Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly Sworn Into Fourth Term Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park), elected by the residents of the newly drawn 17th Legislative District in November 2023, was sworn into his fourth term in the County Legislature at the 2024 Legislative Organizational Meeting, held January 2 at the William J. Lindsay County Complex in Hauppauge.

Legislator Donnelly, a graduate of Deer Park High School, is a proud life-long resident in Deer Park. He now represents residents from the Towns of Babylon, Huntington and Islip, including parts of Baywood, Deer Park, Dix Hills, Huntington, Melville, North Babylon, North Bay Shore and South Huntington.

A four-decade Deer Park Fire Department volunteer, Legislator Donnelly served as a Town of Babylon Councilman from 2011

“I am humbled and honored that the residents of the 17th Legislative District have again put their faith in me, trusting me to serve

another two-year term,” said Legislator Donnelly.

“I remain dedicated to our community, a place I have called home for my entire life, and look forward to

continuing to represent all of our neighbors as their voice in local government.”

With his first responder background and commitment to keeping public safety a priority, Legislator Donnelly is pleased to have been reappointed by returning Legislative Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey to the Public Safety Committee which has jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to law-enforcement related business or activities, including the Police Department, the Sheriff’s Department, the County’s correctional facilities and the medical examiner.

Legislator Donnelly was also reappointed as a member of the Fire, Rescue, EMS & Emergency Preparedness and Ways & Means Committees and will additionaly serve on the Seniors & Human Services

Committees.

“From my first day in office, I have been focused on protecting the residents of Suffolk County and they have my commitment that I will continue to use my position on Public Safety to prioritize and advance these goals,” Legislator Donnelly added. “I also look forward to serve on the other committees to which I have been appointed.”

The 17th Legislative district office remains at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station and provides free notary services during regular office hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The office will re-locate to Deer Park later this year, in accordance with new legislative boundaries.

Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s virtual enterprise students received hands-on business experience at the Virtual Enterprises Long Island Business Plan Competition

and Trade Show held on January 11 at Long Island University.

Twenty-five Babylon students attended this annual conference, which gave them the opportunity

to compete in a variety of business-related categories including sales materials, booth design, sales pitch and website design. The students also pitched their business plan, which

included an executive summary of their firm— Attire Wire—to a panel of judges. In all, the students made over $75,000 in virtual sales to other firms in attendance at the

conference.

The experience gave them the opportunity to network with other Long Island virtual enterprise students, virtual enterprise adult supervisors and LIU

professors and staff. It was a valuable opportunity for the Babylon students to learn first-hand about the ins-and-outs of business deals and networking in a simulated setting.

Babylon Schools Honor Local Heroes provide social-emotional, financial and food support for community members who may be facing a crisis. They do this through fundraising, food collections, community mobilization and also spending time with those who might be ailing.

Hospitals Intensify Flu Prevention Efforts

Flu Shots And Surgical Facemasks Part Of Effort To Stem Flu Flu virus was declared prevalent by the New York State Health Commissioner on December 6, 2023, and hospitals on Long Island and throughout the Hudson Valley are taking additional steps to prevent the spread of flu, including enhanced efforts to vaccinate all employees and distribution of surgical facemasks. Worn by employees, masks offer a physical barrier to flu transmission. This is a comprehensive endeavor to protect patients,

visitors, and employees from exposure to the flu virus.

A declaration of flu prevalence by the health commissioner triggers the public health law that was put in place by the state in 2014. Employees of hospitals and residential healthcare facilities and agencies who are not vaccinated against the flu are required to wear a mask while in areas where patients or residents are typically present.

While an annual flu vaccine remains the

single best method for preventing the flu, a surgical facemask, worn by employees, provides added protection to patients, employees, and visitors. All hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley offer the flu vaccine to all employees and also provide employees with surgical facemasks, as required

by New York State public health law.

As a matter of standard practice, all Long Island and Hudson Valley hospitals enforce

universally recognized precautions to prevent the flu. These include hand washing, the use of hand sanitizers placed conveniently throughout the hospital, as well as goggles and gowns.

In addition, all hospitals adhere to rigorous infection control guidelines and policies every day to ensure a clean environment for patients, staff, and visitors. These practices are especially important during flu season.

Antiseptic wipes are

located in patient rooms, workstations, hallways, and other treatment areas and are easily accessible to hospital employees responsible for sanitizing medical equipment and surface areas.

“Flu prevention is a priority at all hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley. Hospital employees work every day to lessen the spread of flu virus by adhering to strict infection control practices and prevention guidelines,” said Wendy Darwell, president/CEO

of the Suburban Hospital Alliance of New York State, the organization that represents hospitals in the nine counties east and north of New York City. “Hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities must also document the number and percentage of personnel vaccinated against the flu to state and federal authorities.”

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Winter 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule.

Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of

A Brief History Of American Football Almost two-thirds of adults in the United States say they currently watch National Football League games.

But American football is no longer relegated to the boundaries of the United States, as it is becoming a global sport. According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 80 countries with organized federations governing the game. Plus, thousands of youth and adult leagues exist all over the world.

Even though soccer has long been a global sport, it seems the other kind of “football” is quickly catching up.

The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) and rugby. During the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted

from the London Football Association. Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, and McGill University.

Rugby-type rules became preferential among players and spectators.

Walter Camp, known affectionately as the “Father of American Football,” transformed the rugby-style game into the one that resembles American football today.

Camp brought two key innovations to the game.

The opening “scrummage” was eliminated, and a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down the field a specific yardage. Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage, and the scoring scale used in football today.

Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury.

Roosevelt stepped in to ask collegiate teams to revise regulations to make the game less brutal. The committee overseeing the rules would later become known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Thanks largely in part to the popularity of college football, professional

football began to gain traction with the public.

The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. That league would later become the National Football League. The first televised NFL game occurred in 1939. Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode.

Cheerleaders were introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad. Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and

the Green Bay Packers.

Football games typically last around 3 hours. The average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators.

American football has become a multibilliondollar industry.

What developed on college campuses has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.

ENRICHING LITERACY LESSONS - During the past two years, West Babylon Senior High School’s English department has been focused on enriching students’ literacy through the joy of independent reading. According to the Next Generation Learning Standards, “independent reading is an essential part of English Language Arts and Literacy instruction; two of the lifelong practices of readers highlight the importance of independent reading, as we develop students’ ability to self-select texts based on interest and read for multiple purposes, including for learning and for pleasure.” Through a variety of choices – from print to electronic, literature-based to nonfiction and myriad activities and projects – students are recognizing that literacy is not just an essential part of learning, but of life as well.
