ADMINISTRATIVE ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT Experience in Accounts Payable & Receivable JOANN CILLA won’t come back around until next summer. These business owners aren’t thinking about pumpkin spice lattes and fall foliage; they’re thinking about maximizing the next 31 days. On the flip side, there are many business owners looking past Labor Day and straight at the November/ December holiday season. Retailers and other companies who earn much of their revenue in the last two months of the year are placing orders, locking in seasonal staff, and planning their promotions so that when the calendar turns to fall, they’re ready to hit the ground running. August, for them, is pre-season (like the Jets and Giants). So, which version of August is yours? Maybe it’s a little bit of everything. You want to soak up the last of summer while looking at the calendar to see what’s next. That’s not a bad way to approach the month. To everyone who has something, or nothing, going on in August, my advice is the same: don’t let the days slip by unnoticed. Reach out to friends and family. Take unplanned day trips if there’s nothing on your calendar and do one thing that you used to love doing but haven’t done in a while. August moves fast, and it doesn’t wait around for anyone to catch up. Wishing everyone the best for August and I’ll see you around town.

By JoAnn Cilla Ask ten people what August means to them, and you’ll probably get ten different answers. That’s the funny thing about this month; it wears a lot of hats. For some people, August is the last stretch of summer, and they’re determined to squeeze every drop out of it. Beach trips, backyard barbecues, and late nights on the porch are all added to the list of things to do this month. Parents with school-age kids want more family outings and slow mornings (if that’s an option) before backpacks and bus schedules take over again. Then there are the seasonal businesses for whom August isn’t winding down at all; It’s crunch time. Every sunny day is money in the bank, and every rainy one is a missed opportunity that

thinking about other children who might be feeling the same way. Stuffed animals helped Teagan feel safe and comforted during difficult moments, inspiring her to bring that same reassurance to other children. From that idea, Teagan’s Bear Hugs for Brave Kids was created, providing stuffed animals and encouragement to children facing scary and uncertain times. Town officials praised Teagan for turning her own challenges into something positive that helps others. “Teagan has shown a level of compassion and understanding that is far beyond her years,” Supervisor Rich Schaffer said. “She took something that was difficult in her own life and turned it into something positive that helps bring comfort and hope to other children.” Teagan’s parents, Joe

and Melissa Coyle, have supported her efforts and attended the recognition. At just 9 years old, Teagan has also become a leader in the healthcare community as the Children’s Ambassador for the Northwell Health

Charity Event. Through her advocacy and kindness, she continues to raise awareness about supporting children and families during medical journeys. “Teagan reminds us that courage is not only about what you overcome; it is

also about what you do for others because of what you have experienced,” Schaffer said. “Her generosity, strength, and compassion serve as an inspiration to our entire community.” The Town Board thanked Teagan for bringing smiles,

comfort, and hope to children facing challenging times. Through Teagan’s Bear Hugs for Brave Kids, she continues to share a message of hope: no child should have to face a difficult moment feeling alone.

The Board honored 9-yearold Teagan Coyle for her courage, compassion, and commitment to helping children facing difficult medical challenges. Teagan was recognized not only for the strength she has shown throughout her own health journey, but for turning her experiences into an opportunity to comfort and support other children in need. Born with a heart condition, Teagan underwent open-heart surgery at Cohen Children’s Hospital just three days after birth. Since then, she has endured additional surgeries and medical procedures, facing each challenge with extraordinary bravery. During her hospital stays, Teagan experienced the fear and uncertainty many children and families face during serious medical situations. Instead of focusing only on her

Lindenhurst Cosmetology Students Earn their Licenses The Lindenhurst School District’s inaugural Cosmetology Program cohort are now earning their licenses, with the first seven students having successfully passed the New York State Cosmetology Board Examination and additional students scheduled to take their exams. The program, which launched in September 2024 with 14 students, requires a rigorous 1,000 hours of training over two years before students become eligible to sit for the state licensing exam. The seven students who have already passed are the first fully licensed cosmetologists to graduate from the District’s program. This milestone marks a significant achievement for both the students and the Lindenhurst School District, highlighting the success of a program that provides industry-recognized credentials and career-ready skills while students are still in high school. Their instructor was Ms. Jaclyn Coscia.

