Long Island marinas and municipalities can receive up to $80,000 in funding for wastewater pump-out infrastructure through expanded grants available from New York’s Clean Vessel Assistance Program, state Sen. Monica R. Martinez and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced. The increased funding aims to improve water quality across Long Island and throughout the state by preventing untreated sewage from entering recreational waters. Improperly discharged wastewater from vessels adds nitrogen to local bays and harbors. When combined with runoff from outdated septic infrastructure, which is commonplace on Long Island, this excess nitrogen fuels harmful algal blooms and degrades coastal ecosystems. “Boaters have an innate love for the water, and when proper discharge options are available, few would choose to spoil the very places where they recreate,” Martinez said. “Expanding investments in this program will make it easier for vessel operators to comply with the environmental safeguards that protect our water from harmful pollution. I thank Governor Hochul for her continued commitment to Long Island and our state’s waterways.” While most state coastal waters and connecting waterways are designated No Discharge Zones where vessel sewage disposal is illegal, compliance relies heavily on access to proper infrastructure. Small pump-out stations and mobile pump-out boats provide a convenient way for vessel operators to properly dispose of onboard waste, reducing the physical barriers to compliance. Grants are now available in amounts up

Students Travel ‘Under The Sea’

During the third week of West Islip Union Free School District’s Summer Investigations program at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School, students embarked on an exciting underwater adventure as they explored the theme “Under the Sea.” Through hands-on lessons in literacy, math and science, students discovered the fascinating world of ocean ecosystems while strengthening academic

skills in an engaging and interactive environment. In the library media center, they learned about the ocean’s three zones and the unique animals that inhabit each one. After reading “The Escape Artist,” students researched sea animals, uncovered interesting facts about octopuses and created layered ocean scenes depicting marine life found throughout the different ocean zones.

Students also used the digital learning platform PebbleGo to research sea creatures of their choice and enjoyed a flashlight reading activity inspired by the ocean’s darker depths. Math lessons incorporated the week's theme through ocean-inspired games and activities, including fishing for math facts, math bingo and word problems featuring marine vocabulary. In the STEM lab,

students explored coral reefs, fossils and ocean habitats through a variety of hands-on investigations. They took a virtual field trip to Australia’s coral reefs, created their own sea animals and fossils using homemade salt dough, and practiced measurement skills by measuring their fossil creations. Students also participated in interactive science stations that demonstrated how blubber helps protect marine animals from cold water and explored the environmental impact of oil spills by simulating a cleanup effort. The activities helped students gain a deeper understanding of marine conservation and the importance of protecting ocean ecosystems. To conclude the week, students put their creativity to work by designing aquariums, sea animals, bridges and other ocean-

themed creations using LEGO bricks and magnetic tiles. The week also featured a special visit from Ms. Carol

of the West Islip Public Library, who shared the story “The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark.”

After a summer of relaxation, the start of a new school year generates mixed emotions among students. Many children look forward to being back on campus with their friends but may not revel in the idea of waking up early or doing homework each night. While summer break is a much neededrespite from the rigors of school, it doesn’t mean school should be forgotten entirely. In fact, doing some preparatory steps before a new school year begins can make the year go much more smoothly. Here’s how students and parents can direct their focus during the final countdown. Keep reading According to Scholastic, summer slide is a concept that was first acknowledged by researchers in 1996. Many comprehensive studies have come out since then and indicated that kids lose significant knowledge in reading and math over summer break, which can have a cumulative effect and lead to skill loss each year. Some research says up to 20 percent of school year gains in reading and 27 percent in math are lost during summer break. Children should be encouraged to read as much as possible during summer break, particularly since many schools require summer reading and subsequent essays or book reports upon returning to the classroom. Let kids read what they want, whether it’s comics, magazines, the newspaper, or even books they’ve read before. Accumulate supplies School may not be on the radar early in summer, but it’s wise to purchase supplies early. Right before school starts there is a mad dash to grab notebooks, pens, clothing, and more, which can make for a stressful shopping experience for all involved. Shopping early helps families avoid that outcome. Brush up on math skills It can’t hurt for students to do a few math problems over the summer. Practice keeps skills fresh and any mathematical formulas prominent in their minds. All it takes is one or two problems per day to stay on top of math skills. Visit educational attractions Families can include museums, art exhibits, animal sanctuaries, libraries, science centers, and similar attractions in the list of places they visit over the summer. This way students can learn and be entertained simultaneously. Start enforcing bedtimes School-aged children (six to 13 years) need nine to 12 hours of sleep every night, according to KidsHealth.org. During the summer, late nights can easily be rectified by sleeping in the next day. But when school resumes, the alarm clock will be ringing earlier than expected. Parents can gradually implement earlier bedtimes as summer winds down so that kids are getting the rest they will need. Get in the know Parents can begin to pay closer attention to emails and social media posts from schools as they’ll likely contain information about upcoming school calendars, bus routes (or transportation registration), changes in personnel, or any additional updates. This will help alleviate any surprises on the first day of school.
