Ferretti Teams With Lifeguards To Help Beachgoers Learn How To ‘Break The Grip Of The Rip’

Every Journey Begins With A Single Step By Kerry Mastrobuoni

safety precautions that could potentially save a life.” Supervisor Ferretti is joined by Deputy Supervisor Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilwoman Missy Miller, Councilwoman Laura Ryder, Councilman Chris Schneider, Town Clerk Kate Murray, and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll, along with the town’s prestigious lifeguard team, to provide safety tips and a live demonstration on proper ocean rescue in the wake of a potentially deadly rip current. If caught in a rip current: • Relax; rip currents don’t pull you under. • Don’t swim against the current. • Swim out of the current, then to shore. • If you can’t escape, float or tread water. • If you need help, yell or wave for assistance. Other Safety Tips • Know how to swim. • Never swim alone. • If in doubt, don’t go out. • Swim near a lifeguard. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. Typically, rip currents extend

from the shoreline, through the surf zone and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves … at any time. The brochure also reminds residents that many people drown while trying to save others from a rip current and urges them to remain safe by getting help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is unavailable, the brochure recommends having someone call 911 and, from the land, throwing the victim something that floats and/or yelling instructions on how to escape. Copies of the Town of Hempstead Riptide Safety Brochure are available at town beach entry toll booths throughout the remainder of the summer, as well as on the town website at hempsteadny.gov. “Take a few minutes to read this informative brochure,” Supervisor Ferretti says. “You will learn something new and maybe will even be able to save a life or protect your own. We want people to enjoy our beautiful beaches and enjoy the rest of their summer while, at the same time, being safe. Thank you to our Hempstead Town lifeguard team for safeguarding our shoreline and for leading this important awareness program.”

very Journey begins with a single step, but it isn’t always the destination that shapes us, It’s the direction we choose each day. That’s why I’ve called this column Kerry’s Compass. A Compass doesn’t tell us how fast to travel or what challenges lie ahead, It simply points us toward true north. It’s been many years since I last put my thoughts on paper. Somewhere between marriage, raising children, work, friendships, family gatherings and keeping up with the beautiful chaos of everyday life, writing quietly found its place on the back burner. Not forgotten, just patiently waiting. Now, as life begins to slow down in the best possible way, it feels like the perfect time to begin writing again. So welcome to Kerry’s Compass. If you know me, you probably know there’s no better place to start than The End - Montauk. There’s a certain magic that begins the moment you cross into town. The air feels different. It’s as if the Atlantic has a way of reminding you to breathe a little deeper. Montauk has changed over the years. It’s no secret that influencers, luxury hotels, and social media have transformed this once-quiet fishing village into one of the East Coast’s trendiest destinations. Prices have climbed right alongside its popularity, and yes, a weekend in peak summer can leave your wallet noticeably lighter.

Some of my favorite memories have been made over long dinners at Duryea’s, where the waterfront views somehow make time stand still. Cocktails at The Crow’s Nest have become a tradition, with its effortless coastal charm and twinkling lights that make every evening feel like summer should never end. And then there’s The Montauket, perched high above the water, where locals and visitors gather together to watch one of the most spectacular sunsets on Long Island. It truly never gets old. Beyond the well-known favorites lies the history that gives Montauk its soul. The iconic Montauk Point Lighthouse that has stood watch since 1796, guiding ships through changing tides for generations. Wander the quiet trails of Camp Hero, explore hidden beaches tucked away from the crowds, or simply take a scenic drive to discover the corners that don’t always make it onto Instagram. Those are often the places that stay with you the longest. That’s what I hope Kerry’s Compass becomes—a place to share destinations worth exploring, hidden gems waiting to be discovered, and stories that remind us why we travel in the first place. Sometimes the greatest journeys aren’t measured in miles but in the memories they leave behind. And for me, this journey begins exactly where it should. At The End! I’d love to hear from you! Share your travel tips, ideas and inspiration at Kerryscompass@longislandmediagroup. com. Until next time, always let your compass lead you somewhere worth remembering.

As residents flock to the Town of Hempstead’s beautiful ocean beaches during the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season, Supervisor John Ferretti and the Hempstead Town Board are teaming with the awardwinning TOH Lifeguard Squad to launch a Riptide Safety Awareness program to help keep swimmers safe. Recently, a few miles to the east at a Suffolk County beach, a family of five was rescued by lifeguards after almost being swept to sea by a dangerous riptide. What’s more, during Monday’s severe weather, town beaches are “red-flagged” and closed to swimmers for several hours due to ripcurrent warnings. Today, Ferretti and the TOH lifeguard team remind residents that this incident can occur at any moment, even on a pristine day, and beachgoers should remain vigilant and prepared if confronted with a dangerous rip current in the ocean. “On a seemingly normal, sunny day while cooling off in the ocean, a riptide can strike at any moment,” Ferretti says. “While we are proud to have one of the most elite lifeguard teams on the East Coast patrolling our waters, we want beachgoers to understand the dangers of rip currents, while also learning these important

But here’s the secret seasoned Montauk lovers already know: you can still experience its charm without spending a fortune. Visit midweek, come after Labor Day when the crowds thin, or sneak away during the shoulder season. The beaches are just as breathtaking, the sunsets just as spectacular, and you’ll often discover the Montauk that locals have loved for generations.

