High School Students Tour Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University’s College of Business, in partnership with the Career Center, recently welcomed 30 Amityville Memorial High School students to their campus. Students learned about education and career opportunities in business and accounting during their campus tour. Additionally, they received an admissions overview and attended a networking session and luncheon with business students and Stony Brook’s Accounting Advisory Board.

“The College of Business is committed to supporting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives by providing this access and knowledge to local students,” said Amy Milligan, assistant dean for curriculum, accreditation and student services in the College of Business. “Amityville Memorial High School has a robust business

program, and bringing these students to Stony Brook provides knowledge about the possibilities available to them in their own backyard.”

AAB members introduced their firms during a pizza lunch and then collectively spoke about exciting career opportunities in the profession, the types of candidates that firms seek to hire, and what students can do now to help determine their future education and career path. AAB panel participants included representatives of KPMG, BDO USA, LLP, Cerini & Associates, PwC, and Protiviti Inc. The College of Business students also shared their Stony Brook experiences, and the panel discussed potential career paths and the pipeline for a diverse and welltrained workforce in the accounting profession.

Jacquelyn Bello, a KPMG employee, spoke about how her college experience enabled her to enter the field.

“I got into KPMG through an internship opportunity I had while I was at Stony Brook,” said Bello, an audit growth senior associate

at KPMG. “You’ve heard some speakers talk of various career paths that led to accounting careers. My career opportunity came straight from this campus.”

“I believe that it is important that our students know of the educational opportunities

that are available locally at a reasonable low cost on Long Island,” said Amityville business educator Dr. Diane Impagliazzo. “Stony Brook has a quality program, and I am so happy that some of our students were able to get exposure to the campus.

Our students’ faces lit up when we toured the campus.”

Dr. Impagliazzo agreed that the campus tour was a tremendous success and that it was an excellent way for Amityville students to learn about the educational paths that Stony Brook has to offer.

Strong communities are able to thrive thanks to the efforts of their residents, including those who give up their free time to volunteer with local charitable organizations. Though the impact of volunteers is often seen through the lens of the projects they help to initiate and complete, there’s no denying just how valuable

The Impact Of Volunteers

volunteers are from an economic standpoint. In its 2018 “Volunteering in America Report,” AmeriCorps, an organization dedicated to strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, reported that Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours worth an estimated $167 billion in

2017. Volunteering figures to be even more valuable in the months and years ahead as towns, cities and countries look to recover from a global pandemic that claimed millions of lives and devastated economies big and small. As the world attempts to rebuild itself once the pandemic has ended, volunteers can play vital roles in reestablishing

their communities. In fact, many people have already made that recognition. According to data from the professional social networking site LinkedIn, the site’s users had added more than 110,00 volunteer activities to their profiles between the early stages of the pandemic in 2020 and the end of summer 2020.

Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum Announces 2023 Event Schedule

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds, unique architectural monuments, flowing bronze fountains and world-class arboreta, announces its 2023 event schedule.

Included in the calendar are the park’s many educational outdoor programs that celebrate the importance of various beloved insect species including ladybugs and honey bees, and the vital role they play in the environment.

For the first time, Pinelawn will also host Jazz Under the Stars honoring some of the great jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn, including John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, Guy Lombardo and The Royal Canadians.

Pinelawn’s Arboretum, which was awarded Level II status from the International Arboretum Accreditation Program, ArbNet, is comprised of three distinct collections including the Noteworthy Collection, the Primary

Collection and the General Collection. The Noteworthy Collection includes the Arboretum’s highest quality and most historically significant stately and mature specimens, including 10 of its highest priority and valued trees. The Weeping Beech, its oldest tree at over 120 years old, has a crown size spread of 74 feet with its enormous, shapely mound of sweeping, pendulous branches and hanging branchlets.

Pinelawn’s Weeping Beech is considered priceless.

Pinelawn’s Nikko Maple, its rarest, is a species which originated in the high mountains of Japan and its Katsura features heartshaped leaves which in the Spring, emerge as purple.

Pinelawn has multiple large Katsura trees situated in one location, which is rather uncommon.

Pinelawn’s appreciation of history can be seen in the many historical monuments featured within the park, including the Statue of Normandie and the Garden of Freedom’s Jefferson colonnade, which is

inscribed with an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence and its signers in gold leaf. The Garden of Normandie is home to the Statue of Peace, one of the largest bronze statues ever cast in modern times. The refurbished, softly glowing, ton-and-a-half bronze establishes the serene mood of the garden.

