The Deer Park School District has appointed Ashley Varney as an associate principal at John Quincy Adams Primary School, where she had taught second grade for the past nine years. Varney previously taught abroad at two international schools; she worked as a first grade teacher at the International School of Kuala Lumpur in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for three years, and as a kindergarten and first grade teacher at the American School of Guatemala in Guatemala City, Guatemala for four years. A Brookhaven resident, Varney earned a bachelor’s degree in business and

economics and a master’s degree in elementary education, both from Lehigh University, and her advanced graduate certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. “It is truly a dream to begin my leadership journey here in Deer Park,” Varney said. “Our community has been an inspiration to me, and I look forward to supporting our amazing JQA family as we continue to make our school a warm and welcoming place where every child, family and staff member feels seen, heard and valued. State Boosts Funding For Boat Pump-Out Stations, Bringing More Resources To Town Of Babylon The Town of Babylon is welcoming increased funding from New York State for the Clean Vessel Assistance Program, an initiative designed to help municipalities, marinas and other eligible organizations improve boat pump-out facilities and protect Long Island’s waterways. The increased funding raises the maximum grant for mobile pump-out boats from $60,000 to $80,000 and increases funding for stationary pump-out facilities and upgrades from $35,000 to $40,000. The Town of Babylon has been awarded approximately $136,000 for pump-out operations at its marinas, including the pump-out facility at Tanner Park Marina in Copiague. Town officials say the investment is particularly important for Babylon, which has miles of waterfront and a large

boating community. “Our waterways are one of the Town of Babylon’s greatest treasures, and protecting them is something we all have a responsibility to do,” said Deputy Supervisor and Councilman Tony Martinez, who also serves as Chairman of the Town of Babylon Parks Department. “These pumpout stations provide boaters with an easy and responsible way to dispose of wastewater and help ensure that sewage doesn’t end up in our bays, canals and harbors.” Martinez said the funding represents an important investment not only in the environment, but also in Babylon’s waterfront economy and quality of life. “Our parks and marinas are enjoyed by residents, families, fishermen and boaters throughout the region. Keeping our waterways clean means protecting those recreational

opportunities and preserving our waterfront for future generations,” Martinez said. The Clean Vessel Assistance Program supports infrastructure that allows recreational boaters to properly dispose of sewage rather than release it into surrounding waters. According to environmental advocates cited in the recent announcement, pumpout programs prevent an estimated 1 million gallons of wastewater from entering local waterways each summer. Martinez also emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation in securing resources for the community. “Whether you’re a Republican, a Democrat, or somewhere in between, clean water is something we can all agree on. There is no political party when it comes to protecting our environment and keeping

our bays and harbors clean,” he said. “We appreciate our partners at every level of government who recognize the importance of investing in Babylon’s waterfront.” The Town of Babylon continues to work with state and county partners

to pursue grants and other funding opportunities that strengthen its parks, marinas and environmental infrastructure. “As Chairman of Parks, I see firsthand how important our waterfront facilities are to the people of Babylon.

These investments allow us to maintain those facilities while being responsible stewards of our natural resources,” Martinez said. “This is exactly the kind of investment that benefits everyone who calls Babylon home.”

Babylon Town Honors First Responders For Heroic Adventureland Ride Rescue The Babylon Town Board honored the first responders whose courage, training, and professionalism helped save the lives of 16 people during a dramatic rescue at Adventureland in East Farmingdale on June 20th. The rescue unfolded after a mechanical malfunction left 15 children and one adult chaperone stranded on the Wave Twister ride, suspended more than 50 feet above the ground. For nearly three hours, emergency personnel worked carefully and methodically to bring each passenger safely back to the ground. Firefighters from local departments, along with members of the Suffolk County Police Emergency Services Unit and emergency medical personnel, used ladder trucks, specialized rescue equipment, and harness systems to remove each rider one at a time. Thanks to their extensive training, coordination, and professionalism, all 16 individuals were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported.At the Babylon Town Board meeting on August 8, 2026, town officials recognized the responders who played a critical role in the successful rescue operation.

Babylon Town Councilman and Chairman of Public Safety Terence McSweeney praised the responders for their preparation and ability to put their training into action during a highpressure emergency. “As Chairman of Public Safety, I was incredibly proud to see these responders use the training they received and apply it perfectly when it mattered most,” McSweeney said. “Every drill, every exercise, and every hour of preparation came together that night to save lives. Their professionalism, courage, and dedication ensured that every person on that ride was brought safely back to their families.” McSweeney said the incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of first responders and the critical role they play in protecting communities. “It makes you stop and think: What would our world look like without our first responders?”McSweeney said. “When people are facing their most frightening moments, these men and women are the ones who answer the call. They run toward danger because they are committed to helping others.”

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said the rescue demonstrated the importance of preparedness, teamwork, and having

highly trained emergency personnel ready to respond. Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner

Rudy Sunderman emphasized that successful rescues are the result of ongoing preparation and commitment. “A rescue of this complexity does not happen by accident,” Sunderman said. “It is the result of countless hours of training, planning, and teamwork. The responders involved demonstrated the highest level of skill and dedication, and their actions reflect the outstanding emergency services we have throughout Suffolk County.” “Our first responders are the people we rely on during our most challenging moments,” Richberg said. “Their bravery and commitment during the Adventureland rescue are exactly why we must continue to support and invest in the men and women who protect our

communities every day.” Town officials said the successful rescue highlights the importance of continued investment in emergency response training, equipment, and resources. The Wave Twister ride remained closed following the incident pending a safety review. The Babylon Town Board concluded the recognition by thanking the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and all emergency responders who worked together to ensure that what could have been a tragedy ended with every passenger safely rescued. The event served as a reminder that behind every emergency response are highly trained individuals ready to answer the call when their community needs them most.
