On January 9th, the Town of Babylon History Museum unveiled a new exhibit Our Veterans Brave and Noble: honoring the Town of Babylon’s citizen soldiers, which pays tribute to the local men and women who have valiantly served our country. The display includes a selection of military uniforms and memorabilia

from many of the major military conflicts in which our veterans have served, along with photographs and information about veterans’ organizations, monuments and memorial buildings within the Town of Babylon Town of Babylon History Museum is located at 47 West Main Street in Babylon (631.587.3750).

Museum hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the first and third Saturday of each month (October to May). The museum is free. Visitors may view photographs and interactive exhibits about town history, and tour the jail cells of the former Town of Babylon Police Department.

Winter Concert Performance

Musicians from Babylon Grade School had the opportunity to perform in front of their friends, family, teachers and classmates this month in a dazzling series of winter concerts held both in the grade school gymnasium and Babylon High School’s Rowe Hall auditorium. Performances were made by Colleen Angerami’s

third- and fourth-grade chorus, Paul Grisafi’s orchestra and Don Meier’s cadet band. The festivities kicked off on the morning of January 17th, as the young musicians performed for their classmates and grade school faculty in the school gymnasium. Family members enjoyed the students’ second performance of

the day later that evening at Rowe Hall. Among the many highlights was the cadet band making their very first performance in front of a live audience, playing each of their three songs twice through to get the full enjoyment from the experience. Photo courtesy of: Eric Holden, Syntax

iPad Scavenger Hunt

Babylon elementary students learned how to use iPads and QR codes during a recent Gingerbread Man Scavenger Hunt at the elementary school. After comparing versions of the Gingerbread Man in their classrooms, Babylon Elementary media specialist Lisa Ann Lindeman shared with the students Laura Murray’s “The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School.” As a culminating event, Babylon Elementary art teacher Patricia Stork joined Lindeman and the students for a technology scavenger hunt throughout the school. Students used iPads to scan

QR codes in the building to receive clues as to where the Gingerbread Man was hiding in the school. At each stop, they tried different types of iPad activities. Their adventure included using an app and stylus to color a Gingerbread Man, viewing a video book trailer, listening to an e-reader version of the Gingerbread Man narrated by a special guest and watching an animated movie created by Stork featuring the Gingerbread Man in the elementary school computer lab. “They even received a humorous message from the famous character himself,”

Babylon Public Library

Lindeman said. “Our firstgraders loved the story. It was a sweet time for everyone!” iPads inspire creativity and hands-on learning with features that include key components for students to become true 21st century learners. The tablets are expanding the learning experience both inside and outside of the classroom, as they provide interactive lessons, study aids and productivity tools. The Babylon School District is pleased that its students have the opportunity to study and learn using these devices.

The Babylon Public Library will present the following events: Weather Extremes & Your Health Wednesday, January 30th, from 7 to 8 p.m. Learn the effects and influences of the weather on your health and what you can do to minimize them. *** Pleasures Of Tea Tuesday, February 5th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Featuring a history of tea, various varieties available and their health benefits. *** Learn To Knit: Teddy Bear Wednesday, February 6th, 13th and 20th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Knit a teddy bear using two basic stitches. Babylon elementary students held a book fair this month at Bay Shore’s Barnes & Noble to raise money for Babylon families affected by Hurricane Sandy. The students helped raise close to $600, and Barnes & Noble chipped in with a generous donation of books that Babylon Elementary Principal Dana Basile said values over $1,000. “The community and students were asked to stop by to see teachers and friends sharing stories and more,” Babylon elementary art teacher Patricia Stork said of the event. “Kindergarten and first-grade students came and sang songs, did writer’s workshop plays and even sang a math rap song. It was a night of fun for all.” Art Honor Society students from Babylon High School lent a helping hand as well, as they held

a face-painting station and gave the younger students drawing lessons in a special workshop. Teachers and aides from the elementary school also volunteered their time to help with giftwrapping.

How To Help Guests Save On Travel

Because traveling to a wedding can be such a costly expenditure, many couples look for ways to alleviate some of the financial pressure that this travel places on their guests. The following are a few ways couples can do just that.

