In Loving Memory of Mae Santonastaso Mae (Panzarella) Santonastaso, age 92, of Lindenhurst, New York, passed away on July 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, kindness, and unconditional love. Born on December 26, 1933, Mae lived as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She lived a life centered on family and making everyone feel welcome. Mae was raised in Brooklyn, attended Thomas Jefferson High School and worked for Bendix Aviation in Manhattan before marrying her husband, Domenick on October 29, 1955. In 1963, they settled in Lindenhurst, growing their family and creating a home ﬁlled with warmth, laughter, and tradition. Mae found life-long happiness in caring for her family. She was known for her generosity and insightful wisdom, as well as her ability to comfort newborns, a gift that came naturally to her. Her love was expressed in countless meaningful ways, whether by bonding over a cup of coffee, knitting sweaters and blankets for grandchildren, preparing home-cooked meals, especially her unforgettable lasagna and comforting chicken soup, laughing over games of cards, dominoes, and Scrabble, or sharing cherished stories. These moments brought the family together around the kitchen table. Mae made each person in her life feel uniquely cared about.

Mae's greatest legacy is the family she nurtured and the countless lives she touched with her warmth and unwavering commitment. She taught those around her the importance of faith, family, hospitality, and kindness. Mae’s gracious spirit, beautiful smile, thoughtful handwritten cards and wise advice will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Her family ﬁnds comfort in knowing she has returned home—to God, to her beloved Domenick, and to the loved ones who have gone before her. Mae’s memory will continue to live on in every family gathering, every shared meal, and every open door that welcomes another. The lifelong bond she shared with her brother, Joseph, whose companionship and love remained constant throughout their lives, was a blessing to her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Domenick; her parents Joseph and Anna; and her brothers Rosario, Philip and Joseph. Mae is survived by her loving children, Frank, Joseph, Christine, John, Mary Grace, Ann, and Donna; her sixteen adored grandchildren; nineteen treasured great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends. She will be remembered for the family she loved, the friendships she cherished, and the countless lives touched by making others feel included and valued. Mae will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

State Boosts Funding For Boat Pump-Out Stations, Bringing More Resources To Town Of Babylon The Town of Babylon is welcoming increased funding from New York State for the Clean Vessel Assistance Program, an initiative designed to help municipalities, marinas and other eligible organizations improve boat pump-out facilities and protect Long Island’s waterways. The increased funding raises the maximum grant for mobile pump-out boats from $60,000 to $80,000 and increases funding for stationary pump-out facilities and upgrades from $35,000 to $40,000. The Town of Babylon has been awarded approximately $136,000 for pump-out operations at its marinas, including the pump-out facility at Tanner Park Marina in Copiague. Town officials say the investment is particularly important for Babylon, which has miles of waterfront and a large

boating community. “Our waterways are one of the Town of Babylon’s greatest treasures, and protecting them is something we all have a responsibility to do,” said Deputy Supervisor and Councilman Tony Martinez, who also serves as Chairman of the Town of Babylon Parks Department. “These pumpout stations provide boaters with an easy and responsible way to dispose of wastewater and help ensure that sewage doesn’t end up in our bays, canals and harbors.” Martinez said the funding represents an important investment not only in the environment, but also in Babylon’s waterfront economy and quality of life. “Our parks and marinas are enjoyed by residents, families, fishermen and boaters throughout the region. Keeping our waterways clean means protecting those recreational

opportunities and preserving our waterfront for future generations,” Martinez said. The Clean Vessel Assistance Program supports infrastructure that allows recreational boaters to properly dispose of sewage rather than release it into surrounding waters. According to environmental advocates cited in the recent announcement, pumpout programs prevent an estimated 1 million gallons of wastewater from entering local waterways each summer. Martinez also emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation in securing resources for the community. “Whether you’re a Republican, a Democrat, or somewhere in between, clean water is something we can all agree on. There is no political party when it comes to protecting our environment and keeping

our bays and harbors clean,” he said. “We appreciate our partners at every level of government who recognize the importance of investing in Babylon’s waterfront.” The Town of Babylon continues to work with state and county partners

to pursue grants and other funding opportunities that strengthen its parks, marinas and environmental infrastructure. “As Chairman of Parks, I see firsthand how important our waterfront facilities are to the people of Babylon.

These investments allow us to maintain those facilities while being responsible stewards of our natural resources,” Martinez said. “This is exactly the kind of investment that benefits everyone who calls Babylon home.”