Babylon Town Councilman and Chairman of Public Safety Terence McSweeney praised the responders for their preparation and ability to put their training into action during a highpressure emergency. “As Chairman of Public Safety, I was incredibly proud to see these responders use the training they received and apply it perfectly when it mattered most,” McSweeney said. “Every drill, every exercise, and every hour of preparation came together that night to save lives. Their professionalism, courage, and dedication ensured that every person on that ride was brought safely back to their families.” McSweeney said the incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of first responders and the critical role they play in protecting communities. “It makes you stop and think: What would our world look like without our first responders?”McSweeney said. “When people are facing their most frightening moments, these men and women are the ones who answer the call. They run toward danger because they are committed to helping others.”

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said the rescue demonstrated the importance of preparedness, teamwork, and having

highly trained emergency personnel ready to respond. Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner

Rudy Sunderman emphasized that successful rescues are the result of ongoing preparation and commitment. “A rescue of this complexity does not happen by accident,” Sunderman said. “It is the result of countless hours of training, planning, and teamwork. The responders involved demonstrated the highest level of skill and dedication, and their actions reflect the outstanding emergency services we have throughout Suffolk County.” “Our first responders are the people we rely on during our most challenging moments,” Richberg said. “Their bravery and commitment during the Adventureland rescue are exactly why we must continue to support and invest in the men and women who protect our

communities every day.” Town officials said the successful rescue highlights the importance of continued investment in emergency response training, equipment, and resources. The Wave Twister ride remained closed following the incident pending a safety review. The Babylon Town Board concluded the recognition by thanking the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and all emergency responders who worked together to ensure that what could have been a tragedy ended with every passenger safely rescued. The event served as a reminder that behind every emergency response are highly trained individuals ready to answer the call when their community needs them most.

The Babylon Town Board honored the first responders whose courage, training, and professionalism helped save the lives of 16 people during a dramatic rescue at Adventureland in East Farmingdale on June 20th. The rescue unfolded after a mechanical malfunction left 15 children and one adult chaperone stranded on the Wave Twister ride, suspended more than 50 feet above the ground. For nearly three hours, emergency personnel worked carefully and methodically to bring each passenger safely back to the ground. Firefighters from local departments, along with members of the Suffolk County Police Emergency Services Unit and emergency medical personnel, used ladder trucks, specialized rescue equipment, and harness systems to remove each rider one at a time. Thanks to their extensive training, coordination, and professionalism, all 16 individuals were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported. At the Babylon Town Board meeting on August 8, 2026, town officials recognized the responders who played a critical role in the successful rescue operation.

State Boosts Funding For Boat Pump-Out Stations, Bringing More Resources To Town Of Babylon The Town of Babylon is welcoming increased funding from New York State for the Clean Vessel Assistance Program, an initiative designed to help municipalities, marinas and other eligible organizations improve boat pump-out facilities and protect Long Island’s waterways. The increased funding raises the maximum grant for mobile pump-out boats from $60,000 to $80,000 and increases funding for stationary pump-out facilities and upgrades from $35,000 to $40,000. The Town of Babylon has been awarded approximately $136,000 for pump-out operations at its marinas, including the pump-out facility at Tanner Park Marina in Copiague. Town officials say the investment is particularly important for Babylon, which has miles of waterfront and a large boating community. “Our waterways are one of the Town of Babylon’s greatest treasures, and protecting them is something we all have a responsibility to do,” said Deputy Supervisor and Councilman Tony Martinez, who also serves as Chairman of the Town of Babylon Parks Department. “These pump-out stations provide boaters with an easy and responsible way to dispose of wastewater and help ensure that sewage doesn’t end up in our bays, canals and harbors.” Martinez said the funding

