ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANUP AT TACKAPAUSHA PARK - New York State Senator Steve Rhoads recently rolled up his sleeves to lead a community cleanup at Tackapausha Museum and Preserve in Seaford, continuing his longstanding commitment to protecting Long Island’s environment and keeping local public spaces clean. Over the years, Senator Rhoads has organized and participated in numerous community cleanups throughout the 5th Senate District, bringing residents, volunteers, and community organizations together to make a hands-on difference. This latest effort brought together members of Senator Rhoads’ office, local volunteers, and Scouts, who collected 11 full bags of garbage from trails and public areas throughout the preserve.

When A Summer Storm Knocks Out The Power, What Will Your Insurance Actually Cover? Article provided by Ken Marcus and Mitchell Barber

A summer storm rolls across Long Island. The lights go out, the sump pump stops, a tree comes down and everything in the refrigerator begins its journey toward becoming a science experiment. Since it all happened during the storm, homeowners often assume their insurance will cover everything. Unfortunately, insurance usually does not work that way. The important question is not simply, “Did the power go out?” It is, “What caused the actual damage?” Food that spoils during an outage may be covered, but policies can have different limits, deductibles and requirements. Some may distinguish between a power failure originating on your property and a widespread utility outage. Before throwing everything

JOANN CILLA until next summer. These business owners aren’t thinking about pumpkin spice lattes and fall foliage; they’re thinking about maximizing the next 31 days. On the flip side, there are many business owners looking past Labor Day and straight at the November/ December holiday season. Retailers and other companies who earn much of their revenue in the last two months of the year are placing orders, locking in seasonal staff, and

planning their promotions so that when the calendar turns to fall, they’re ready to hit the ground running. August, for them, is preseason (like the Jets and Giants). So, which version of August is yours? Maybe it’s a little bit of everything. You want to soak up the last of summer while looking at the calendar to see what’s next. That’s not a bad way to approach the month. To everyone who has something, or nothing, going on in August, my advice is the same: don’t let the days slip by unnoticed. Reach out to friends and family. Take unplanned day trips if there’s nothing on your calendar and do one thing that you used to love doing but haven’t done in a while. August moves fast, and it doesn’t wait around for anyone to catch up. Wishing everyone the best for August and I’ll see you around town.

By JoAnn Cilla Ask ten people what August means to them, and you’ll probably get ten different answers. That’s the funny thing about this month; it wears a lot of hats. For some people, August is the last stretch of summer, and they’re determined to squeeze every drop out of it. Beach trips, backyard barbecues, and late nights on the porch are all added to the list of things to do this month. Parents with school-age kids want more family outings and slow mornings (if that’s an option) before backpacks and bus schedules take over again. Then there are the seasonal businesses for whom August isn’t winding down at all; It’s crunch time. Every sunny day is money in the bank, and every rainy one is a missed opportunity that won’t come back around

SEAFORD - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2026 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

Seaford High School librarian Joanna McCloskey, left, was a recent recipient of the Nassau Association of School Technologists’ NASTAR Award and was nominated by Executive Director for STEM and Instructional Technology Dr. Nicole Culella. Photo courtesy of the Seaford School District Seaford High School librarian Joanna McCloskey has been recognized for her innovation and leadership, as she was recently presented with a NASTAR Award. She was among 26 educators to receive the award from the Nassau Association of School Technologists during a ceremony hosted by Nassau BOCES. Ms. McCloskey, who has been a librarian for 27 years including 26 in Seaford, was nominated by Executive Director for STEM and Instructional Technology Dr. Nicole Culella. In her speech at the awards ceremony, Dr. Culella highlighted Ms. McCloskey’s longstanding commitment to helping students develop their research skills. She continually adapts her teaching to reflect the evolution of technology and ensure students have meaningful and relevant experiences. Most recently, Ms. McCloskey has developed and cultivated the seamless fusion of artificial intelligence and research skills for students. “Joanna McCloskey is an innovative, dynamic and dedicated educator,” Dr. Culella said. “She is the epitome of a lifelong learner by constantly remaining curious and reflective regarding her pedagogical

practices. Joanna is a tremendous asset to Seaford schools and works tirelessly each and every day to ensure robust, critical thinking, technology enriched learning opportunities for all Seaford Scholars.” Over the years, Ms. McCloskey has served as library chairperson, curriculum support specialist and AP Research and Science Research mentor. She is a past Seaford High School Teacher of the Year, holds Wilson Reading certification, school district administrator certification and was the first school librarian to receive the New York Librarian Association’s Sustainability Certification as well as becoming a sustainability mentor. Earlier this year, Ms. McCloskey presented at the AI in Education Showcase hosted by the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents and Molloy University, “Curriculum Design: The Future of Work Isn’t Humans versus AI – It’s Humans with AI.” Ms. McCloskey served as the Seaford Harbor Elementary School librarian from 2000 to 2002 before moving to the high school. Technology has been an integral part of the library program since the early 2000s, she explained, when

the internet and an increased reliance on online databases transformed how students accessed information. “From the beginning, I have sought to help students navigate the ever-changing world of technology while demonstrating the value of both print and digital information,” she said. I have also made evaluating the accuracy, credibility and reliability of information an essential part of every aspect of the library program. Today, as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into how we seek, evaluate and synthesize information, I strive to teach students how to use this powerful tool thoughtfully and responsibly while keeping the student in the driver’s seat.” Ms. McCloskey added that she is humbled and honored to receive the NASTAR Award, and grateful for the support of Seaford’s leadership team. The personal recognition is secondary, she said, to knowing that her students are developing the confidence and gaining the skills necessary to navigate an increasingly complex information and technology landscape with curiosity, discernment and independence.

Back By Popular Demand: Senator Rhoads Announces Additional Stops For 4th Annual Mobile Office Hour Tour Senator Steve Rhoads is bringing his popular Mobile Office Hour Tour back to communities across Senate District 5, providing residents with additional opportunities to meet directly with their State Senator and receive assistance with staterelated issues. Now in its fourth year, the Mobile Office Hour Tour has become a valued community resource, with Senator Rhoads holding more than three dozen office hours at local libraries and community locations throughout the district. Due to continued interest and strong participation from residents, additional dates have been added for the summer and fall. “After three successful years of Mobile Office Hours, I’m excited to bring this program back with even more opportunities

for residents to connect directly with me,” said Senator Rhoads. “The response from our community has been tremendous because people appreciate having a convenient way to share their concerns, ask questions, and get help with state-related issues. Hearing directly from constituents is one of the most important parts of my job, and I look forward to continuing these conversations throughout our district.” Mobile Office Hours provide constituents with a convenient opportunity to discuss issues affecting their families and neighborhoods, seek assistance with state agencies, and share feedback on matters before the New York State Legislature. Appointments are required and may be

scheduled by calling Senator Rhoads’ District Office at 516-8820630. Walk-ins will be accommodated as time permits. Dates and times are subject to change, so residents are encouraged to call ahead to confirm. Upcoming Mobile Office Hour Dates: Monday, September 14 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Levittown Public Library 1 Bluegrass Lane Levittown, NY 11756 Wednesday, September 30 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Seaford Public Library 2234 Jackson Avenue Seaford, NY 11783 Residents interested in attending are encouraged to reserve a time slot by contacting Senator Rhoads’ District Office at 516-882-0630.