Another significant piece on the property is the John Donne Memorial which was the first monument created for Pinelawn by designer, Ismar David in 1965, who then went onto design much of Pinelawn’s park area, helping to create the beauty that Pinelawn is known for today. The Fountain of Peace, which is set within an 11-acre garden, was also designed in part by Ismar David, and resides among eight stately 40-foot tall Georgia Marble columns, discovered in Atlanta by Pinelawn where they adorned the Federal Reserve Bank for decades.

Back again by popular demand is the 3rd annual Lantern Lighting Celebration, an evening where families can

enjoy live music and a fairy-tale atmosphere consisting of string lights and candles. The event features a picnic-like setting where participants can personalize a floating lantern with heartfelt messages to their loved ones and hear their loved one’s name read aloud in a beautiful ceremony as they release their floating lantern within the Rose Garden Fountain.

“Our grounds are magnificent and continue to flourish as a result of our enduring work to preserve, protect, and take great care of the property,” said Justin Locke, President, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “Pinelawn is a haven for those seeking solace in its tranquil beauty. Even if you don't have loved ones laid to rest here, we welcome you to visit and enjoy the magnificence of our grounds."

LaLota Announces Hundreds Of Defense Jobs Coming To Suffolk County

Rep. Nick LaLota (NY01) announced that hundreds of new jobs would be coming to Suffolk County after Raytheon Technologies Corporation was awarded a contract by the federal government totaling $113,628,201. The contract will cover costs for Raytheon to develop MK 15 close-in weapon system (CIWS) upgrades and conversions, system overhauls, and associated hardware. One of the

manufacturing facilities Raytheon will use for this contract is located in Hauppauge, N.Y.

“I am thrilled that hundreds of high-paying defense manufacturing jobs will be coming to Suffolk County. As the son of a former Grumman Secretary and a Navy Veteran, I understand how important the defense industrial base is to local families and Long Island’s economy,” said LaLota.

“Now, as a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the strategic role Long Island’s defense manufacturing base plays in ensuring America’s military can deter the next conflict, or if needed, win it. I will always work to make sure that Suffolk County maintains our important role in our nation’s defense.”

Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive Returns Saturday, May 13, 2023

Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are pleased to announce the return of the annual Stamp Out Hunger®, the nation’s most extensive one-day food collection campaign. This year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive is on Saturday. May 13, 2023, and all food collected in Nassau and Suffolk counties will benefit Island Harvest in providing much-needed supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger and food insecurity, including nearly one-third who are children.

“Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest.

“Generous Long Islanders are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to their mailbox before the regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Then, your USPS letter carrier will do the rest to help

make sure that no one on Long Island goes hungry.”

Non-perishable food items to be donated include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no food or juices in glass containers). In addition, personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and disposable diapers are accepted. All goods donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in communities throughout Long Island.

“Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are in the unenviable position of choosing between paying for such things as housing, transportation, and medicine or putting food on the table,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. “I am confident that the past generosity displayed by our Long Island neighbors will help make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive one of

the most successful.”

Due to the pandemic, the Stamp Out Hunger food collection was temporarily discontinued in 2020. Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.75 billion pounds of food in all 50 states plus the District

of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands to help address the issue of hunger in America. On Long Island, Stamp Out Hunger brought in over 519,000 pounds of food in 2019 before the event was temporarily suspended from 2020 through 2022 due to the

pandemic.

“The National Association of Letter Carriers and the men and women we represent on Long Island are pleased to once again partner with Island Harvest in this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food collection,” said Tom Siesto, 1st Vice President, NALC Branch 6000. “Our carriers often see firsthand the pervasive issue of hunger as part of their daily rounds, and they are eager to help give back to the community and assist in helping Island Harvest Food Bank tackle this important issue.”

This year’s major sponsoring partners with Island Harvest on the NALC Stamp Out Hunger collection campaign include National Grid, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Amazon, Allstate, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Catholic Health, Nonna’s Garden, Long Island Federation of Labor, MCN Distributors, Dime Community Bank and New York Community Bank. All donations to Stamp Out Hunger are tax-deductible because all the food collected

benefits Island Harvest, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Insurance Tips And Information

Keeping Your Insurance Rates ReasonableAlways Be Prepared

As horribly as inflation is sucking dollars from your wallet, the Insurance Industry is being triple vexed.

• Unemployment is at an historic low and the roads are packed with cars.

• Technology is distracting drivers causing more accidents on already packed roads.

• Technological additions to cars are making repairs more expensive and delaying repair times.

• Our litigious society is rife with more and more expensive insurance claims.

Unlike the past, the industry is not just

raising premiums. Most companies are actively NOT taking on new clients. Companies are selectively choosing NOT to take on any new risk. So, what you do after an accident is extremely important to keep your premiums down and your options open.

