Babylon Town Councilman and Chairman of Public Safety Terence McSweeney praised the responders for their preparation and ability to put their training into action during a highpressure emergency. “As Chairman of Public Safety, I was incredibly proud to see these responders use the training they received and apply it perfectly when it mattered most,” McSweeney said. “Every drill, every exercise, and every hour of preparation came together that night to save lives. Their professionalism, courage, and dedication ensured that every person on that ride was brought safely back to their families.” McSweeney said the incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of first responders and the critical role they play in protecting communities. “It makes you stop and think: What would our world look like without our first responders?”McSweeney said. “When people are facing their most frightening moments, these men and women are the ones who answer the call. They run toward danger because they are committed to helping others.”
Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said the rescue demonstrated the importance of preparedness, teamwork, and having
highly trained emergency personnel ready to respond. Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner
Rudy Sunderman emphasized that successful rescues are the result of ongoing preparation and commitment. “A rescue of this complexity does not happen by accident,” Sunderman said. “It is the result of countless hours of training, planning, and teamwork. The responders involved demonstrated the highest level of skill and dedication, and their actions reflect the outstanding emergency services we have throughout Suffolk County.” “Our first responders are the people we rely on during our most challenging moments,” Richberg said. “Their bravery and commitment during the Adventureland rescue are exactly why we must continue to support and invest in the men and women who protect our
communities every day.” Town officials said the successful rescue highlights the importance of continued investment in emergency response training, equipment, and resources. The Wave Twister ride remained closed following the incident pending a safety review. The Babylon Town Board concluded the recognition by thanking the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and all emergency responders who worked together to ensure that what could have been a tragedy ended with every passenger safely rescued. The event served as a reminder that behind every emergency response are highly trained individuals ready to answer the call when their community needs them most.

The Babylon Town Board honored the first responders whose courage, training, and professionalism helped save the lives of 16 people during a dramatic rescue at Adventureland in East Farmingdale on June 20th. The rescue unfolded after a mechanical malfunction left 15 children and one adult chaperone stranded on the Wave Twister ride, suspended more than 50 feet above the ground. For nearly three hours, emergency personnel worked carefully and methodically to bring each passenger safely back to the ground. Firefighters from local departments, along with members of the Suffolk County Police Emergency Services Unit and emergency medical personnel, used ladder trucks, specialized rescue equipment, and harness systems to remove each rider one at a time. Thanks to their extensive training, coordination, and professionalism, all 16 individuals were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported. At the Babylon Town Board meeting on August 8, 2026, town officials recognized the responders who played a critical role in the successful rescue operation.

Babylon Town Honors First Responders For Heroic Adventureland Ride Rescue
The Town of Babylon Green Homes Program and Spadefoot Ecosystem Solutions are helping homeowners create healthier, more resilient landscapes through a free workshop series focused on native plants and sustainable landscaping. Participants will learn the benefits of native plants, both for Long Island’s environment and for homeowners’ wallets, and they will be taught environmentally friendly landscaping techniques that can be applied in their own yards. “Green Homes is about the whole property, not just what’s inside it,” said Jassi Anand, Sustainability Director of the Town of Babylon Green Homes Program. “Pairing our Green Homes Program with this workshop series gives residents a complete blueprint for a truly
sustainable home, from the roof to the yard.” Native plants are species that occur naturally in a region and have evolved alongside the local climate, soil, and wildlife over thousands of years. Because they are wellsuited to Long Island’s growing conditions, native plants typically need no water or fertilizer, and only occasional maintenance once established, saving homeowners time and money. They also improve biodiversity by providing food and habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife, and they help absorb stormwater and reduce runoff. From wildflowers and ornamental grasses to flowering shrubs and shade trees, native plants offer homeowners a wide range of options for building a vibrant, resilient landscape. In addition to explaining
the basics of native plants, each of the three workshops covers additional points including invasive species and their removal, plant selection basics, pollinator garden explanations, s t o r m w a t e r- f r i e n d l y designs, and practical takeaways attendees can apply at home. “Long Island’s yards have so much untapped potential to support wildlife and manage stormwater, but most homeowners just don’t know where to start,” said Frank Piccininni, President and CEO of Spadefoot Ecosystem Solutions. “These workshops are about giving people practical, hands-on tools to turn their yards into something that’s both low-maintenance and genuinely good for the ecosystem around them.” The remaining workshop on August 31st at 6:00 pm will be held at the Phelps

