Amityville Memorial High School Students Tour HBCU Programs

Students from Amityville Memorial High School recently visited seven schools in North Carolina during the school’s annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities Tour.

Track and field coach Reynolds Hawkins, high school Dean of Students Natasha Lim, Guidance Director Dr. Stephanie

Thomas, and high school teacher Nakia Williams accompanied 33 high school students on the annual college tour. During tours of the campuses, students learned about admissions requirements, academic programs, extracurricular activities and sports, residential life, scholarship opportunities

and tuition and fees. They interacted with current college students and experienced the culture of each campus. Students also had the opportunity to visit the International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro.

“I always put some sort of historical twist into this tour,” said Hawkins,

who helped to launch the program 15 years ago.

Hawkins, who was then a social worker at the high school, pitched the idea about the program to the district’s administrators as an initiative to keep students actively involved. “We’re the only high school on Long Island to have a tour exclusively for HBCU schools,” Hawkins said. “As an Amityville graduate and an HBCU graduate, this was a great opportunity for me to show students that there are other places to go outside of New York.”

This year, students also visited Duke University and Queens University of Charlotte. At Duke, students met with former Athletic Director Kevin White, who is an Amityville Memorial High School graduate. At Queens University, the group met

Veterans Share Their Stories

In honor of Veterans Day, Amityville Memorial High School and Edmund W. Miles Middle School held Veterans Day events to celebrate the brave men and women who have served or are currently serving in the United States military.

Local veterans in the community were welcomed to the middle school on Nov. 9 to share their experiences while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Prior to the event, students prepared

questions in their social studies classes to ask the veterans. Veterans described the branch of military in which they served, answered the students’ questions, and displayed photos and souvenirs from their years of service. Toward the end of the visit, students asked for the veterans’ autographs and thanked them for visiting the class. Each veteran received a patriotic thank-you card created by a member of the National Junior Honor

Society.

At the high school, several local veterans were welcomed to speak with students in their social studies classes on Nov. 10. During the 45-minute class period, veterans shared stories about their time in the service and answered students’ questions. Students created colorful cards to thank the veterans for their service. Additionally, veterans got to enjoy a special luncheon in the school’s library.

The Amityville Union Free School District congratulates the Amityville Memorial High School Warriors varsity soccer team on winning their third New York State championship.

On Nov. 13, the Warriors defeated the Beacon High School Bulldogs 4-0 to win the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A championship at Middletown High School. The game was highlighted by the performance of senior striker Hugo Rodriguez, who finished the game with two goals and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Matthew Katz also played an outstanding game with five saves to secure a clean sheet. Led by the coaching staff of head coach Michael Abbondondolo and assistant coaches Chris Gannon, Greg McCoy, Michael Abbondondolo Sr. and Berten George, the Warriors

Warriors Soccer Team Captures Their Third New York State Championship

finished their remarkable season with a record of 201-1 and were ranked 16th in the nation. The Warriors also became five-time Suffolk County and Long Island champions, and they won their seventh consecutive league title.

Last year, the Warriors made it to all the way to the New York State championship where they lost to Somers High School. The Warriors graduated some impact players in the Class of 2022 who went to schools such as Boston College, Queens College and St. Joseph’s University.

“This year, we were poised to be ready to get back there and win it all,” Mr. Abbondondolo said. “We already had a tough league schedule ahead of us and we also put together a tough non-League schedule to best prepare ourselves to be our best version at the end of the season when it matters most.

Through many challenges, we were able to navigate the season in a way where we learned great lessons while still getting results.”

The Warriors faced teams from New York City along with Westtown School, a preparatory school in Pennsylvania. They played Westtown in Albany during the middle of the season in the NXT LVL Invitational Showcase where the game finished in a 0-0 draw. The showcase featured more than 20 college coaches. In addition to having a challenging non-League schedule, the Warriors’ league schedule was just as tough.

Mr. Abbondondolo said that their major turning point was towards the end of the regular season when they played undefeated John Glenn High School in league play on Oct. 12 and Senior Day on Oct. 14 against Kings Park High

School, a competitive playoff team. Then, in less than 24 hours, the Warriors traveled to Randall’s Island to play Martin Luther King High School who won the City Championship and is ranked eighth in the nation.

“We designed the schedule to truly find ourselves, and we did,” Mr. Abbondondolo said.

Mr. Abbondondolo added that the only “blemishes”

on the Warriors’ remarkable season record was their tie to Westtown and a loss to MLK. Once the playoffs began, the team never looked back as they outscored their opponents 22-3.

