Members of Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Science National Honor Society (SNHS) recently visited Babylon Memorial Grade School to teach fifth-grade students a hands-on lesson titled "Air Really Matters." The visit gave the

schoolers the opportunity to become educators for a day and showcase leadership skills.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that voting on the school district budget for the year 2025/2026 and election of Members of the Board of Education will take place on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 for the transaction of business as authorized by the Education Law by Ballot on Voting Machines or by Paper Ballot, if voting machines are not available or as otherwise provided by Law or Regulation. Shall the school District budget proposed by the Board of Education of the West Babylon Union Free School District for the Fiscal year 2025-2026 requiring the appropriation of the necessary funds to meet the estimated expenditures of the District in accordance with Section 1716 of the Education Law and to authorize the requisite portion thereof to be raised by taxation on the taxable property of the District be adopted.

The three candidates receiving the highest plurality will be elected to the three (3) year term. NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that the Annual Budget Hearing of the West Babylon Union Free School District, Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, New York will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at 6:00 PM, for the transaction of business as authorized by the Education Law including:

1) to present to the voters and discuss the proposed budget and the amount of money which will be required for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

2) such further business as is authorized by the Education Law and acts amendatory thereto.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that pursuant to Chapter 258 of the Laws of 2008, Section 495 was added to the Real Property Tax Law, and requires the School District to attach to its proposed budget an exemption report. Said exemption report, which will also become part of the final budget, will show how much of the total assessed value on the final assessment roll used in the budgetary process is exempt from taxation; list every type of exemption granted, identified by statutory authority, and show: (a) the cumulative impact of each type of exemption expressed either as a dollar amount of assessed value or as a percentage of the total assessed value on the roll: (b) the cumulative amount expected to be received from recipients of each type of exemption as payments in lieu of taxes or other payments for municipal services; and (c) the cumulative impact of all exemptions granted. NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025/2026 will be prepared and will be available at each school building and at the West Babylon School District Office, school district Library and on the website (www.wbschools.org) no later than fourteen (14) days before the vote.

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that petitions nominating candidates for the office of Member of Board of Education must be filed with the Clerk of the District at her office, at 10 Farmingdale Road, West Babylon, New York 11704, no later than on or before 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on or before April 21, 2025. Each petition must be directed to the Clerk of the District and shall state the name and residence of the candidate and the length of term of the office and the names of the last incumbents, as set forth above. The School Board will not entertain any petition to place a proposition before the voters which is not within the powers of the voters to determine, which is unlawful, or any proposition which fails to include a specific appropriation where the expenditure of monies is required by the proposition, or where other valid reason exists for excluding the proposition from the ballot.

AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that personal registration of voters is required and no person shall be entitled to vote at said meeting and election whose name does not already appear on the register of said school district, or who does not register as hereinafter provided.

Military voters who are qualified voters of the district may submit an application for a military ballot. Military ballots must be received by the District Clerk (1) before the close of polls, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 and must show a cancellation mark of the United States postal service or a foreign Country’s postal service, or must show a dated endorsement of receipt by another agency of the United States Government; or (2) not later than 5:00 P.M. on the day of the election and be signed and dated by the military voter and one witness, with a date ascertained to be not later than the day before the election.

The Average Individual Is Retiring Earlier Than Many People Might Expect

According to a recent Gallup’s Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement

age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports

the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t

have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

Passover

is a Jewish celebration and one of the religion’s most sacred and widely observed holidays. Passover commemorates the Biblical story of the Israelites’ escape from 400 years of slavery in Egypt. In 2025, Passover takes place at sundown on Saturday, April 12 to Sunday, April 20, 2025. Pesach, as Passover is known in Hebrew, includes all kinds of ceremonial foods. The Passover seder plate showcases specific items that relate to both the suffering and emancipation of the Jewish people. Throughout Passover, the faithful abstain from any leavened bread products. According to Exodus 12:8: “They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat.” Jews also are to remove all leaven (hametz) from their homes and eat unleavened bread for an additional seven days. Apart from being commanded by God, it is believed unleavened bread became traditional Passover food because the Jewish people departed Egypt in haste without time to let bread rise. Furthermore, some say God also associated leavened bread with sin. If there is one ingredient Passover celebrants may find challenging to work with during the holiday, it could be unleavened bread. Typically matzoh/matzah is substituted for other yeasted breads this time of year. One place matzoh really shines, though, is in matzoh balls for use in soups or side dishes. A dumpling of sorts, matzoh balls are tasty and filling, and ideal for meals throughout Passover. Try this recipe for “Perfect Matzah Balls (Kneidlach)” courtesy of Chabad.org’s Kosher Cooking.

Town Of Babylon Warns Residents About Scammers Posing As

The Town of Babylon is reminding residents to be vigilant after reports of scammers posing as town employees to gain access to homes. All official Town of Babylon employees carry government-issued ID badges and will always present them upon request.

Residents should never allow anyone claiming to be a Town worker into their home without first verifying their identity. If there is any doubt, residents can call 311 to confirm whether an individual is a legitimate Town employee.

“We take the safety of our residents very seriously,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “No one should feel pressured to let a stranger into their home. If you have any concerns, ask for ID and call 311—we are happy to verify any Town employee’s credentials.”

The Town urges residents to take the following precautions:

• Ask to see ID – All official Town employees will carry Town-issued identification.

• Verify legitimacy –Call 311 to confirm if someone is a Town employee.

• Report suspicious activity

– If someone refuses

Town Employees

to show ID or seems suspicious, do not let them in and call local law enforcement immediately.

This warning follows a recent incident in which a West Babylon resident was scammed and burglarized by individuals falsely claiming to be Town workers. The Town of Babylon encourages residents to stay informed and share this message with friends and neighbors.

Street Renaming - Salvatore Giulio Rubino Memorial Way

The corner of 4th Street and 12th Avenue in West Babylon has been ceremoniously renamed Salvatore Giulio Rubino Memorial Way.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terence McSweeney attended the renaming ceremony on Monday, March 13 surrounded by Salvatore’s family and friends.

Born in Italy, Salvatore immigrated to the U.S. in 1966 at just 17. Drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War, he showed immense bravery—surviving a lifethreatening chest wound, enduring months of recovery, and completing

his full two-year service before becoming a proud U.S. citizen.

Beyond his military heroism, Salvatore dedicated 30 years to his community, worked tirelessly, and never hesitated to help others— saving a man from choking after a bicycle accident and performing the Heimlich maneuver on a woman in distress. Though his war injuries left him with lifelong complications, his spirit remained unbreakable.

In October 2021, we lost this remarkable man, but his legacy of selflessness and bravery will live on forever.

Town Of Babylon Announces Irish American Heritage Month

During a recent board meeting, Town of Babylon officials recognized March as Irish-American Heritage Month.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer presented a Proclamation to the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 2 of Babylon commemorating this. Supervisor Schaffer said, “This month serves as an opportunity to honor the invaluable contributions

of our Irish ancestors and those who carry on their traditions, highlighting the deep-rooted connections between Ireland and the United States.”

Councilman Terence McSweeney who brought this resolution to the board said, “This is a time to celebrate the profound impact of Irish culture across various fields, including the arts, sciences, music, sports, politics, and business. The hard work and commitment of the Irish community have greatly enriched our society and helped shape the nation we know today.”

As you walk by town hall, you will see the cupola illuminated in green, symbolizing the celebration of this important month.