The Boy Scout MottoAlways be Prepared…

1. Put a dash-cam in the car. Nothing will help you keep rates down better then proving you were NOT AT FAULT.

2. Some policies offer Accident Forgiveness for an added expense. In the current environment, it’s worth it. Lost discounts, higher premiums and surcharges will far outstrip the cost of this extra coverage….. for a long time.

3. Prepare ALL drivers with on instructions for ‘What to do at an Accident.’ Keep a script in the visor. Call the police. Exchange information. Don’t admit guilt. Take photos of the SCENE (not just the damage). Take note of traffic cams and/or home surveillance cams.

LIPA Announces

New Community College Scholarship

Officials from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) joined with representatives from Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College to announce a new community college scholarship program. The LIPA Scholarship is designed to provide education and training for students from households with incomes below the median income of Long Island and the Rockaways (approximately $100,000 for a family of four) living in historically underserved communities.

The LIPA Scholarship is a $350,000 commitment over the next five years to

provide 50 full scholarships for students to attend either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College to obtain an associate degree or certificate that will help them pursue a career in the electric utility or clean energy sectors. This investment is an effort to ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all of our customers can participate in the growing career opportunities available in the electric utility and clean energy industry.

Thomas Falcone, Chief Executive Officer of LIPA, said: “Electricity is the

clean fuel of the future. Studies predict electricity will provide more than 70 percent of New York’s energy needs by 2050 and that it will be entirely carbon-free.

With this growing industry, LIPA’s commitment to fund 50 scholarships at Nassau and Suffolk Community College over the next five years will ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all our customers can participate in the fabulous and growing career opportunities available in the electric sector.”

Dr. Maria Conzatti, Interim President of Nassau Community College, said: “Together with LIPA,

Nassau Community College is pleased to meet the workforce development needs of our business partners and the educational aspirations of the Long Island community.”

Dr. Edward T. Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, said: “The Long Island Power Authority’s generous scholarships will help us recruit and sustain students entering the STEM fields, transforming our workforce and our region’s economy. With this support, LIPA joins the college in bridging our promising students from financial need to the

Wellbridge, a Calvertonbased addiction treatment center, doubled the amount of patients it saw over the last year. Their personalized approach to care addresses the needs of patients entering treatment for the first time, as well as those who have been through rehabilitation previously and are seeking a more sustainable path to longterm recovery. Substance Use Disorder is a chronic, treatable illness and the Wellbridge approach examines the causes of a patient’s substance use and treats the whole person.

Struggling with substance use can be a lonely experience for patients, who are typically away from their friends and families.

That is why, in addition to a variety of evidence-

based treatments, established research, patient experience, quality metrics, and outcomes, Wellbridge employs the services of one four-legged, furry volunteer.

Oakley, a two year old English Labrador Retriever, is a certified therapy dog that has been the newest addition to the team. After completing an extensive training program that included time at assisted living facilities, hospitals and nursing homes, Oakley began her rounds at Wellbridge.

Each Saturday, Oakley and her owner, Wellbridge’s Krystal Keillor, spend hours working with groups of patients. Over the course of several 45 minute sessions, Oakley works her way around a circle of

Domestic Shorthair. Timid at first but very affectionate.

seated patients, greeting each of them, often receiving belly rubs in return.

Keillor, who is a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate at Wellbridge, relies on her canine sidekick to be there as she provides supportive services and a recovery plan for patients. The comfort that Oakley provides is palpable for staff and patients.

“The patient response has been nothing short of incredible,” said Keillor. “Patients have stated that they come to the group with anxiety, stress, and depression. When they leave a group, they feel the complete opposite expressing calmness, serenity, gratitude, hopefulness, happiness.”

When not working in a group setting, Oakley is at Keillor’s

side, supplementing therapeutic visits with her soothing presence. This is particularly important during the difficult detoxification portion of patients’ stay. Withdrawal from any substance can be painful and debilitating. Moreover, many patients are missing their own pets at home while in treatment, and Oakley serves as an able stand-in.

In spite of her youth, Oakley brings advanced experience in treatment. She has been in longterm care facilities since being eight months old, previously serving at a separate treatment center in Connecticut. When she’s not working, Oakley lives with Keillor and the rest of their family in Wading River, NY.

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the fiveyear life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need

for skilled workers, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,” Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

AARP New York was joined by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and U.S. Representative Anthony D’ Esposito for a free shredding event today in Garden City, part of a statewide series of free shredding events to prevent scammers from obtaining personal data.

AARP New York is sponsoring 27 “Fight Fraud. Shred It!” events across New York State through Saturday, June 3, 2023, to coincide with people sorting out their finances and clearing old sensitive documents after tax day.