“In the playoffs, the team, community and everyone in Amityville really rose to the occasion as our path through the playoffs was a memorable one,” Mr. Abbondondolo said. “We are

so proud of all the effort put forth by the boys and their dedication to each other. We are so happy we could represent Amityville in a way that everyone can be proud of. There is a lot of pride in the program, and we are thrilled to bring the state championship back home.”

The district congratulates the Warriors on capping off another historic season with a state title.

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

Children & Youth: Their Children & Youth services work deeply with children who are victims of child abuse and neglect or who are involved in the foster care system or child trafficking. They provide supervised visitation between noncustodial parents and their children, promote child passenger safety and offer mentors for at-risk youth.

Family & Community: EAC Network’s Family and Community programs help individuals pay bills, resolve family and business conflicts and navigate through obstacles that hinder selfsufficiency.

Senior & Nutrition Services: EAC Network is a provider of Meals on Wheels. They act as guardians for seniors, as well as mentally and/or physically incapacitated individuals, who are unable to manage aspects of daily life on their own. Their senior centers provide warm meals, exercise and social interaction to local seniors. They also offer technology classes as well as trained companions to relieve caregivers.

Vocational Services: Their Vocational Services offer a variety of programs that provide participants with skills to obtain and retain employment, particularly with at-risk populations.

Behavioral Health & Criminal Justice Services: They offer Behavioral Health programs that work in tandem with the criminal justice system to help

individuals suffering from mental health and/ or substance abuse issues obtain treatment. They also offer programs for Anger Management, Community Service and educational intervention for domestic violence offenders, and more.

Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they serve over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County!

There are so many ways that you can get involved with EAC Network, whether it be through an internship or volunteer position, attending an event, making a donation or fundraising. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about how you can make a difference in your community.

The Town of Babylon initiated its Chamber of Commerce Collaborative with a meeting on Thursday, November 10 between the executive board members of various chambers of commerce located throughout the Town. This new initiative aims to bring together the common interest of the Town’s chambers to launch joint events and programming, including events with the SBA, throughout the year with the ultimate goal of enhancing small business growth and generating more networking opportunities.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and as revitalization continues to be a priority within the Town, it is imperative that we collaborate with one another to maximize benefits for local businesses,” said Town of Babylon Councilman and Small Business Committee Chairman Anthony Manetta. “The Chamber Collaborative

effort will bring together new ideas, help to solve common problems and serve as a thinktank to bolster the growth of small businesses in the Town of Babylon.”

The Town of Babylon Chamber Collaborative also serves to produce a dialogue of shared ideas and improvement between the chambers. Part of these discussions includes how to increase membership and small business participation and drive new revenue growth for members.

U.S. Postal Service Issues New Hanukkah Forever Stamp

With the release of this vibrant new stamp, the U.S. Postal Service continues its tradition of issuing stamps for the Hanukkah celebrations.

This joyous Jewish holiday commemorates the liberation and reconsecration of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century B.C. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah is a time for family and friends to come together to rejoice.

A dedication ceremony for the stamp was held recently at Temple Emanu El.

“I remember looking forward to Hanukkah as a child, especially the traditional foods, gifts, and games,” said Lori Dym, U.S. Postal Service managing counsel for procurement and property law, who served as the dedicating official. “And now, on behalf of the 655,000 men and women of the United States Postal

Service, I am honored to participate in the unveiling of our new stamp celebrating this joyous Jewish holiday.”

Dym was joined by Susan Krantz, president of Temple Emanu El; Rabbi Matt Cohen; Jeanette Kuvin Oren, the stamp’s designer and artist; Kathy Mulcahy, mayor of Orange Village, OH; and Darcy Hershey, congregant and administrative assistant at Temple Emanu El.

“Temple Emanu El is honored that the United States Postal Service approached our congregation to host the first-day-of-issue ceremony for the launch of the 2022 Chanukah Stamp,” said Krantz. “We are proud that in selecting Temple Emanu El, the USPS recognized our long-standing passion for social justice which is deeply embedded in our traditions. Our congregants care about the world around us and engage in the ongoing work of helping to improve the world in which we live. Our temple is a Jewish institution of connection, gathering, learning and practicing spiritual life. Working together we bring meaning to our lives and to the lives of others.”

“The miracle of Hanukkah came early this year (kind of)!” said Cohen. “While our Hanukkah menorahs are not

yet kindled, this communal celebration reminds us that despite all odds, throughout time and history, the lights of the Jewish people have miraculously continued to grow brightly and illuminate the world with wholeness, blessing, and peace. Our Temple Emanu El family is honored to host this event and to welcome our friends from the Greater Cleveland Community into our sacred home.”