Your Spectacular Waterfront Wedding

* Find an airport-friendly wedding destination. Couples who can get married within a short distance of a major airport can save their guests a significant amount of money. A major airport has more flights, and that can translate to more options and more affordable flights for your guests. In addition, a wedding destination that is close to an airport reduces the chance that guests will have to pay for rental cars. A cab ride to the hotel might be less expensive than a rental car, which guests may not need aside from getting to and from the airport.

Come visit “The best kept secret on Long Island”. Where we make the dream of your waterfront wedding come true!

* Inquire about group airline rates. Couples know to negotiate group hotel rates for their wedding guests, but few may know it’s possible to negotiate group airline rates as well. If a large number of your wedding guests will be traveling from the same city, contact the major airlines to see if they offer group travel discounts. Many airlines do, so comparison shop to find your guests the best deal.

AT MASSAPEQUA

Weddings are typically expensive affairs. Couples may be willing to go the extra mile and stretch their finances for their big day, but what about their guests? Couples ask much of their out-of-town wedding guests, who must arrange for travel and lodging and possibly even childcare if they are bringing young children.

* Consider a longer engagement. A longer engagement can save your guests money on travel. Couples who choose to have a longer engagement and send savethe-date cards out early are giving their guests more time to book flights and find deals. Flights tend to be less expensive when booked well in advance, so a longer engagement gives guests more time to find a flight that’s affordable. In addition, travelers who can book early often get the first crack at the best flight times, saving themselves the nuisance of taking a red-eye flight or traveling early in the morning.

Tips For Selecting Wedding Day Flowers What would a wedding day be without flowers? The beauty and the aroma of fresh-cut flowers can create a welcoming atmosphere and complement the beauty and the style of a wedding wardrobe. Flowers are often the first things that guests see upon arriving for the ceremony, and they may even be something guests take home at the end of the night. Flowers create an air of romance, and most couples want to make flowers -- whether fresh or silk -- an integral part of their wedding day. As with any decision when planning a wedding, choosing the right flowers requires some research and a basic knowledge of which flowers will convey the message and the theme of your wedding. The number of colors, textures and combinations that can be created are so numerous that couples may feel the decision on the floral arrangements is best left to the florist. But it doesn’t take a lot of expertise to know what you want, and it is important for couples to convey their feelings to the florist. Consider these tips when choosing a florist and selecting flowers. * Experts advise that a couple start looking for a florist at least six months before the wedding, especially if the wedding will take place during the peak season of May through September. Get recommendations from friends as to which florist they used or find out if your wedding planner or banquet hall manager recommends a particular florist. Some catering halls have agreements with florists, and they work together. * Browse magazines to get ideas of what you like. You also may be able to find a florist

through an advertisement or if he or she has been featured in publications. Keep a scrapbook of the colors, types of flowers and arrangements and any other ideas that attract you so you will be able to present this information to the florist. * Establish your flower budget prior to sitting down with the florist. You should expect to pay at least 8 percent of the total wedding cost on flowers. Get an estimate on the floral arrangement and then tweak your needs according to your budget. Many florists can modify arrangements and find a middle ground with regard to cost. Selecting flowers that are in-season will result in more affordable rates than if you desire exotic or out-of-season blooms. * Once you’ve hired the florist, you can come up with a wedding flower worksheet that establishes all of your needs. The florist may ask for specific information, such as photos of the bride’s gown as well as the colors and styles that the wedding party will be wearing. A good florist knows that a bouquet should not overpower or detract from the beauty of the bride. The florist may want to mimic textures from the dress, such as beading, with smaller flowers or berries within the arrangement. The groom’s boutonniere is traditionally one of the flowers from the bride’s

