students to write about someone in their community they consider a hero, and Yildiz submitted an essay about Christine Manzi, a fourth-grade teacher at Santapogue who is also chief of the West Babylon Fire Department.
As one of the contest winners, Yildiz was awarded a $50 gift card from TD Bank as well as a special visit to the school from Long Island Ducks mascot QuackerJack.

Representatives from the New York Islanders, along with mascot Sparky the Dragon, visited Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District on January 26th. The visit was centered on the importance of teamwork and how
working together, as either a class or a school, can accomplish more than doing it alone. To illustrate the concept, one student and one teacher had a race to dress in goalie equipment. The student had the assistance of his classmates, while the teacher tried to accomplish
the task solo. Students received folders and pencils from the New York Islanders and were also encouraged to register online for their “Blades for Grades” program, where earning good grades can score them two tickets to an Islanders game.

The Babylon Village Art Council featured artist for its Rotational Art Program at Astoria Bank is Remy Lexington, illustrator and writer. “I enjoy being a creative in every sense of the word,” he says. “I enjoy working with other artists and the wonderful vibes that collaboration produces. I will make art until the day I die. We all have an artistic fingerprint. I hope that you enjoy mine.” Remy loves all forms of art and likes to explore the many ways in which he can create. His subject matter ranges from violent, gory and gross to silly, cheesy and cute. An artist with a strong affinity towards shapes, simple composition and colors, he enjoys working in black and white as well. From his mind, creatures, characters and lovely little scenes are created with pen, pencil, paint
film “Turn.” His paintings have been a part of Big Snow’s Monster Jammin’ Party gallery. In addition, some of his designs were in SunChoke’s Seasonal Art Show Magazine. During February, his work will be on display at Astoria Bank, located at 180 Main Street in Babylon Village.

Babylon School District students performed exceptionally well at the 2016 Suffolk County Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) Regional Competition at Suffolk County Community College on January 6th. First-place winners
were Maggie Higgins in Visual Advertising, Michael Logan and Jack Corcoran in Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making, and Carley Daniele in Broadcast Advertising. Babylon DECA students competed against more than 4,000 high school students from throughout
Art for Elders Suffolk County. Babylon DECA students continue to apply the concepts learned in their business classes in their DECA events. Teachers Andrew Marulis and Claire Reilly are the co-advisors of the Babylon chapter of this national organization.
Students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in the North Babylon School District visited the Spangle Drive Senior Center in North Babylon with art teacher Lisa Gregorek to create artwork
and present it to senior citizens. Using their imagination, the students drew winter scenes on blue construction paper with pencils and pastel colors. The activity was not

Paving the Way
Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently served as the community reader in Ms. Caffey’s first grade class at Forest Avenue Elementary School. McCaffrey was appropriately assigned to read Snow Day! by Lester L. Laminack, as the class was anticipating the first major snowfall of the year predicted to begin the following day. The Community Reader program brings in guest readers from the greater Babylon area in order to promote the importance and joy of reading. The program also provides young students a chance to meet local leaders and learn
about what they do for the community. For example, McCaffrey explained to the attentive class how he helps people in Suffolk County by listening to their concerns and passing laws if necessary. “These kids were really bright and truly interested in learning what local elected officials do in the community,” said McCaffrey. “However, I believe they were even more interested in listening to me read the book selection. This is a positive program and it is just so much fun for all involved.” McCaffrey has had the honor of being a reader at

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

For over 25 years we have advocated, if at all possible, that people make funeral arrangements in advance of their need. Making funeral arrangements at the time of need is one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do. You have a limited time to make emotional decisions, economic decisions, and personal decisions that may affect you and your family well into the future. “Necessity”, or limited time to make decisions as Ben Franklin says, never made for a good bargain - meaning that you make economic decision that will cost more than you would if you had more time to contemplate the cost of a funeral including cemetery, cremation, caskets, etc. This saying may well refer to emotional decisions as well as personal decisions. Making emotional decisions under undue stress and strain may skew your thinking thus offending someone unintentionally or making the funeral unnecessarily difficult for you and your family because of interference from someone outside your immediate family. In legal terms, if someone else forces you to make a decision such as this, it is called duress and the decision can be rendered null and void, but if you make such a decision on your own, unfortunately, you will have to live with it. Pre-need funeral arrangements allow individuals and families to examine their options, and the opportunity to discuss with each other the type of funeral they want for each other. Although you can pay for a funeral in advance if you desire, you do not need to pay for a funeral to have the type of funeral you wish on record. Simply give us a call and we can discuss your options over the phone, or you and members of your family can come into the funeral home and we will gladly explain all your options. We can show you caskets and discuss costs with you so that you will be prepared. Our funeral directors are always prepared to help you. You need to be prepared to deal with funeral directors. Take our word for it - it is better to deal with them in advance before the “Necessity” than it is to deal with them under emotional and personal strain.

Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs
say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly.