Hanukkah means “dedication” in Hebrew. The story of Hanukkah begins with the victory of the Maccabees, an army of Jewish fighters, over the forces of Hellenic emperor Antiochus IV, whose supporters had desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem by building an altar to the Greek god Zeus.

After reclaiming the Temple and preparing to rededicate the holy space, the worshippers discovered that only one small jar of consecrated oil remained — enough to last one day.

Rather than wait for more oil to arrive, they lit the Temple menorah, which miraculously burned for eight days.

The miracle of the oil is celebrated with the ceremonial lighting of the hanukkiah, the nine-branch candelabra used only at Hanukkah. The hanukkiah, also called menorah, holds eight candles, one for each night of Hanukkah, plus one known as the “shamash,” which means the servant or helper candle used to light the others.

The candle for the first night is put on the far-right side of the menorah. On each subsequent night, an additional candle is placed to the immediate left of the previous night’s candle. The candles are lit from left to right, so that the lighting begins with the newest candle.

A family-centered holiday, Hanukkah celebrations usually take place in people’s homes, with games, songs, gifts and feasting. Traditional fried foods include latkes — potato pancakes — and doughnuts called sufganiyot.

“I want these kids to see people that have gone through the same route that they have and realize that they can accomplish great things as well,” Hawkins said.

More than 90% of the high school students who took part in this tour have attended college, according to Hawkins. “I’d like to thank the

district for supporting this program and financing the annual trip through the years,” Hawkins said. “The feedback from the kids, the parents and the

community have all been positive, so I hope that we can continue this program beyond my time here in Amityville.”

The stamp art features the design from an original wall-hanging. The fiber art was hand-dyed, appliquéd and quilted to form an abstract image of a hanukkiah.

The blue and purple colors are used to represent the sky, the greens and browns represent the earth. The bright yellows and oranges represent the Festival of Lights, as Hanukkah is also known. Along the bottom of the stamp, the words Hanukkah, Forever and USA appear in white capital letters.

Pattersqaush Creek Invasive Removal & Native Planting Volunteer Opportunity In Mastic Beach

Invasive species are choking out the native flora in our woodlands and wetlands. You can see this in Mastic Beach, all along Pattersquash Creek where the multiflora rose is crowding out the local summersweet and highbush blueberry. Japanese honeysuckle, Japanese barberry and morning glory — all invasive species — weave an impenetrable bramble that cause the native serviceberry and chokeberry to struggle. Invasive plants add no value to our local ecology whereas native plants help nourish our soil and support a host of bugs, birds and mammals important to the local ecology, according to Mike Lovell, a local volunteer.

Meshenberg will be leading up an invasive plant removal along the Pattersquash Creek and replacing them with native plants. This project is being done in collaboration with the Pattersquash Creek Civic Association, the Mastic Beach Conservancy, and volunteers in accordance with DEC guidelines. All volunteers are welcome to join in this expansive effort. This is a muddy job so

please dress appropriately for muck – waders or tall waterproof boots, if you have them, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty!

LIPA Announces New Community College Scholarship

Officials from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) joined with representatives from Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College to announce a new community college scholarship program. The LIPA Scholarship is designed to provide education and training for students from households with incomes below the median income of Long Island and the Rockaways (approximately $100,000 for a family of four) living in historically underserved communities.

The LIPA Scholarship is a $350,000 commitment over the next five years to provide 50 full scholarships for students to attend either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College to obtain an associate degree or certificate that will help them pursue a career in the electric utility or clean energy sectors.

This investment is an effort to ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all of our customers can participate in the growing career opportunities available in the electric utility and clean energy industry.

Thomas Falcone, Chief Executive Officer of LIPA, said: “Electricity is the clean fuel of the future. Studies predict electricity will provide more than 70 percent of New York’s energy needs by 2050 and that it will be entirely carbon-free. The curricula offered at Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College include courses relevant to the work LIPA does to meet the clean energy goals set by New York’s Climate Act, as well as to fulfill LIPA’s mission of providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Long Island and the Rockaways.

The LIPA Scholarship will support income-qualified, graduating high school seniors, allowing them to extend their educational development and enter the utility and clean energy sectors. Participation in the LIPA Scholarship will provide graduates with a competitive edge in applying for employment at LIPA and its contractor, PSEG Long Island, who plan to hire hundreds of entry-level workers over the next five years.

This five-year program will provide annual funding for ten full-time, two-year scholarships for low- to moderate-income students who reside in disadvantaged communities, as identified by New York’s Climate Justice Working Group, planning to attend Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College. The alumni awards recognize exceptional achievements of West Babylon graduates who have made significant contributions to their profession/society & community. The nominees must be out of high school for a minimum of 5 years. There is also a category for a nongraduate who has made significant contributions to the betterment of the WB School District and