bouquet so that the look is cohesive. * Ceremony flowers may be traditional, and some houses of worship have strict guidelines as to what can and cannot be used. However, reception flowers can be where you show off your creativity and whimsy. After all, this is a party and it should be fun. You may want to give the florist more freedom of expression with regard to reception centerpieces and flowers that adorn other areas of the room. * Because receptions tend to take place in the evening hours and are often indoor affairs, experts say that added lighting may be needed to put emphasis on the floral centerpieces and help present them in their best light. You may want to think about hiring a lighting designer to spotlight some areas of the room or at the very least incorporate candlelight into your centerpiece arrangements. * To give the impression that there are more flowers than there really are, use fragrance and filler as your tools. Fragrant flowers can fill up the room with a welcoming aroma. Look for frangipani, lilies, hyacinths, jasmine, and sweet peas for a big impact. Florists know how to stretch arrangements by using greenery and other filler to lend bulk without too much extra cost. *Experienced florists will know how long it takes certain buds to open and show off their maximum beauty. Therefore, expect a florist to be working on your floral arrangements as much as a week before the wedding date -- purchasing containers, cleaning flowers and waiting for certain ones to open fully. Minimize changes close to your wedding date as most things will already be started. * It is possible to make your own centerpieces or bouquets if you so desire. Simplicity will work best for the novice. Think about grouping similar-hued calla lilies together for a bridal bouquet. Hydrangea and peonies are larger flowers that can easily fill up a vessel on a table as a centerpiece. White flowers will coordinate with any color scheme and could be the easiest to mix and match. White blooms include sweet pea, rose, camellia, stephanotis, narcissus, gardenia, orchid, lily of the valley, jasmine, and gypsophila. Flowers are one component of the wedding that will help achieve the magic and beautiful atmosphere couples desire.

Best Man & Maid Of Honor Roles

Being chosen as a best man or a maid of honor is a significant and meaningful honor. Those roles have evolved over the years, but these special participants must still perform some of the traditional duties of the past, including serving as the official witnesses to the ceremony. The following is a rundown of the various duties maids of honor and best men are now expected to handle once they’re chosen for these distinguished honors.

Prior To The Wedding Before the wedding takes place, the maid of honor will closely assist the brideto-be with many of the important decisions related to the look and the feel of the wedding. She typically accompanies the bride to dress shops to select gowns for the bride and bridesmaids. Much in the same manner, the best man will assist

the groom-to-be with choosing tuxedoes or suits and also with coordinating with the ushers to ensure they know when to go for fittings. Although the best man will serve as a sounding board for the groom, traditionally the bride and her bridesmaids have taken on the majority of the wedding planning, so the maid of honor can expect to play a larger role than the best man. The maid of honor may be asked to delegate certain assignments, such as helping to find wedding vendors or addressing invitations. She may go with the bride for makeup and hairstyle trials. Together with the bridesmaids, she will plan a bridal shower party and a bachelorette excursion. She may select a wedding gift for the couple and present it on behalf of all the wedding attendants. The best man will coordinate the

Be Open To Ideas And Expertise Once you announce your plans to get married, there’s a good chance that people close to you will be ready and willing to dispense their share of advice. Some words of wisdom will be priceless, while others you can store away for another day. When polling married couples, you will likely find they would change “this” or “that” about their weddings if given the chance to do it all over again. Here is some advice that you can choose to follow for your wedding day. Tip #1: Trust your vendors Couples often have unique ideas for their wedding day. It may seem tempting to spell out what you want in minute detail and insist on wedding vendors carrying out your wishes to a T. But the smarter idea may be to give vendors a little more free reign -- after all, they are the professionals.

relationship or the life you will be building together? “If Ihad to do it all again, I would skip the dessert bar I had at my wedding,” says Alice C., Ohio. “The spread of pies, pastries, cookies, and chocolates certainly looked impressive, but it cost me a small fortune. Also, people filled up on the dessert bar so much, they no longer had room to taste my specialordered wedding cake.” Tip #3: Don’t overextend Your wedding will hopefully be a once-in-a-lifetime event. Therefore, couples often plan to spend a good deal of money to ensure their special day is perfect. Weddings are still viewed as a high-priority

expense and most couples save for a long period of time despite sluggish consumer spending reports. According to the market research and analysis firm IBISWorld, nearly 60 percent of couples go over their budgets when getting married. Some do so at the risk of being in debt afterward. “It can be easy to get carried away in wedding spending,” shares Deirdre H., Michigan. “I went way over budget when getting my wedding gown and a few other components of my wedding. My husband and I struggled the first year of our marriage trying to fix our finances and battling a bad case of moneyrelated stress.” Try to stick to a budget as much as possible so that you can enjoy yourself not only on the wedding day, but also long after the honeymoon has ended. Tip #4: Keep it in the family

“I had a vision in my head of what I wanted my centerpieces to look like,” offers Jean M., Connecticut. “I gave the florist my suggestions and the ‘feel’ of what I was trying to create, but ultimately Ileft the finished product up to her. When I walked into the reception hall and saw my centerpiece baskets overflowing with fall-hued flowers, berries and twinkling candles, I was so excited I had left it up to the expert.”

