Amityville Memorial High School Celebrates International Day Of Peace

On Sept. 21, Amityville Memorial High School commemorated the International Day of Peace by presenting its annual Pinwheels for Peace event.

Through song, poetry, peace rock presentations and a pinwheel planting

ceremony, students reflected on the importance of peace in their lives, their community and throughout the world. To prepare for this event, high school art students created more than 200 pinwheels and decorated them with peace-

themed art and personal messages of peace. Many peace-themed posters were also created for this celebration.

Additionally, students in the high school’s Warrior Awareness Club, known as the WAC PAC, wrote poetry

and created “Peace Rocks” to distribute to individuals who have great meaning within their lives. During the celebration, students created a human Unity Circle and then “planted” their pinwheels to form a peace sign of pinwheels on the school’s front lawn.

The International Day of Peace (Peace Day) is observed around the world each year on Sept. 21. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace. The International Day of Peace ceremony at Amityville Memorial High School was organized by art teacher Jayne Grasso and the National Art Honor Society, along with support from Director of Fine Arts Dr. Fran Fernandez.

14th Annual TangerFit 5K Walk

On Sunday, October 16th Tanger Outlets in Deer Park will be holding their 14th Annual TangerFit 5K Walk benefitting the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC). Please join us for a fabulous day, all proceeds help fund the BBCC’s Lend a Helping Hand program which assists local Township of Babylon women and their families in active treatment for breast and/or gynecological cancer. Dominican Village’s Fall Frenzy Auction

Plans are well underway for Dominican Village’s annual Fall Frenzy Auction (formerly known as the Chinese Auction Extravaganza).

There will be countless raffle baskets with separate raffles for “gold prizes” including flat-screen TVs, designer handbags/wallets, lottery trees, gift cards, and more. The event will also include a wine grab raffle.

Register early for the dinner auction to be held Friday, November 4th from

6:00 – 10:00 p.m. located on the grounds of Dominican Village in the Helen Butler Hall. The general public is invited to view and submit raffle chances on Thursday, November 3rd, and on the same day of the main event, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Helen Butler Hall. Winners need not be present.

It takes several months for a group of exceptional volunteers to coordinate, wrap, and record the many baskets for raffles, so we

are asking our friends and supporters for the following new items large baskets, children’s bikes, board games, gift cards, wine, and mystery gifts.

2022 Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival

At Hempstead Lake State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are pleased to announce the Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival will be held at Hempstead Lake State Park, on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00AM – 4:00PM

The fishing license requirement for all anglers over the age of 16 is suspended for this festival and admission and parking are free. Festival activities include fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services to all participants. A “Casting for Pumpkins” event for children will be provided

by the Seaford Knights of Columbus. Activities are provided by I FISH NY and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Corporate sponsors include Renewal by Andersen of Long Island, New York Life and Veolia.

Prior to the festival, South and McDonald Ponds will be stocked with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. The high concentration of stocked trout should provide a great opportunity to introduce your family to the wonderful sport of freshwater fishing. In addition to fishing opportunities, there will be a wildlife show, magic performance, and much more.

Annual Jake K Foundation Zombie Run!

The Jake K Foundation (JKF) is pleased to announce our 2022 annual “Zombie Run” to be held on Saturday, October 8th at Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon. Join us for the Zombie Run 5k, a run or walk to benefit the Jake Koenigsdorf Foundation (the JKF)“Reducing the barriers to recovery.”  Run with us in person on race day, or join us from anywhere in the world by using our virtual option.

The Mission of JKF is to bridge the gap for those affected and effected by Substance Use Disorder (Addiction) who are ready and willing to seek a solution. We are closing the gaps in the recovery road through education, connection, while providing resources to those without access to resources. Funds donated to JKF are used to

support entry funding and transportation to recovery facilities that use a peer community model that teaches a solution that have a program duration of four months or longer.

People in active drug and alcohol addiction will do damage to their families, end up in an institution, in jail, die, or they work to build recovery. We create opportunities for people to take their lives back.

Participants will receive a long sleeve race t-shirt with our zombie race logo. Awards will go to the top overall male and female

runners, plus the top winners in age groups.

“Not Dead Yet” Zombie Costume Contest. Think you got what it takes to be the greatest zombie in the bunch?  Wear your finest Zombie garb to the event!  Our panel of undead experts will pick their favorites and award $50 Amazon gift cards to the six best costumes.  Criteria for winning will be determined by the panel, based on which costumes make us laugh, cry, scare us, or binge watch the Walking Dead.

In the consumer focused, internet age, we can choose the coverage we want. Seldom, however, do our needs remain the same from year to year. The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

October is a month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways.

October 14 is World Sight Day, which focuses on public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues to influence funding for national blindness prevention and to educate about blindness prevention.

October 15 is White Cane Day, established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to raise awareness of people who carry a white cane, to help motorists identify and yield to people using one and to create legal penalties for not doing so.

Additionally, the entire month of October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities, past and present, and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Taken together, a common goal of these intersecting events is to raise the level of appreciation for people who do not have full use of their sight, yet overcome daily challenges to live and be treated equally alongside their sighted brothers and sisters.

Helen Keller Services (HKS) is a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation. Since 1893, they have been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are blind, have low vision or combined hearing and vision loss. Their mission is to enable individuals who are blind, DeafBlind, have vision loss, or hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in the communities of their choice.
