The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org
Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family
Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Fifth grade students enrolled in Lisa Necroto’s class at Babylon Memorial Grade School recently enhanced their knowledge in the realm of aquaponics with assistance from STEAM instructor Emily Moran. During their time spent in the classroom, the students were able to carefully experiment with the water samples, testing for specifics such as pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, salinity and water temperature. In turn, these tests assisted with determining the health of the ecosystem from which the water came from, which included Hempstead Lake, Northport Bay and Hawley’s Lake. The district would like to thank Adelphi University’s biology department chairperson Dr. Andrea Ward, along with research

Williams Named Top Female Author for her very successful book, “A Collection of Poems: A Journey Through Life,” which she published in December 2018. With 60 poems featured in the book, Mrs. Williams submitted her poem “Web of Deceit” for the contest. She was chosen from a pool of hundreds of contestants by a panel of judges. While dealing with life’s struggles as a child, Mrs. Williams said that writing and music were tools that brought her fulfillment and healing. She wanted to use her poetry skills to share her story and potentially help others. “I chose a poem format where each poem addresses
different struggles in life and different ways that you can cope to overcome the struggles that you face,” she said. When she was awarded Top Female Author, Mrs. Williams said she was shocked but excited. She hopes the award will draw more attention to her book so that it can help more people dealing with hardship. Mrs. Williams has been a North Babylon resident since 2006 and came to work for the district in 2016 before taking a permanent position at Belmont in 2017.