Selecting members of your wedding party can be challenging because there may be so many special people in your lives right now that you want to honor. Choosing a best man and a maid/matron of honor is a large responsibility because these people stand out in the wedding. Although couples struggle with their choices and want to please everyone, your safest bet is to choose a family member.

When deciding on particular aspects of the wedding, you can give your general ideas, but leave the finished product to the professionals. Don’t list every song you want the deejay to play or micromanage all of the poses the photographer should take. After all, experienced pros have likely done this dozens of times in the past and could produce results you never dreamed possible.

“I ended up choosing my best friend over my sister as maid of honor,” says Clara T., Arizona. “Although we were very close at the time, we’ve since grown apart due to work relocation. My sister and I, however, talk and hang out frequently. I regret not having asked my sister to be my maid of honor, considering hers is a friendship I know will last a long time.”

Tip #2: Scale down Unless you are planning on auditioning for the show “Over-the-Top Weddings,” it might pay to make your wedding more about being personal and less about wowing the crowd with special effects and expensive treats. It’s easy to be lured into extra dinner courses or be persuaded to release doves at the ceremony, but will these extras impact your

Unless you don’t have close family members or your relationship with your siblings or cousins is strained, choose a family member to serve as best man or maid of honor. It is easy to be overwhelmed when planning a wedding, and couples can expect to be bombarded with advice. However, it could pay to heed the advice of couples who have already lived and learned from their wedding choices.

Honeymoon How-To After the thrill of wedding festivities dies down, couples often jet off to a honeymoon retreat and begin an entirely different adventure. The honeymoon may create mixed feelings, some concerning the chance to spend time alone after months of planning and a few feelings of anxiety over spending the first night together as a married couple. For many couples, the honeymoon wedding night is the first time they are intimate together or it holds a special meaning of being intimate for the first time after being married. Such significance can put pressure on a happy and natural experience. Wedding jitters are normal, as are honeymoon and wedding night jitters.

But just as wedding trends have changed through the years, so, too, have beliefs about the wedding night. Knowing about shifting trends can alleviate some of the nervousness. According to a recent survey from Brides magazine, one in three brides plan to get into bed on the wedding night and ... sleep. After all of the hoopla of planning and enjoying the wedding, most people are exhausted. Others say they plan to stay up and relive moments of the day. Only about half of all couples think they will consummate the marriage on their wedding night. Taking the pressure off of the wedding night means that the rest of the honeymoon may be filled with opportunities to be amorous.

But couples may still be filled with expectations for the perfect romantic retreat. Here are some things to think about. Accept the fact that some wedding nights and honeymoons aren’t exactly what’s pictured in the movies. Don’t try to live up to a Hollywood-inspired ideal or you may be let down when things don’t go your way. In other words, it may rain on your beachside liaison. A wedding requires a lot of work. Many people find themselves to be physically exhausted afterward. Others find they are so wound up that they cannot relax. When the mind or body is on adrenaline overload or completely wiped out, it’s not the ideal situation for romantic endeavors.

Try to make the honeymoon stand apart from other nights by packing nice lingerie or nighttime attire so that the memories will be special. There will be plenty of other times down the road when you’re an old, married couple to hop between the sheets in a ratty college T-shirt. Pack some candles and mood music, or ask the resort to handle these details for you. These items can help set the scene. Make sure your packing list includes special toiletries and birth control methods if you’re not ready to start a family so soon after being married. The brands you prefer may be hard to acquire while at some honeymoon locations.

