Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Seth Platte Purdy Jr. Seth Platte Purdy Jr., a lifetime resident of Amityville, LI., died August 9, 2022 in Sunrise Assisted Living of West Babylon, LI., he was 93 years old. Seth was born in Amityville on May 25, 1929 to Seth Platt, Sr., and Ethel M. (Noble) Purdy. Seth was a retired schoolteacher from the Amityville schools, the long time curator of the Amityville Historical society, lifetime member of Simpson United Methodist Church where he held many positions including Superintendent of the Sunday School, Organist, Trustee, Men’s club president as well as many other committees, he was a member of the Amityville Masonic Lodge and one of the oldest alumni of Adelphi University and recognized by the community for his service with many organizations. Seth is predeceased by his parents, his brother Andrew and his sister Arlene Syrett. Survivors include his niece Karen Bailey (Lee), and nephew David M. Syrett (Rose M.), great nieces aand nephews Jennifer Fioranelli (Phillip) Stephen Bailey, Megan E. Schulze, Lauren M. Bender (Tammy) and Ashley R. Syrett and great nephews Brady and Jackson Schulze. A Masonic Service was held on Thursday evening, August 11th followed by prayers by the Reverend Akio Iyoda, pastor of Simpson United Methodist Church. Pastor Ioyda conducted the funeral service at the funeral home the next day followed by interment in Amityville Cemetery. About Long Island’s Own Buddy Merriam: Buddy Merriam and Back Roads were formed in 1980 out of Buddy’s love and respect for traditional Bluegrass music. He became close friends with the Father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, and got to learn from and eventually perform with him. In September of 2015 Buddy was honored to receive the “Long Island Sound Award” from the LI Music Hall of Fame “For Outstanding Contributions to Long Island’s Musical Heritage.” He has brought Back Roads down to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to perform a few times, and they’ve also performed at the grand opening of the Bluegrass Museum and Hall of Fame in Owensboro, KY and Country Music’s Fan Fair in Nashville, TN. The group has played at most of the Bluegrass Festivals in the northeastern U.S., including Grey Fox and Podunk, and at several Long Island venues, such as Hecksher Park in Huntington, Bald Hill Cultural Center, Agawam Park in Southampton, and has headlined concerts for LITMA (the Long Island Traditional Music Association), the Huntington Folk Music Society and the Museums at Stony Brook Folk & Fiddle Festival. Buddy Merriam’s involvement in the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival dates back to its beginnings. He has graced the stage at Tanner Park many times throughout the festival’s 20 years, and is a crowd favorite whenever he plays.
