WELCOMING CHINESE NEW YEAR - Students at Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District celebrated Chinese New Year – the Year of the Rat – during their library classes with librarian Andrea Francisco. The students welcomed in the new year by reading Chinese folktales, fairytales and tall tales. Using their Chromebooks to research China, students learned about the Chinese culture. The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! Students Roll Forward With Successful Short Film
Babylon Memorial Grade School Students Host Virtual Interview
On Jan. 22, fifth graders in Amy Malone, Debbie Gandiello, and Nicole Cupo’s ELA class at Babylon Memorial Grade School honed their journalistic skills through a unique interactive activity. As part of their unit on feature writing, the students conducted a Skype interview of Nicole Ficarra, who became a quadriplegic at 4 years old as a result of a bad car
accident. Prior to the interview, the fifth graders conducted internet research on spinal cord injuries to gain background knowledge. They then prepared questions on a variety of topics related to Ficarra’s experiences and adapted lifestyle. During the interview, students took turns asking their questions and diligently recorded Ficarra’s
responses so they could later incorporate them into two collaborative feature articles. This lesson not only taught the students how to conduct and synthesize research like true journalists, but also to have empathy for those who are differently abled and to maintain a positive attitude like Ficarra.
North Babylon High School students in Mrs. Nicole Raymond’s advanced film class entered into the 72 Hour Film Competition at Five Towns College in November 2019. The team was assigned to the horror genre and had to write the script, complete filming and edits STUDENTS HOST VIRTUAL INTERVIEW WITH INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER within 72 hours. After assigning jobs - Fifth graders at Babylon Memorial Grade School were all smiles after a job well done brainstorming interviewing quadriplegic Nicole Ficarra via Skype. students wrote the script titled “ANYTHING” and gathered costumes, props, and volunteer extras for filming. During the screening and judging ceremonies, the group was nominated for six of the 12 awards, including Best Use of Genre, Best Use of Prop, Best Use of Character, Best Acting, Best Editing and Best Overall. The short film won Best Use of Genre
and Sophia Bonventre won for Best Acting. They will be attending the Hofstra Film Festival on Feb. 29 and the St. John the Baptist Film Festival on April 29. The district congratulates all participating students on this impressive accomplishment and wishes them luck for the upcoming festivals.

Students Succeed At Regional Competitions Students in the business department at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently showed off their knowledge and skills at two regional competitions. On Jan. 8, 100 members of the school’s chapter of DECA participated in the Suffolk County Regional DECA Competition, which challenged the students

Erin Corcoran placed first and Meghan Nachemin placed third in the Hotel & Lodging Management event; Kate Hannon placed first and Allie Van Rossem placed second in the Quick Serve Restaurant event; Kiera Mroczka placed second in Principles of Marketing; and Kevin Mroczka and KJ Graham placed third in the Marketing Management team event. There were also several fourth- and fifth-place winners from Babylon. The next step in the DECA journey is the NYS DECA Career Competition, which will be
held from Feb. 26 to Feb. 28 in Rochester. The following day on Jan. 9, the high school’s Virtual Enterprise class participated in the Long Island Business Plan Competition at Virtual Enterprises International’s 2020 Long Island Conference & Exhibition. Virtual Enterprise is designed to equip students with in-demand business skills, teach them entrepreneurship and guide them toward fulfilling careers. At the competition, Babylon students presented and explained a business plan in front of corporate judges and marketed their “products” to VE classes from other schools.