What to expect with a civil ceremony Many people dream of a wedding in a church or synagogue before dozens of family members and friends, while there are others who prefer to forgo the fanfare of a large wedding ceremony and are content with a civil wedding instead. Civil ceremonies are often a choice for couples who may have different religious beliefs or do not belong to a particular religious persuasion. In lieu of being presided over by a pastor, priest or rabbi, civil ceremonies are conducted by an authorized official, such as a judge or justice of the peace. The marriage also can be performed by a licensed wedding officiant. Depending on where a couple lives, mayors or even notary publics can solemnize a marriage. Pilots and ship captains also may be able to preside over the ceremony. Some states and provinces will allow anyone to solemnize a wedding, provided they have filed for a special permit for the day. In terms of location, the most basic

of civil ceremonies take place at the county courthouse, where paperwork is immediately filed. Ceremonies also occur at City Hall. Couples can choose to hire an officiant to go to another location to oversee the marriage ceremony. The latter is the more expensive option and will be based on the officiant’s schedule. The structure of a civil marriage is much more lax than those which follow the more traditional course. Rather than being required to wear a certain wardrobe or meet with the requirements of a particular church or other house of worship, couples often find flexibility with the civil route. Although some brides and grooms prefer to wear a tuxedo or suit and a wedding gown, it is not necessary to do so. There are many couples who have tied the knot in more casual clothing or even costumes. In order to participate in a civil ceremony, couples must secure a marriage license. This is usually obtained by a county registrar or another officer of records where the couple lives. Regulations will vary as to the time period in which the ceremony can be done after the mariage license is received. Some licenses may be voided if the couple does not tie the knot within a few days of securing the license. When the ceremony will take place is generally up to the couple and, if a member of the judiciary will be overseeing the wedding, the courthouse. Some courts require an appointment for the wedding, while others may have a walk-in policy. Determine these policies well in advance of the wedding day. There is often a fee collected for the wedding ceremony in addition to what was paid for the marriage license. For those hiring a private officiant, the fee

will be much higher than what a clerk of the court will cost. The couple will need to bring the marriage license and photo identification. Two witnesses also will need to be present with their own photographic identification. These witnesses will be needed to sign the marriage certificate. Because there is no firm tradition with civil ceremonies, couples may need to be more hands-on when it comes to executing the wedding. Here are some tips to consider. * An officiant may not organize the wedding, meaning it will be up to the couple to choose vows, arrange where people will stand, request any clerical blessings, or include any other special elements. * Some officiants enjoy presiding over weddings, while others see it as just a part of public duty. Couples can

try to find an officiant who meets with their approval and will keep with the tone that is expected of the ceremony. * For those adding personal vows, keep them brief and tailored to the occasion. * Know how many people can attend the ceremony in advance. Couples should recognize that space could be limited and restricted to only a few people if the wedding is taking place at the courthouse. * Arrange the venue for a party afterward. Couples may choose to record a video of the ceremony for playback at a reception to enable those who were not in attendance to be part of the special moment where the rings and vows were exchanged. Civil ceremonies are advantageous to those who have factors that may make a religious ceremony unfavorable.

Find a gown they all will love as A-line. Try to avoid gowns that are extremely form-fitting, as only a few of the bridesmaids may be able to pull off this look successfully. The remainder could be left feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable. Plus, form-fitting clothing will be restrictive and can be difficult to move around in -- particularly considering the gown will be worn for an entire day. Flattering Color As a bride you may have a colorscape in your mind for the wedding. But what looks good in table linens and flowers is not always the right choice for clothing. Take the skin tones and hair colors of your bridesmaids into consideration before choosing a dress. Green- and yellow-hued dresses may not look nice on women with olive skin tones, while very pale colors may wash out women with fair skin. Those with dark skin may need a brighter-colored dress. Price Tag It is an honor to be asked to be part of a bridal party, but that honor can be very expensive. The bridesmaids are expected to pay for their wardrobe, hair styling, and makeup, as well as parties and gifts for the happy couple. As a courtesy to the women who already will be investing a considerable amount to be

Close friends and family members are an important component of a couple’s wedding day. Individuals who are especially close to the bride and groom are often asked to become members of the wedding party, which means a bride-to-be will be asking one or more women to play an integral role in the celebration. To set these ladies apart from other guests at the wedding, they are often asked to wear coordinating bridesmaid gowns. Selecting a style and color that is fitting to the unique people of the bridal party can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. As if choosing your maid of honor wasn’t tricky enough, you now must make a host of other decisions as well, all while playing stylist to the wedding party. Fashion sense is as unique as a fingerprint, and it is unlikely the bridesmaids will be able to agree on every aspect of the gowns they will be asked to wear. However, there are ways to narrow down the choices and be as accommodating as possible to their needs. Size matters The body shapes and sizes of the women in your bridal party will be different, and this should be kept in mind when selecting a gown style and cut. There are certain dress shapes that are universally flattering, such

