is to radically change the way people think about clothing reuse and recycling. In the process of serving this mission, it has created hundreds of living wage jobs, saved municipalities millions of dollars in disposal fees, and has reduced the enormous

environmental burden of the second most polluting industry in the world,” says Dan Green, Co-Founder and CEO of HELPSY.

Over the past year, HELPSY has worked with 113 municipal recycling departments and collected approximately 1.7 million pounds of textiles from those collaborations. Through a combination of clothing drives, home pick-ups, thrift store partners and clothing receptacles located in 10 states, HELPSY diverts nearly 30 million pounds of textiles from landfills every year. Considering those numbers, recycling clothes makes sense both environmentally and financially. Call To Artists: Ekphrastic and Back

BACCA (Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts) invites poets and visual artists to participate in Ekphrastic and Back, a cross-media event in which poets and visual artists will use the opposite medium for inspiration.

The submission deadline is March 5, 2023 at 11:59 PM. There is no entry fee; submissions are free to all. The jurors are poet Christina M. Rau & Jason Jenkins. For complete entry information visit https://www.babylonarts. org/ekphrastic-and-back.

Ekphrasis means “Description” in Greek. An ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on

the “action” of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning. Poets and visual artists are encouraged to submit original work inspired by a piece of their choosing from the opposite medium:

• Poets are asked to choose a visual arts piece to inform/inspire their writing.

• Artists are asked to choose a poem or prose to inform/inspire their visual arts piece.

In lieu of a fee, poets and artists may make a suggested donation of $10 to BACCA, or they may become a BACCA member.

Ten poets and ten visual artists will be chosen to display their work, both poems and art pieces, for a one-night event on

Wednesday, March 22, 2023 from 7 PM to 10 PM in the BACCA Arts Center at 149 N. Wellwood Ave. Lindenhurst, NY. Poets will have the opportunity to read their poetry during the event. Additionally, one poet and one artist will be selected to create original pieces throughout the evening.

ROBERT MOSES CLUB PROMOTES REUSE, RENEW, RECYCLE - In the North Babylon School District, the Robert Moses Middle School EnvironmentalRecycling Club members spearheaded a project to recycle used sneakers. The club oversaw promoting the project, collecting the sneakers from the classes, counting the sneakers, and boxing up the sneakers to be given to Nike. Nike then grinds the sneakers down and turns them into different surfaces such as tracks, playgrounds, tennis courts and much more. The project at Robert Moses collected nearly 100 sneakers that would have otherwise gone into landfills. Since 1990, Nike’s program has collected more than 28 million shoes for recycling.
