LI’s Montauk Point Lighthouse Was New York’s FIRST Lighthouse & Is On National Historic Landmark Listing & Adjacent To Prized State Park & Museum First Constructed In 1796, The Site Has Become Dangerous For Visitors To The East End & Could Have Easily Been Lost To The Atlantic Ocean Without Fed Funds

The plan will remove and reuse existing five and ten-ton armor stones and add additional ones along the shore to protect the lighthouse.

The project will also help stabilize the slope of where the lighthouse stands with terracing and vegetation installation.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation has committed $15.4M to the project and the Montauk Historical Society will continue to maintain the site once the project is finished. According to the Society, more than 100,000 visitors visit the lighthouse each year, even amid the pandemic.

According to the State, In 1996, the U.S. Coast Guard transferred ownership of the historic site to the Montauk Historical Society, which now operates and owns the property.

The Montauk Historical Society is dedicated to the protection, preservation, and educational development of this nationally significant landmark and has maintained the revetment since the early 1990s. The lighthouse complex bluff is located adjacent to the Montauk Point State Park and is primarily used by fishermen, surfers, and sightseers.

“The illuminating point here is that these federal Army Corps funds made the Montauk Point Lighthouse protection project happen, and they could not come soon enough,” Schumer added. “Now, one of our great jewels shining proudly on Long Island’s coastal crown will remain in place for years to come, and it ‘shore’ is pretty.”

PSEG Long Island is preparing for the upcoming osprey breeding season by inspecting known nesting areas, performing maintenance on the osprey cams it installed last year, and cleaning out debris and garbage in the nests located near the cameras in Oyster Bay and Patchogue, N.Y. “On a recent cold, wintery day, crews visited the two osprey nests viewable via the PSEG Long Island osprey cam to clean and reinforce the cameras and remove debris from the nests,” said John O’Connell, vice president of Transmission and Distribution, PSEG Long Island. “We look forward to the return of the osprey pairs so we can all enjoy a glimpse of these majestic birds in their natural environment.”

Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us.

This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. Their mission is founded in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort, who had a commitment to the poor and the courage to do what no one else had the courage to do.

They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations.

Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility.

Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. He formed Hope House Ministries and it has grown into an amazing organization that has provided for the needs of over 500,000 individuals.

Hope House Ministries offers

many programs, such as their Community House, Hope Academy, Montfort Therapeutic Residence, Pax Christi Hospitality Center, St. Maximillian Kolbe Outpatient Addictions Treatment Center, Wisdom House and much more.

The innovative ideas of three teachers in the Amityville Union Free School District resulting in $2,000 in grant awards, which will be used to further enhance learning opportunities for students.

Amityville teachers received two out of the five Model Schools awards from Western Suffolk BOCES for their creative use of instructional technology.

Northwest Elementary School coteachers Kerrin Faulkner and Jenny Smith earned one of the $1,000 awards and Amityville Memorial High School social studies Jack Zider received the other.

Ms. Faulkner and Ms. Smith have taught second grade together for the past four years and have continued to expand the use of technology to engage their students.

Every year, students complete nonfiction writing pieces, including a research-based project on topics of their choice.

This year, the project came about right after holiday break, but with Amityville schools on remote learning for the first two weeks of January, they looked for a new way for students to complete their projects.

The teachers turned to Book Creator, an app that students could access from their Chromebooks at home. Instead of paper projects, students created digital books on topics

ranging from animals to historical events to sports.

Ms. Faulkner and Ms. Smith said the addition of the technology component raised the level of engagement among students, who worked extremely hard to create their digital books.

They were so proud of their finished products, the teachers said, they couldn’t wait to share with their classmates. All of the books were compiled into a digital book museum.

“This technology really lifted the level of their writing,” Ms. Faulkner said. “It also really opened our eyes to new possibilities for the future.”

The teachers added that in addition to helping them with their research skills, the project showed students the important of including different text and non-text features in their writing, like photos and graphics, a table of contents, a glossary and fun facts pages.

For Black History Month in February, ninth graders in Mr. Zider’s social studies classes

created a “Periodic Table of African-American Achievement in History” using Google Slides and Jamboard.

Students, working independently or in small groups, created an interactive database in which they identified the accomplishments of notable Black figures throughout history.

In addition to their Google Slide and Jamboard presentations, students created Flipgrid videos describing the impact those individuals made on society. The ninth graders explained why they chose their particular subjects and why their accomplishments should be celebrated.

The projects were uploaded to their digital portfolios on Google Sites and shared with sixth graders at Edmund W. Miles Middle School.

“It’s very exciting,” Mr. Zider said of receiving the grant, “but all of the credit goes to the students. They really made it come to life. I’m just happy that they’re being recognized for how dedicated they were to this project.”

Mr. Zider, who taught at the middle school for six years before moving to the high school this year, said that digital citizenship is an important part of social studies education He explained that the work his students do now should prepare them for the digital world they will experience after graduation, which is why he uses technology to such a great extent in his classroom.

Ms. Faulkner, Ms. Smith and Mr. Zider will be able to use the grant money to pick out instructional resources of their choosing for their classrooms to enhance opportunities for their students. They will be honored at a Model Schools virtual celebration later this year and will be invited to speak for a few minutes about their projects.