a part of your wedding, make every effort to select a gown that is affordable. There are plenty of retailers offering stylish options that may not be as expensive as some specialty stores. Other Tips Once you’ve decided on the basic elements, consider the following suggestions to find a gown that the bridal party will enjoy. * Take one or two bridesmaids shopping with you. Try to select ones with opposite body types so you can see how the gown looks on a woman who is thin and one who may be more full-figured. * Think about choosing separates. The bridesmaids can mix and match tops and bottoms to find a fit that works. This may enable a woman with a larger bust size to select a top with supportive straps while another bridesmaid can opt for strapless. Many stores have increased their inventory of separates because of

their growing popularity. * Choose one color and then let the bridesmaids choose the style they like the best for themselves. The look will still be cohesive, but it won’t be boring with one type of gown. Also, each bridesmaid will be comfortable with a gown that flatters her shape. * Go with a tea-length gown. These gowns have become quite trendy and are less formal and cumbersome than full-length gowns. Plus, there is a greater likelihood that the gown can be used again at a later date. * Purchase the bridesmaid gowns at the same store where you will be purchasing your wedding gown. Most shops will offer a courtesy discount if the bridesmaid gowns are purchased at the same store. Ensuring bridesmaids are happy in their gowns takes a little work but will be well worth the effort.

A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event for many couples, so brides and grooms wish for the event to be momentous and memorable. As such, couples are increasingly integrating personal nuances into their ceremonies and receptions to tailor weddings to their unique visions. The desire to include personalized wedding vows continues to be a popular trend. If you are considering personalized wedding vows, first realize that it may not be a simple task. That’s because you want the message conveyed to be dear to your heart, and that can be challenging when faced with the pressures and planning of the rest of the wedding. That isn’t to say that writing your own vows is impossible. Here are some guidelines for personalizing your ceremony with your own sentiments. In response to the ongoing hardships experienced by residents as a result of Hurricane Sandy, the Catholic Health Services (CHS) Caregivers Fund has made a donation to the parish of St. Joseph Church in Babylon. CHS President and Chief Executive Officer Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr., who also chairs the CHS Caregivers Fund, presented a check for $1,000 to St. Joseph’s pastor, Rev. Monsignor Christopher Heller. “It’s a relief and a joy to receive this check, which will begin to help so many people,” said Monsignor Heller, generally known as “Fr. Chris” to St. Joseph’s parishioners. “It’s a blessing for us and the people of Long Island.” “With so many Long Islanders struggling to recover from the devastation caused by Sandy, CHS staff wanted to help alleviate their distress in some way,” said Sullivan. “Funds

that would have been used to hold our annual Christmas party have been gladly donated to the CHS Caregivers Fund for this purpose. We hope our donation lifts the spirits of children and their families in this community who are suffering as the result of the storm. Together, we can ease their pain and share our best wishes for a brighter future.” Babylon was among the hardest hit Long Island communities, with severe flooding and enormous residential damage. More than 75 homes in the parish of St. Joseph were ravaged by the hurricane. The church became a sanctuary for many, serving first as a warming center, allowing people some respite and the ability to recharge their devices. Later, it housed donated supplies such as bottles of water, tools, crowbars, gloves and masks. Thanks to the generosity of neighbors, the parish’s

gym was completely filled with clothing from floor to ceiling. CHS contacted Catholic Charities for help in identifying five parishes that would receive $1,000 each to help purchase toys and other needed supplies for children. They included the Church of St. Christopher in Baldwin, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Inwood, the Church of the Sacred Heart in Island Park, St. Mary of the Isle, Long Beach; and Church of St. Joseph in Babylon. The generosity and kindness of CHS employees from across the system advance Christ’s healing mission near and far, through the CHS Caregivers Fund. With CHS donating all administrative costs, 100 percent of contributions go to recipients. Additionally, the system matches funds dollar for dollar, to maximize the impact.

