Shredder Event Returns To 9/11 Park On April 27

A shredder truck will be available for use by the community on Saturday, April 27, at the 9/11 Park in Amityville. It will be there from 10 A.M. –Noon rain or shine. This park is on Broadway, near the railroad trestle, across from Peter’s Diner.

A $10 donation is requested by the sponsor, the Bay Village Civic

Association, for three bags or boxes of personal paper material to be destroyed on site. The donation, made in cash or check payable to the BVCA, will help fund scholarships to Amityville H.S. seniors.

Volunteers will assist residents unload when they arrive at the parking lot. Drivers should wait until the volunteers signal to them to proceed to the truck. This is always a well anticipated and patronized event.

Environmental Scholarships Offered

The South Shore Audubon Society is offering two $1,000 scholarships for College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in the areas of biological or environmental science. This includes wildlife management, forestry, animal behavior, ecology, marine biology, oceanography, mammalogy, ornithology or the field of sustainable and renewable energy. Previous winners have used their scholarships to help purchase

books, to pay for travel expenses to field sites, for specialized equipment or other educational needs.

Pet Partners Looking For Some Special Animals

April 30 Is National Therapy Animal Day: Consider Volunteering With Your Pet

It’s no secret animals can have a positive impact on a person’s mental and physical health. That’s why every year thousands of facilities such as libraries, schools, hospitals, assisted living, and more ask Pet Partners volunteers to bring therapy animals to visit and provide comfort to their students, residents, patients, and customers. This April 30 is a special day to recognize the beneficial role therapy dogs and other therapy animals, in partnership with their human companions, play in creating happier, healthier communities.

Unfortunately, there’s a shortage of therapy animal teams in the United States. Pet Partners is the nation’s leading registry of therapy animals, and their volunteer teams can’t fulfill all the requests they receive for therapy animal visits. The need for therapy animals has never been greater to provide comfort and support, especially after the impacts of the pandemic, economic uncertainty, and social discord in recent years. The good news is that a wide variety of species can be therapy

animals, not just dogs. Cats, equines, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mini pigs, birds, and even llamas and alpacas are eligible for registration through the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program, which makes more than three million visits a year.

“An animal’s temperament is what determines whether they might make a good registered therapy animal with Pet Partners, not any specific species or breed,” said Pet Partners President and CEO C. Annie Peters. “Many of our therapy animals are rescue pets, and they assist everyone from veterans with PTSD, seniors living with Alzheimer’s, students with literacy challenges, patients in recovery, and people with intellectual disabilities. We couldn’t be more grateful for all that our volunteer therapy teams do for people in need around the world.”

Therapy animals have a special aptitude for interacting with members of the public and enjoy doing so. Therapy animal handlers have a strong trust-based bond with their pet and facilitate interactions that benefit all involved. The

handler-animal pair takes part in an extensive evaluation process to make sure they will be successful with people in a variety of circumstances. We have experts available to talk about the value therapy animals bring to communities, what behaviors a pet should exhibit, how the process works and more. We also have therapy animal handlers all across the United States who would love to talk about the joys of volunteering with their pets.

Pet Partners is also specifically seeking more cats and handlers to become registered volunteer teams. In partnership with Cat Person, a cat care brand, a research study on the Cat Human Bond found that cats can provide a special form of comfort that dogs cannot. Special incentives are also being offered for new cat teams.

Pet Food Drive For Baxter’s Pet Pantry

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May.

Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 13th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares.org). In

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets.

Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. Funding Flows Into North Amityville Clean Water Project Senator Martinez Announces Grant For Drinking Water Improvements, Including In The Fourth Senatorial District

New York State will fund the construction of a new Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) system to remove 1,4-dioxane from groundwater at the Suffolk County Water Authority’s Albany Avenue well field located in North Amityville. The project is one of three being supported in Suffolk County through a $4.5 million grant from the Water Infrastructure Improvement (WIIA) program intended to improve the state’s drinking water quality.

“Funding being provided through this grant will allow the Suffolk County Water Authority to wash clean of the emerging contaminants being found in our drinking water,” said

State Senator Monica R. Martinez. “Investments in clean water infrastructure are critical to removing the toxins that threaten Long Island’s water resources and ensure the continued safety of our region’s drinking water supply.”

Also selected for funding is the adjacent Village of Farmingdale, which will receive a $3 million grant for the installation of an AOP treatment system for the removal of 1,4-dioxane and a Granular Activated Carbon treatment system for the removal of PFOA and PFOS.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has classified Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS), which

include PFOA and PFOS, as human carcinogens, and 1,4-dioxane as a likely human carcinogen.

WIIA program grants are administered by the state’s Environmental Facilities Corporation and assist municipalities in funding critical wastewater and drinking water infrastructure projects. In January, Senator Martinez and the state announced an additional $325 million in competitive grants for clean water infrastructure projects were being made available through the latest round of funding. The deadline for municipalities to apply is 5 p.m. on June 14, 2024, through the EFC’s website EFC. NY.GOV.