Senator Rhoads Leads Environmental Cleanup At Tackapausha Park team to pick up bottles, cans, wrappers, plastics, and other litter. Their participation reflected the strong tradition of community service and environmental stewardship demonstrated by young people throughout the district. Senator Rhoads recognized the leadership of his intern, Aidan Saxe, who spearheaded the initiative and played a key role in organizing the cleanup and coordinating volunteers. Fellow intern Benjamin Kugal also assisted with the organization of the event and worked alongside volunteers throughout the cleanup. Tackapausha Museum and Preserve is an important natural and recreational resource for Seaford and surrounding communities. Its trails, habitats, and open spaces provide residents with an opportunity to enjoy Long Island’s natural environment while supporting local wildlife.

Local Resident, Local Agent, Local Knowledge, Local Service.

Removing litter helps protect those habitats, prevents waste from reaching nearby waterways, and keeps the preserve enjoyable for visitors. “Environmental stewardship starts right here at home,” said Senator Steve Rhoads. “I’ve always believed that if you see a problem in your community, you shouldn’t just point

it out, you should roll up your sleeves and help solve it. That’s why I’m proud to continue bringing people together for cleanups like this. Every bag of litter we remove makes a difference and helps ensure these beautiful places remain here for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.” Senator Rhoads thanked the Scouts, interns,

volunteers, and community members who contributed their time and effort to the cleanup, noting that their participation demonstrates the strong spirit of service throughout the 5th Senate District. “Protecting our environment isn’t just about big policies, it’s also about taking care of the places right outside our doors,”

Rhoads said. “When we work together, we can leave our parks and public spaces better than we found them.” Senator Rhoads looks forward to continuing to work with local residents, Scouts, and community organizations on future efforts to protect and improve Long Island’s parks, preserves, and public spaces.

New York State Senator Steve Rhoads rolled up his sleeves on August 7 to lead a community cleanup at Tackapausha Museum and Preserve in Seaford, continuing his longstanding commitment to protecting Long Island’s environment and keeping local public spaces clean. Over the years, Senator Rhoads has organized and participated in numerous community cleanups throughout the 5th Senate District, bringing residents, volunteers, and community organizations together to make a handson difference. This latest effort brought together members of Senator Rhoads’ office, local volunteers, and Scouts, who collected 11 full bags of garbage from trails and public areas throughout the preserve. Members of Wantagh Boy Scout Troop 96 and Girl Scout Troop 3209 joined the effort, working alongside Senator Rhoads and his

Summer Workshops Get Seaford Seniors College Ready

Seaford High School guidance counselors Suzanne Cosenza and Sarah Squicciarini led a College Bootcamp workshop for seniors on Aug. 11 focusing on the common application. Photo courtesy of the Seaford School District complete by the end of summer, they can have a more productive and enjoyable senior year. Senior Michael Gagliano

attended sessions on Aug. 3 and 11 in the high school library. He is completing most of the application at home, so the bootcamp

is giving him the tools to navigate the different sections. “It’s really helpful,” Michael said. “The

Seaford High School seniors are getting a head start on the college application process with a series of summer planning workshops. College Bootcamp features four two-hour sessions in August that focus on the application process and completing the Common App. The workshops are led by Seaford High School guidance counselors, who provide an overview of all sections of the online common application and also answer individual questions. Some of the areas they review are individual profile, family, education, extracurricular activities and financial aid. The goal of College Bootcamp is to help seniors prioritize one of the most important processes of their high school career and feel more in control of the application process. By having a majority of the application process

guidance counselors have a lot of information we need, and are answering our questions.” Additional workshops

will take place when the school year begins on topics such as college essay writing and SUNY application week.

Town Receives County Grant For Shark Prevention Tools At Town Beaches

Ready to once again dazzle the audience, nearly 100 Seaford High School students spent four summer days preparing this year’s marching band show. It is performed during the Newsday Marching Band Festival and during halftime at home football games, requiring a lot of work to learn music and choreography. The marching band camp took place from Aug. 10–13 featuring close to 70 musicians and 30 members of the color guard. This year’s theme is “The Greatest Viking,” a play on the 2017 film, “The Greatest Showman.” This year’s set, approximately seven

minutes long, features songs “The Greatest Show” and “This is Me” before closing with a combination piece of “Never Enough” and “From Now On.” Always willing to put on a dynamic performance, students will perform circus acts including acrobatics, juggling and tightrope walking. A surprise drum stunt is also in store and there will be a hula hoop decorated to look like a ring of fire. The camp was led by high school band directors Dr. Anthony Romeo and Christopher Coniglio along with support from Nicholas Coacci, Angela Dean, Daniel Krueger and Dr. Marc

The band captains are Emily Comisky and Isabella Florio, and color guard leaders include Julia DiPietro, Sydney McEntee and Sophia Sampson. Students enjoyed themed dress-up days throughout the camp, which included time on the field to practice choreography and sessions in the band room to learn the music before heading back out to the field to put the two pieces together. The final afternoon featured a sneak peak performance for parents. Members of the Seaford High School marching band prepared the choreography for this year’s “The Greatest Viking” marching band show during a four-day camp from Aug. 10–13.