represents an important investment not only in the environment, but also in Babylon’s waterfront economy and quality of life. “Our parks and marinas are enjoyed by residents, families, fishermen and boaters throughout the region. Keeping our waterways clean means protecting those recreational opportunities and preserving our waterfront for future generations,” Martinez said. The Clean Vessel Assistance Program supports infrastructure that allows recreational boaters to properly dispose of sewage rather than release it into surrounding waters. According to environmental advocates cited in the recent announcement, pumpout programs prevent an estimated 1 million gallons of wastewater from entering local waterways each summer. Martinez also emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation in securing resources for the community. “Whether you’re a Republican, a Democrat, or somewhere in between, clean water is something we can all agree on. There is no political party when it comes to protecting our environment and keeping our bays and harbors clean,” he said. “We appreciate our partners at every level of government who recognize the importance of investing in Babylon’s waterfront.” The Town of Babylon

continues to work with state and county partners to pursue grants and other funding opportunities that strengthen its parks, marinas and environmental infrastructure. “As Chairman of Parks, I see firsthand how important our waterfront facilities are to the people of Babylon. These investments allow us to maintain those facilities while being responsible stewards of our natural resources,” Martinez said. “This is exactly the kind of investment that benefits everyone who calls Babylon home.”

Town Of Babylon Dedicates “Tom Iliou Way” For Community Leader’s 90th Birthday

John Theissen Children’s Foundation School Supply Drive Now thru September 6th The John Theissen Children’s Foundation is collecting new school supplies for underprivileged children on Long Island, grades K-12. Donations include backpacks, notebooks,

writing instruments, and art supplies. Items are accepted at their Wantagh center located at 1492 Wantagh Avenue. Contact via phone or email for hours and questions to support local students’

education. They are collecting at their center in Wantagh, located at 1492 Wantagh Avenue. Please call 516-679-5098 or email john@jtcf.org with any questions

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman Anthony Manetta joined family and friends in West Babylon on August 1 to dedicate the corner of Evergreen Street and Great East Neck Road as “Tom Iliou Way,” honoring Tom Iliou on his 90th birthday. Iliou has been a pillar of the West Babylon community for decades, dedicating years of service and generosity to his neighbors. Pictured left to right: Judge John Iliou, Supervisor Rich Schaffer, honoree Tom Iliou and Councilman Anthony Manetta.

Advance Care Plans The United States population is rapidly aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising roughly 20 percent of the U.S. population. With age comes the added burden of dealing with illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you unable to make decisions involving your care. Unless you have a plan in place, the burden will fall on your family. Protect your loved ones from having to make life and death decisions on your behalf by developing an advance care plan today.

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs. Anyone interested should call Western Suffolk BOCES to meet with a counselor. Call 667-6000, Ext. 327 to register.

Leaves Can Stain Exterior Surfaces Leaves can be beautiful, but they can also leave unsightly stains on vehicles, driveways, patios, and other surfaces. When leaves become wet and sit for too long, tannins in the leaves can seep into porous materials such as concrete. While stains may eventually fade, homeowners can remove them sooner by mixing oxygen bleach with hot water and scrubbing with a brush. Tougher stains may require a cleanser containing trisodium phosphate. Pressure washers and commercial leaf-stain removers are other options for stubborn stains.

Who’s Ready for Change?

I am! Well...almost. There are still a few weeks of summer left, and I plan to enjoy every one of them: long evenings, open windows, and plenty of sunshine. But I’ll admit it, I’m already dreaming of sweaters and cool morning walks. Maybe that’s the secret to a good life. Enjoy where you are, while looking forward to where you’re headed. Change doesn’t mean rushing past the present moment to get to tomorrow. It means being ready to say yes to the future when it gets here. This fall I will help clients buy their dream home, and I will help homeowners sell theirs to start a new chapter. Embrace Change!
