Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Winter 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule.

Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM HEADING TO STATES - On Jan. 27, West Babylon Science Olympiad’s three teams competed at the annual Regional Science Olympiad Tournament. Suffolk County’s regional tournament is comprised of 60 teams from throughout the county. The tournament is the largest in New York and the nation.

Each team competed in 23 events, from rubber-band powered airplanes to solving crimes in forensics. To qualify for the state competition, schools must finish in the top eight out of 60 teams. The top six schools receive trophies. West Babylon earned medals in 17 of the 23 categories, amounting to 21 medals between the three teams. RESIDENTS TURNING 65 SHOULD APPLY FOR PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly, pictured right, discusses the many benefits seniors are entitled to at a recent “Legislator at Your Library” event at the North Babylon Library. Legislator Donnelly urges residents who are 65 or are turning 65 in 2024 to apply for the Senior Property Tax Exemption before the March 1 deadline.

If you were born in 1959 and turning 65 this year, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) would like to wish you a happy birthday and remind you to file your property tax exemption forms before March 1, regardless of your month and date of birth.

This 65th birthday milestone entitles eligible seniors to important benefits including the Enhanced STAR tax reduction and the Senior Citizens Property Tax Exemption. Depending on total income, the reduction could be significant. The adjusted gross income threshold for Enhanced STAR is $98,700 (for 2022) and the income threshold for the Senior Citizens

Property Tax Exemption is $58,400 gross (for 2022).

If you qualify, the two applications must be filed with your own Town Assessor on or before March 1 of the year you turn 65. Under New York State law, if you turn 65 after March 1 and wait until your birthday to file you will lose the next year’s exemption. In addition, if you were born prior to 1959 and think you are entitled to but not yet receiving STAR benefits, you also must apply before the March 1st deadline. The Enhanced STAR form is RP425-E and RP-425-IVP; the Senior Citizens Property Tax Exemption form is RP-467.