“There’s no better time to take stock of obsolete documents with identifying information and shred them safely. We’re empowering New Yorkers to fight back against fraudsters with these popular shredding events,” said Beth Finkel, AARP New York State Director. “In the New York metro area, there were 202,205 reports of fraud in 2022, according to the Federal Trade Commission. That is not acceptable. Criminals keep getting more and more sophisticated, but we will not back down. AARP is combatting the shame and self-blame game people feel if they fall victim to scams and fraud. A good first step is to shred documents with identifying information.”

“Identity theft is all too prevalent today and can be an enormous source of stress and difficulty for New York’s families. I am pleased to join with AARP and others in spreading the word about the importance of protecting private and sensitive information. Don’t let sensitive documents fall into the wrong hands, shred them!” said New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Close to 500 people signed

up for the free shredding event in Garden City.

Crime is innovative and constantly changing. To slow it down, prevention is key. And knowledge gives individuals power over scams. AARP is also providing resources to educate consumers about fraud during the events.

AARP launched the Fraud Watch Network to arm Americans with proven tools to fight back against identity theft and scams. The AARP Fraud Watch Network equips people with reliable, up-to-date insights, and a free Fraud Network Helpline is available to help you and your loved ones.

AARP advocates at the state, federal, and local levels to enact policy changes that protect consumers and enforce laws.

Those attending the shredding events must limit materials to three bags. The events conclude when the two on-site trucks are full. The sites may close early if the trucks fill up. Paper only and no magazines, newspapers, books, or cardboard. The shredding events are being conducted with support from the AARP Fraud Watch Network and the AARP Foundation.

Here’s a spring cleaning checklist from security experts to rid your home of paper with sensitive info:

Old documents: Papers that carry your Social Security number, birthdate, signature, account numbers, passwords or PIN numbers.

Banking: Canceled or unused checks. Shred deposit slips and ATM and credit card receipts

Credit Cards: Preapproved credit card applications and incentive/gift checks from credit card companies.

Medical: Unneeded medical bills.

Investments: Investment account statements.

Obsolete ID cards:

Expired driver’s licenses, medical insurance cards and passports.

More information on how to keep yourself safe from identity theft fraud, and alerts regarding other types of scams, is available from the Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/ FraudWatchNetwork.

Shredding services are free of charge and open to the public. To find and register for a local shredding event across New York State, visit www.aarp.org/NYStopScams or call 1-866-227-7442.

Shredding services will be performed by a third party. All documents and information provided for shredding are subject to that party’s privacy and informational security policies.

Signature Premier Properties And North Shore Young Professionals Partner To Support Mental Health Awareness

Signature Premier Properties and North Shore Young Professionals (NSYP) are teaming up to host a charity event and social media challenge to raise awareness and funds for mental health causes. The event will take place on June 2nd at Napper Tandy’s in Smithtown, NY, and will feature networking, games, a casino, and an open bar.

The event is being organized by Justin Soriano, a 25-year-old real estate professional and NSYP founder, who believes in the power of networking and giving back to the community. Since its inception, NSYP has raised tens of thousands of dollars for various charities, including the Smithtown Children’s Foundation and Life’s Worc. The upcoming event will benefit James Journey, a charity that supports mental health causes and offers a scholarship program for high school seniors. James Journey is named in honor of James Audley, a young man who lost his life to struggles with mental health. The charity is close to Soriano’s heart, and he hopes to raise over $10,000 at the event to support its mission.

In addition to the charity event, Signature Premier Properties and NSYP are launching a social media challenge called #BreakTheStigma. The challenge aims to encourage people to start conversations about mental health and help raise funds for James Journey through donations. To participate, all you have to do is record a video of yourself breaking an object of your choice and share it on social media using the

hashtag #BreakTheStigma. Signature Premier Properties will donate $5 for every video up to $1000, and participants are encouraged to tag @signaturepremierproperties and @northshoreyoungprofessionals on Instagram.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with North Shore Young Professionals to support such an important cause,” said Caitlyn Morris, VP of Business Development at Signature Premier Properties. “Mental health is a critical issue that affects so many people, and we believe that by breaking the stigma and starting conversations, we can make a real difference. We encourage everyone to join us at the event and participate in the #BreakTheStigma challenge.”

The charity event and social media challenge are open to the public, and tickets for the event can be purchased online. Signature Premier Properties and NSYP are committed to making a positive impact in the community and hope to see a strong turnout for this important cause. Check out @signaturepremier on Facebook and Instagram for more information!

The curricula offered at Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College include courses relevant to the work LIPA does to meet the clean energy goals set by New York’s Climate Act, as well as to fulfill LIPA’s mission of providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Long Island and the Rockaways.

The LIPA Scholarship will support incomequalified, graduating high school seniors, allowing them to extend their educational development and enter the utility and clean energy sectors.
