Station Director John Mullen provided insight into how the station operated, what career opportunities there are in the broadcasting field and information about Hofstra’s programs. After the radio station visit, the Wilson Tech students toured the campus, had lunch in a dining hall and gained a sense of everyday activity on the college’s campus. Wilson Tech, a program of Western Suffolk BOCES, offers more than 30 career and technical education programs to high school juniors and seniors at its four campuses. Ninety-four percent (94%) of students who completed their Wilson Tech programs in 2015 reported they were attending college, active in the military or employed.

Students in the Audio Production program at Wilson Tech Dix Hills Campus recently enjoyed an opportunity to see their future in the field by visiting a working radio station and learning more about college educational opportunities. Marc Oppenheim, Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs, hosted the tour of the School of Communication for the Wilson Tech students and their instructors, Michael O’Toole and Lori Spano, and counselor Valerie Lambert. They were joined by Juliana Spano, Lori’s daughter, who is currently attending Hofstra. The tour included a look at media classrooms and new facilities in the School of Communication. A highlight of the visit was a close-up look at WHRU, the campus radio station.

5 Tips to Make an Older Home More Energy Efficient While new homes are being built to be more energy efficient than ever before, thanks to a growing green building movement and increasingly strict building codes, the age of existing dwellings continues to present challenges. More than 40 percent of the housing stock in the United States was built before 1969 and simply wouldn’t stand up to today’s standards. Yet, much can be done to help homeowners improve their building envelope to reduce energy use and increase efficiency.

1. Seal cracks and gaps around your home’s windows, doors and vents. These can be a considerable source of energy loss, allowing conditioned air to escape and unconditioned air to infiltrate your home, placing stress on your furnace and air conditioner in the process. Employ Simple Fire Prevention Measures to Maximize Safety Did you know that, according to the National Fire Protection Association, most people have a false sense of security regarding house fires, believing that they would have approximately six minutes to evacuate their home in the event of a fire? In reality, smoke and fire spread rapidly and can overcome occupants in less than three minutes. When a fire occurs, there’s no question that time is critical. The good news is there are several important steps you can take to maximize your escape time. With the following

measures in place, you’ll create critical protection for what matters most - your home and family. 1. Install smoke alarms. You should have one in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. For the best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound. 2. Inspect and clean smoke alarms monthly. Replace batteries in spring and fall. To clean the alarm, open the cover

and gently vacuum the interior. 3. Prepare and practice a fire escape plan. Draw a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of every room - especially sleeping areas. Discuss the escape routes with every member of your household, and agree on a meeting place outside your home in case of emergency. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. 4. Select building materials that provide passive fire protection. Passive fire protection is part of the core of the building and helps control fire by limiting its spread.

One very effective form of passive fire protection is the installation of insulation. When adding or upgrading insulation, look for products made from naturally fire-resistant, inorganic materials. A favorite among builders, contractors and homeowners is a stone wool insulation called Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound, which offers fire resistance up to 2,150°F. Its melting point is higher than the temperature of a typical house fire, which means it will stay in place longer to provide passive fire protection when every second counts, allowing more time for safe evacuation and for first responders to arrive.

Top Volunteer Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Middle Level State Honoree: Victoria Bonavita Nominated by Robert Moses Middle School in West Babylon Victoria, an eighthgrader at Robert Moses Middle School, has shared her love of animals with hundreds of thousands of people through oral presentations, homemade videos and articles in online publications. When Victoria was little, her grandfather introduced her to pigeons and chickens. “Since then, I’ve always been interested in animals and in helping to teach others about them,” she said. She began by bringing her chickens and pigeons to school one day and making a presentation about them to the entire fifth grade. Since then, she has educated people about birds and other animals

through talks at schools, libraries, nature and senior centers, and other venues in New York and other states. She also has created 22 educational videos for her own YouTube channel called “Victoria’s Amazing World,” many of which feature interviews with celebrities. In addition, Victoria writes articles for two online papers. “It requires a lot of work, but I’ve been able to reach and educate nearly a million people,” conveying important information about animal protection, adoption, and rehabilitation, she said. Victoria’s efforts were recently recognized when she was invited to speak at her state capital on Animal Advocacy Day. Amazing Academics The North Babylon Academic Team competed and placed in the Long Island Winter History Bowl and Bee Tournament held at Lynbrook High School. The team, comprised of captain Haggai Anglade, Ryan Arranz, Emily Guerrara, Elipida Manolas, Noah Rothstein, KeiAra

Salomon and Melissa Winter, went against the top Long Island Quiz Bowl teams and earned first-place overall in the History Bowl. In addition, Anglade earned first place in the individual History Bee and Rothstein earned first place in the individual Geography Bee.

Such accomplishments have made the North Babylon Academic Team one of the top competitive Quiz Bowl teams in the United States; the team is ranked in the top 50 nationally, and in the top three in New York state.

As State Honorees, Ariana and Victoria each will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an allexpense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C., where they will join the top two honorees from each of the other states and the District of Columbia for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, 10 students will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2017. that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

Snow Days & Days Gone By “Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

The designated agent form in some instances is the most important piece of paperwork in the funeral process. This form is meant to be filled out before a person has passed away. It designates one person who will take care of the funeral arrangements above all others. Most people are of the belief that the health care proxy or the power of attorney is in place to take care of situations like this. This is a common misconception. The power of attorney and health care proxy are null and void when the deceased person has died. If there is no one who has been designated, then the person who has the right to make funeral arrangements would pass to the next of kin and if there are multiple children the rights are evenly distributed to all children. The designated agent form resolves this issue by identifying one person (kin or not) to take care of the arrangements. This is most helpful in situations concerning cremation, where a person dies locally and has multiple children who are living across the country. In arrangements such as cremation, signatures are needed from all children before we can start the process. Without the designated agent in place, if one person were to object to the cremation, the cremation cannot be done. However if there were a designated agent form in place, there is only one signature needed and all others are non-consequential to the arrangement process. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

More than 100 representatives from public schools and community groups took part in the fifth annual Healthier Long Island Challenge conference at Western Suffolk BOCES December 8th, which focused on fostering a culture of wellness in schools. Collaborating on the event were Western Suffolk BOCES Creating Healthy Schools and Communities program, Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK), Adelphi University, Alliance for a Healthier Generation, American

Dairy Association North East and SPORTIME. The conference featured expert speakers in health and early education. Presenters and presentation topics included: Lisa Perry, National Advisor, Alliance for a Healthier Generation, “Creating and Communicating a Culture of Smart Snacking, Active Students, Staff and Families;” Dr. Dana Friedman, Deputy Commissioner, Suffolk County Dept. of Social Services, “Making the Connection between

Health, Early Learning and School Readiness;” and Dr. Paul Rukavina, Associate Professor, Adelphi University, “Fostering a Culture of ‘Movers.’” Angelique Johnson-Dingle, Western Suffolk BOCES District Superintendent, welcomed attendees and New York State Assemblywoman Kim Jean-Pierre delivered opening remarks. In addition to the featured speakers, three Ted Talk-style presentations offered strategies, tools and best practices to assist schools with nutrition and

school gardening, active living, wellness resources and funding. multicomponent evidence-based policies, place-based strategies, and promising practices to increase demand for and access to healthy, affordable foods and opportunities for daily physical activity for all New Yorkers. Western Suffolk BOCES Student Support Services Center (SSSC) is one of the 25 grantees and is collaborating with Sustainable Long Island and Stony Brook Medicine on this initiative.