Flashbacks & Fun Times By: Jamie Lynn Ryan You never know what you might find when cleaning out the closet. I recently came across a handful of those origami-type, square and triangle-folded notes that we all used to exchange like crazy back in middle school. I remember writing dozens upon dozens of them and slipping them through the vents of my friends’ lockers between classes, then excitedly waiting for them to write back so I would have my own “mail” to look forward to the next time I stopped at my own locker. How funny. It’s too bad I didn’t save them all, as I’m sure they would have made for some fascinating reading all these

years later. Notes full of class schedules, song lyrics, lists of boys we had crushes on…the usual pre-teen drama that seemed oh-soimportant at the time. We even developed our own language of sorts, with abbreviations and symbols that (so we thought) only we could comprehend. Such innocence. And then there were the “love” letters, those cute little poems surrounded by lots of hearts and x’s and o’s, and of course the requisite “A.A.F.” signifying the “always and forever” mentality that all 12 year-olds seem to have with regard to “love.” As corny as it all sounds now, there was definitely an underlying sweetness to those types of notes, a sense that somehow, with that

scrawled message of affection, everything was “official.” It’s a wonder, thinking back on it, how any of us managed to get any work done in between composing these little nuggets of wisdom – because you know they all had to be written during class time. After all, how else to make sure our friends were continuously updated on our comings and goings from the last 40 minute class! So many memories encapsulated by those little folded pieces of paper. A slice of life, preserved for all eternity on an 8-1/2 x 11-inch piece of loose-leaf paper. It doesn’t get any better than that. Can’t wait to see what other treasures my closet will uncover.

Your Pre-Need Funeral Experts Fully Provisioned for the Handicapped SHHHH, Mary, We Do Not Discuss This In Front Of The Children “For heaven sakes, John, the children are 50 years old.” replied Mary. So goes many conversations about preplanning funerals. To some parents it is worse than the discussion about the “birds and the bees” they had with their children 40 years ago.

Important Things to Remember for a Funeral: Pt. 3

Funeral homes are here to help you choose the right options for your funeral and individual budget. No funeral is ever too small or too large as long as you feel it is dignified. Some funeral items are required, some are not. There are a number of ways to handle the finances of a funeral and your funeral director can help you make the appropriate choice for your individual need. ASK QUESTIONS at any time during any and all parts of the arrangement, visitation, wake or funeral. The attention to detail is as important to you as it is to us. Letting your funeral home know there was a problem or that you would like to change something is the only way to get it done. We are a family and when you are here with us we want you to be able to talk to us about anything. We will always be here if you should have any questions. Just pick up the phone and call us or simply stop in and say hello. Proud to be family owned and operated serving the Lindenhurst Community and surrounding areas for 54 yrs.

16th, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Enjoy the memorable music of country legends. Required tickets are available. Each attendee may sign up three other attendees. *** Wii Bowling Thursday, February 21st, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Observe others and take turns participating in this virtual bowling game. There will be brief instruction and time for play. *** The Bessie Coleman Story Saturday, February 23rd, from 2 to 3 p.m. Terri Kirkland Banks, thespian and Artistic Director, will portray this inspiring story. *** Rock & Roll, Country, Doo-Wop & Pop Show Sunday, February 24th, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Join the Vic Vincent

ATTENTION

West Babylon Public Library

An open discussion with your children about your wishes after you pass away is a tremendous benefit to you and your children. A family discussion will avert the tragic situation that happened when Ted Williams died several months ago. My philosophy has always been, the funeral is more for the survivors than the deceased. I recently spoke to a woman who did not want her children to be bothered when she died. She wanted to pay for a direct cremation without any services for viewing and she did not want to discuss it with her children. She wanted to make sure that she would be cremated before her children could get here from out of state. I suggested she first discuss this matter with her children. She said it was only her decision. I then asked her what she would do if heaven forbid one of her children died and they were cremated before she could say good-bye. She simply said she would never talk to her daughter or sons-in-law again. She then looked at me, picked up her papers, put them in her pocketbook and said I will be back after I discuss this matter with my children. Some people do not ever wish to see the person after they die. They want to remember the person alive. Some people need the opportunity for closure and need to view their loved one before interment or cremation. Whatever your wishes are, I simply ask you discuss the matter with those who will suffer most after you are gone. Remember the funeral is more for them than it is for you. If you have any questions, please call us at any time. 250349N0130