A strong agricultural sector is vital to a healthy economy. Turbulence has affected local and national economies in recent years, and the global economy has endured its own ups and downs during that span. Though there’s no one-sizefits-all solution to economic struggles, consumers can make a difference by supporting local agricultural producers. Job creation and economic output are two major reasons to support local farmers, and consumers can do that in various ways.
• Purchase seasonal foods. The organization Green America, which offers advice on how environmental sustainability produces stronger economies, notes that purchasing seasonal foods is a great way to support local farmers. Farmers grow seasonal foods throughout the year to take advantage of natural conditions. Consumers who alter their purchasing habits with the seasons by buying foods that are in season are likely supporting local agricultural producers. Read product labels to determine where foods are coming from. Non-seasonal foods are likely imported from
far away, which has a detrimental impact on the environment and local economies. • Buy directly from local farms. Most consumers purchase their food from grocery stores near their homes, but it might be possible to purchase directly from local farmers. Farmers may utilize e-commerce tools to sell directly to residents and might even offer delivery services that are more convenient than driving to the nearest chain grocery store. •A ct as an advocate for local producers. Consumers have considerable power, and that power can be exercised in numerous ways. Supporting restaurants that source food from local farmers is one way consumers can exercise their
power. But consumers can also advocate for local farmers by supporting legislation and candidates that prioritize building and supporting a strong local agricultural
sector. Consumers can also advocate for local farmers by sharing their experiences via social media, word-of-mouth recommendations, or writing positive reviews through aggregators
like Google Reviews. A thriving agricultural sector benefits local economies, and consumers can do much to support the farmers who operate in their towns.

“What I discovered at Woodloch is what I want for my own family, and why we keep coming back, it’s that magic of together.” - Meagan’s My Woodloch Story Discover America’s #1 Family Resort for Yourself Family Resort • Destination Spa • PGA-Rated Golf Course
ELIJA Farm: Located at 43 Foxhurst Road in Huntington Station. This organization runs an 18-week summer CSA program and farm stand. ADDITIONAL WAYS TO SUPPORT: Shop & Dine Local: Ask your grocery store managers to stock local products and support independent farm-to-table restaurants in the Long Island area. Get Involved: Many local farms—and community gardening initiatives—welcome hands-on volunteers during the harvest season. Online Resources: Use the LocalHarvest directory to search for regional CSAs and farm stands that fit your preferences.

• Shop local. The shoplocal movement can make a notable impact on local economies, and it affects more businesses than brickand-mortar stores on Main Street. Locally owned restaurants and grocers often source their food from local farmers, so patronizing such businesses
supports those who set up shop on Main Street as well as the farmers who stock their shelves and pantries.

Tanger Outlets Deer Park And Riverhead Open 2026 Tangerkids Grants Program For Local Schools And Educators
Tanger Outlets Deer Park and Tanger Outlets Riverhead announced that its annual TangerKids Grants Program will return for the 2026/27 academic year, continuing its commitment to supporting local education and providing resources that help students thrive. Educators on Long Island are encouraged to apply for funding at grants.tanger. com through Oct. 18. The TangerKids Grants Program gives teachers and education leaders across the country the opportunity to identify classroom and school needs and request funding for programs that support student success. Grants may be used for initiatives that enhance learning environments, improve accessibility, address student needs and provide additional resources for schools and
classrooms. Faculty members at public and private schools serving pre-K through grade 12 students are eligible to apply. For 30 years, Tanger has invested in education by providing more than $3.9 million in grants to schools and educational programs across the communities it serves through 38 outlet centers and four open-air lifestyle centers. In 2025, TangerKids Grants awarded an estimated $200,000 to initiatives throughout the U.S. and Canada, with a focus on supporting inclusive classroom environments, underserved schools and programs that address evolving student needs. Grant winners for 2026 in each community will be announced and celebrated during the center’s annual TangerKids Day in January 2027.

