Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services
Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.
The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.
One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.
“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to
promote emotional and psychological release through creative
movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”
Additionally, the program offers nutrition and fitness workshops focusing on healthy lifestyle choices. If you would like more information about this program, please visit www. helenkeller.org.
Don’t forget, this entire month is designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. $260,000 Funding Award Presented To The Village Of Amityville
Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) was proud to present a $260,000 grant to the Village of Amityville in support of the Amityville Fire and Police Departments.
The funding award allowed the Amityville Fire Department to replace obsolete inventory through the purchase of new Motorola APX 8000 radios to outfit every apparatus with stateof-the-art multifrequency portable radios – a necessary step for maintaining communication capabilities with multiple agencies from across the island.
Additionally, the grant allowed the Village of Amityville to purchase three new vehicles – one to be utilize by the Amityville Police Department, and two electric cars that will used by the building department and code enforcement staff as they make their rounds on inspections and quality of life tours in the Village. These new energy-saving vehicles will free up existing vehicles for other departments’ uses.
Said Senator Brooks, “I am proud to have been able to present this funding award to Mayor Dennis Siry, on behalf of
the Village of Amityville. I see all of the great work that goes on in this community, so I am always thrilled when I am able to support their mission of continuing to provide quality public service to all the residents of Amityville.”