For some people, August is the last stretch of summer, and they’re determined to squeeze every drop out of it. Beach trips, backyard barbecues, and late nights on the porch are all added to the list of things to do this month. Parents with school-age kids want more family outings and slow mornings (if that’s an option) before backpacks and bus schedules take over again. Lindenhurst Historical Society Seeks Community Photos and Videos for 25th Anniversary 9/11 Documentary As our community prepares to mark the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Lindenhurst Historical Society is honored to begin production of a documentary that will preserve Lindenhurst’s story of that day and the years that followed. The documentary will remember the members of our community we lost, reflect on the immediate response of our residents, and tell the story of how Lindenhurst came together in the days, months, and years afterward. It will also document the community’s commitment to never forget—a commitment that led to the creation of the Lindenhurst 9/11 Memorial Garden and continues each year through our annual Candlelight Remembrance Ceremony. We are asking for your help. If you have photographs or videos from any of the following, we would

be grateful if you would consider sharing them with us for possible inclusion in the documentary: • Community candlelight vigil held on the evening of September 12, 2001, at Village Square • LFD/Village/Community relief efforts that supported workers at Ground Zero • Annual Candlelight 9/11 Remembrance Ceremonies • Community fundraising events held to support the creation of the 9/11 Memorial Garden • 2007 Dedication Ceremony of the Lindenhurst 9/11 Memorial Garden • Walk To Remember silent procession from Village Square to the 9/11 Memorial Garden site • Any other photos or videos that capture how Lindenhurst came together to honor, remember, and support one another in the aftermath of September

Every Journey Begins With A Single Step By Kerry Mastrobuoni

very Journey begins with a single step, but it isn’t always the destination that shapes us, It’s the direction we choose each day. That’s why I’ve called this column Kerry’s Compass. A Compass doesn’t tell us how fast to travel or what challenges lie ahead, It simply points us toward true north. It’s been many years since I last put my thoughts on paper. Somewhere between marriage, raising children, work, friendships, family gatherings and keeping up with the beautiful chaos of everyday life, writing quietly found its place on the back burner. Not forgotten, just patiently waiting. Now, as life begins to slow down in the best possible way, it feels like the perfect time to begin writing again. So welcome to Kerry’s Compass. If you know me, you probably know there’s no better place to start than The End - Montauk. There’s a certain magic that begins the moment you cross into town. The air feels different. It’s as if the Atlantic has a way of reminding you to breathe a little deeper. Montauk has changed over the years. It’s no secret that influencers, luxury hotels, and social media have transformed this once-quiet fishing village into one of the East Coast’s trendiest destinations. Prices have climbed right alongside its popularity, and yes, a weekend in peak summer can leave your wallet noticeably lighter.

But here’s the secret seasoned Montauk lovers already know: you can still experience its charm without spending a fortune. Visit midweek, come after Labor Day when the crowds thin, or sneak away during the shoulder season. The beaches are just as breathtaking, the sunsets just as spectacular, and you’ll often discover the Montauk that locals have loved for generations. Some of my favorite memories have been made over long dinners at Duryea’s, where the waterfront views somehow make time stand still. Cocktails at The Crow’s Nest have become a tradition, with its effortless coastal charm and twinkling lights that make every evening feel like summer should never end. And then there’s The Montauket, perched high above the water, where locals and visitors gather together to watch one of the most spectacular sunsets on Long Island. It truly never gets old. Beyond the well-known favorites lies the history that gives Montauk its soul. The iconic Montauk Point Lighthouse that has stood watch since 1796, guiding ships through changing tides for generations. Wander the quiet trails of Camp Hero, explore hidden beaches tucked away from the crowds, or simply take a scenic drive to discover the corners that don’t always make it onto Instagram. Those are often the places that stay with you the longest. That’s what I hope Kerry’s Compass becomes—a place to share destinations worth exploring, hidden gems waiting to be discovered, and stories that remind us why we travel in the first place. here is no definitive age when a child may need to get eyeglasses. However, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthal-mology and Strabismus notes that children’s visual systems are still developing during the first 12 years of their life, and during this period wearing glasses can be important for normal vision development. Glasses can help straighten crossed or misaligned eyes, bolster weak vision caused by differences in vision between a child’s eyes, and even protect the stronger eye. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children begin vision screening around age 3 and receive annual screenings each year at ages 4, 5 and 6. After that, screening is recommended when children turn 8, 10, 12, and 15. Of course, parents who begin to suspect their children are having trouble with their vision are urged to take the child to an ophthalmologist once such suspicions arise. Some notable signs include inexplicable declines in academic performance, children sitting closer to the television than they once did and children’s own remarks regarding their vision if they say anything at all.