Fun Ways To Close Out Summer
NORTH BABYLON - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2026 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM
After a few months of fun in the sun, it can be difficult to admit that summer will soon be over. Lazy, hazy days likely filled the calendar, with time spent poolside or at a beach. Just because summer is winding down doesn’t mean that all the relaxing fun must cease. Families can extend the fun a little longer with these ideas that can help everyone ride the last of the summertime wave. The fair is in town The end of summer tends to be fair season. Fairs and carnivals offer an assortment of entertainment all under one roof (or tent). In fact, many people live a short drive away from a fairgrounds, and residents can check the schedule posted on a municipal website. Fairs also are commonly advertised
in newspapers and on signage. Fairs have rides, carnival games, livestock shows and contests, food on a stick, and musical performances. They can be ideal ways for families to find something
fun everyone can enjoy.
want to maximize the end of summer with a vacation. July tends to be a peak month for summer vacations. While August also is popular, prices and crowds tend to drop by late August, meaning families may be able to score good deals the longer they wait. Local summer In many beach towns, the crowds thin considerably after the Labor Day holiday. And beach entry fees may be waived after Labor Day. Families needn’t say goodbye to seaside adventures just because the calendar flips from August to September. There are plenty of warm days still in store. In fact, waiting until the crowds dissipate can make local beach towns and amenities more enjoyable.
backyard or a nearby campsite can be an ideal way to close out summer. Everyone can listen to those late-summer crickets singing their tunes while fireflies light up the sky. While sitting around a campfire or firepit, everyone can take turns sharing what they loved
most about the summer and what they’re looking forward to doing in the weeks to come. Summer may be singing a swan song, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had in the waning weeks of this popular and fun season.

Long Island Children’s Museum Dig Zone Is Now Open Second New Permanent Exhibit In Less Than A Year Invites Children To Build, Dig And Discover Long Island Children’s Museum is giving young builders a place to dream big with the opening of Dig Zone, an interactive construction-themed exhibit where children can scoop, shovel, haul and explore through hands-on play. As the second new permanent exhibit to open at LICM this year, Dig Zone represents the Museum’s continued investment in creating fresh, engaging experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity and learning for Long Island families. Designed for children of all ages, Dig Zone transforms a simple pile of sand into an exciting construction site. Visitors can dig with real tools, load sand into construction vehicles, operate a hand-cranked conveyor belt, and work together to move materials across the job site. Every
scoop and shovel introduces concepts like engineering, simple machines, cause and effect, collaboration and problem-solving through play. “Children naturally learn by doing,” said Ashley Niver, Director of Education at Long Island Children’s Museum. “Dig Zone gives families the freedom to experiment, build, collaborate and imagine together while developing important STEM and socialemotional skills in a joyful, hands-on environment.” Dig Zone joins Saltwater Stories: We Need the Sea & the Sea Needs Me, which opened in October of 2025, as one of the Museum’s newest permanent additions. Together, the exhibits reflect LICM’s commitment to continually evolving the Museum experience for returning visitors while remaining rooted in the
power of play. For many Long Island families, LICM is more than a one-time destination— it’s a place children return to again and again as they grow. Ongoing support from members, donors, and community partners helps make new exhibits like Dig Zone possible while ensuring the Museum continues to create meaningful learning experiences for future generations. “As a nonprofit children’s museum, every contribution helps,” said Niver. “Whether it’s paying admission or a larger investment in our mission, community support allows us to continue building places where children can learn, explore and discover through play.” Dig Zone is included with Museum admission and is now open. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit
www.licm.org. About Long Island Children’s Museum Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) is a 40,000-square-foot, handson learning space dedicated to inspiring imagination and fostering joyful learning
for children and families. With 14 interactive exhibits, live theater, art spaces, educational programs, and special events, LICM welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to explore, create, and discover together. Located
in Garden City on Museum Row, LICM is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents as a museum and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition afforded to museums in the United States.

Who’s Ready for Change? I am! Well...almost. There are still a few weeks of summer left, and I plan to enjoy every one of them: long evenings, open windows, and plenty of sunshine. But I’ll admit it, I’m already dreaming of sweaters and cool morning walks. Maybe that’s the secret to a good life. Enjoy where you are, while looking forward to where you’re headed. Change doesn’t mean rushing past the present moment to get to tomorrow. It means being ready to say yes to the future when it gets here. This fall I will help clients buy their dream home, and I will help homeowners sell theirs to start a new chapter. Embrace Change!
