Lung Association Launches First LUNG FORCE Walk

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths on Long Island –and throughout the U.S. In an effort to end lung cancer, the American Lung Association is launching its first ever LUNG FORCE Walk Long Island at Eisenhower Park on October 7, 2023. LUNG FORCE initiative unites those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers to stand together against lung cancer. LUNG FORCE Walks happen all around the county as celebratory and welcoming events that provides critical funds for lifesaving lung cancer research, early detection initiatives and awareness. The New York City Walk, which took place in May, saw more than 1,000 people participate, raising over $275,000.

“The Long Island community has been deeply impacted by Lung Cancer, and many Long Island residents have joined us for events in Manhattan and the Hudson Valley. Nicole Sturiano, a resident of Ridge, New York and captain of Team Jeanine has helped raise over $50,000 and has participated in the New York City LUNG FORCE Walk since its inception in 2015. She said, “My sister, Jeanine, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at only 42 years old. After just two years of fighting the toughest battle of her life, Jeanine passed away on December 1, 2015. Our team has been walking to carry on the legacy of my sister, to advance the effort to find a cure, and to bring awareness to lung cancer. I hope one day to see a world free of lung cancer so that no one has to suffer the way my sister did, and no one has to lose their loved one to lung cancer.”

The Value Of Activity-Driven Fundraisers

Fundraising is vital to the survival of many nonprofit organizations. Charity watchdog groups like Charity Navigator suggest nonprofits should aspire to spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising. That can be a tall task and underscores the need for charities to find creative, cost-effective ways to raise funds.

Nonprofit organizations raise funds in various ways. Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving to charity tends to increase, such as the holiday season. Activity-driven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective.

What are activity-driven

fundraisers?

Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activity-driven fundraiser

that annually attracts sizable numbers of participants and donors. Are activity-driven fundraisers effective?

The sheer volume of activity-driven fundraisers makes it more difficult to gauge the success of these events. However, a recent study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people are inclined to contribute more when the experience is painful and labor-intensive. That suggests that activitydriven fundraisers like charity runs can be highly effective and lucrative ways to raise money. Indeed, various estimates suggest the Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million worldwide.

Nonprofit organizations raise funds in myriad ways. Activity-driven fundraisers are among the more engaging, and often successful, ways to raise money for a good cause.

The Wall That Heals To Visit The Town Of Babylon Exhibit Spreads The Healing Legacy Of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

From October 5 to 8, the Town of Babylon will proudly host the traveling exhibit The Wall That Heals at Tanner Park. The traveling exhibit is a ¾ replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. that pays tribute to over three million Americans who served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. A smaller replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall similar to this exhibit drew thousands to Town Hall back in 1995. The Town of Babylon is fundraising in coordination with the event and already surpassed its $20,000 goal, now exceeding $40,000.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to continue supporting our veterans and provide access to this powerful piece of history to all of our residents,” said

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “We hope that this monument not only provides solace and strength but learning and growth as well.”

The Wall That Heals has already aided thousands of veterans in their healing process, empowering them to encounter The Wall in the familiarity of their own communities. It also serves as an important source of peace for family and friends of veterans, as well as an educational tool. The exhibit will be escorted from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum to Tanner Park on October 3 and assembled on October 4. The Wall That Heals will then be open from the morning of October 5 to 1:45 p.m. on October 8, when it will be deconstructed. Two ceremonies will take place at the site as well: the Welcome Home Ceremony on October 5 at 4:00 p.m. and Purple Heart Ceremony, in which

a purple heart will be buried and a candlelight vigil held, on October 6 at 6:00 p.m.

“Our Town is incredibly proud to host The Wall That Heals,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “I would like to give a special thanks to Charles Spencer as cochair for his key role in bringing the exhibit to our community, as well as to everyone who made this possible. I encourage all of our residents to experience this impactful monument and all of the meaning it holds.”

Get Ready For Medicare Open Enrollment Season Free Medicare Open Enrollment Assistance Through FCA

Medicare is a federally run health insurance program for people who are 65 years of age or have collected Social Security Disability for 24 months. It is also available for individuals with permanent kidney failure or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

If you are not yet collecting Social Security, you have to apply for Medicare during the three month period before your 65th birthday. You may apply for Medicare by calling the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 or on-line at: https://www. ssa.gov/medicare/. If you are already collecting Social Security, you will

receive your Medicare card automatically in the mail.

Medicare beneficiaries have the opportunity to change their current health plan during the yearly Open Enrollment period

(October 15 to December

7). Navigating Medicare and choosing a plan that best meets your needs can be tricky. Our health care needs change over time, so you should carefully consider your foreseeable health care needs each year. A plan that worked for us previously may not be the best choice going forward.

As we head into the Medicare Open Enrollment season, it is important for people to read mail from their current health plans to see if there are any changes that might impact them for 2024. You should have this notice by October 1. Plans frequently change their premiums, co-pays, deductibles, and formularies. Providers may leave or be added to a plan’s network. It is important to keep informed about your

coverage. The Medicare & You 2024 booklet, which arrives in homes of all eligible for Medicare by late September, contains valuable information about Medicare benefits and a description of changes for next year. Medicare beneficiaries should review their coverage during the Open Enrollment period to determine if their current coverage is still the right one for them.

Medicare beneficiaries who are in a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO) and don’t change their plan by December 7th will have an additional opportunity to switch Medicare Advantage plans between January 1 and March 31.

Preservation Long Island Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary With Special Events And Programs Through December 2023

Preservation Long Island is delighted to announce its 75th year in operation as the only regional notfor-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation on geographic Long Island. From events and exhibitions to preservation advocacy and on-site student education, their wide-ranging programs connect Long Islanders to the region’s diverse and distinctive past.

To help celebrate this 75th Anniversary milestone, special events are planned including, a new exhibition, and redesigned house tours and special programs at Preservation Long Island’s historic properties across Long Island.

Originally founded in 1948 as the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, the organization adopted Preservation Long Island as a new name in 2017 to communicate more plainly its commitment to advancing the importance of preserving all facets of the region’s history through advocacy, education, and stewardship of historic

sites and collections.

Preservation Long Island’s approach to historic preservation on Long island is comprehensive and includes:

• Interpreting three Preservation Long Island owned historic sites in Suffolk County.

• Providing free advisory services in communities across Long Island for individuals and groups engaged in local preservation efforts. Advocacy work includes the Endangered Historic Places Program and Preservation Awards.

Museum & Education Center, Blanket Statements explores Long Island’s early textile industry and the broader historical events that shaped its growth during the first half of the nineteenth century.

Historic House Tours

After a two-year hiatus and the enlistment of a new interpretive team of Museum Educators, along with a cadre of trained volunteers, all three Preservation Long Island owned historic properties in Suffolk County will be open for the season beginning in June with redesigned tours offered through October 2023. Each site

preserves extraordinary examples of early American architecture and design. Tours are free for Preservation Long Island Members and $5-$10 for general admission tickets.

Dementia Conversations Event Takes Place Oct. 3

In partnership with The Bristal Assisted Living, the Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will be holding an in-person event called “Dementia Conversations” on Tuesday, October 3 from 6:30-7:30 p.m at The Bristal in West Babylon. Often, conversations with family about changing behaviors can be challenging and uncomfortable. This program provides tips for families to address some of the most common issues that are difficult to discuss. Common issues that we will be discussing include going to a doctor for a

diagnosis, deciding when to stop driving and making legal and financial plans for future care

“When someone is showing signs of dementia, it is important for a family to address the changes that are happening to your loved one,” said Alaina Nathan, Program Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter. “We are here to provide the Long Island community the resources that you need to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia.”
