All are invited to attend an interactive Community Meeting for the Downtown Revitalization Initiative on Tuesday, May 10th, 2022, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Park Avenue School South Gymnasium, 140 Park Avenue, Amityville, for an interactive session that invites public participation and feedback on proposed projects being considered under the grant program. “We hope the community will join in and provide feedback to help select and shape the projects we submit in July to New York State,” said Village of Amityville Mayor Dennis M. Siry. “Projects will need to align with and support the vision and goals we have developed for this initiative and be a catalyst for revitalizing our downtown,” he advised.

A Local Planning Committee meeting also will be held at on Wed., May 18th, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Amityville Fire Department, 55 W. Oak St., Amityville. This working committee meeting is open to the public but is not intended as an interactive public workshop. Attendees may offer comments at the end of the meeting.

Formally designated as a “Community Action Agency” by the federal government, it channels block grants from Washington to meet the needs of Long Islanders.

Additionally, five of their many programs offered in Suffolk County include: 1) EOC of Suffolk’s Youth and Adolescent Services, which promotes leadership, healthy decision making, sexual health and pregnancy prevention among local youth. The organization’s after-school programs serve more than 1,000 middle school students daily, providing academic and skill-building activities that promote

2) The Rapid Rehousing Program, which helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness and aims to return them as quickly as possible to permanent housing within their home communities. EOC of Suffolk team members address and troubleshoot barriers to obtaining and maintaining permanent housing.

3) EOC of Suffolk helps keep neighborhood streets safe though its SNUG (GUNS spelled backwards) Violence Prevention program, which functions in cooperation with residents, private industry and communitybased organizations. SNUG helps identify and defuse community “hot spots”. It also provides mentorship and leadership-oriented services to youth who are gang members or who are at risk of joining gangs.

4) The organization’s Targeted Prevention and Supportive Service Program supports people living with HIV/ AIDS. Clients are treated with respect, dignity, privacy and trust. Services include transportation, consumer advice, assistance obtaining benefits, linkages to substance abuse and mental health services, legal services, health education and testing.

5) Recognizing the importance of childcare for working families, EOC of Suffolk owns and operates three childcare learning centers: Way to Grow in East Patchogue, Montauk Childcare Center and a childcare center at the Family Court complex in Central Islip. Those facilities meet the highest standards of early childhood education.

Children participate in activities providing intellectual stimulation and fostering self-reliance and social responsibility.

Amityville’s Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School participated in the Safety Sally School Bus Safety Program. The program accommodates classes ranging from PreKindergarten through fifth grade with different presentations for each level.

The Mobile Safety Classroom, offered through the auspices of Eastern Suffolk BOCES, is a new, state-of-the-art school bus equipped with four TV monitors, a wheelchair lift, and a backup camera. The safety class itself is taught

by a certified teacher, appropriately named Safety Sally.

“Students had a great interactive experience learning about school bus safety and awareness,” said Dr. Shirley Martin, Principal of Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. “The average elementary student spends about 180 hours annually on a school bus and it is our responsibility to educate our students on the correct way to ride the school bus safely.”

Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), in partnership with Colored Colors, present a multilocation, self-guided tour and art exhibit throughout the Town of Babylon. Cafeinspired works created by local artists will be on view at six coffee shops from May 26, 2022 until June 26, 2022. The 2022 Cafe D’Art Tour is supported by public funding provided by Suffolk County. The development of this program was sponsored by the Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation as part of the Babylon Together project.

Artists are invited to submit up to three (3) works of art in any medium, inspired by a cafe theme, for consideration to be displayed in local cafes across the Town of Babylon.

The Benefits Of Leisure Activities Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on

cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity

as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the

study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has

the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other

activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
