Councilman McSweeney Partners With The American Red Cross To Save Lives
When Councilman Terrence McSweeney first took office in 2018, his motivation was not politics, his motivation was leaving this town a better place than how he found it. McSweeney said, “As a New York City Firefighter for 19 years and Volunteer Firefighter for 23 years, public service runs in my blood.”
Fast forward to today, McSweeney is all things public safety. Last year he partnered with the American Red Cross to
offer free of charge to every home, sufficient coverage of smoke detectors for the entire home. The program was successful but not as much as he would have liked. This year, with what seems to be Covid-19 deep in the rearview mirror he said the program has been much more successful, keeping the American Red Cross busy and both partners in this program couldn’t be happier. “Day in and day out, it is the Town board’s mission to keep our residents safe. Smoke
detectors save lives by providing an early warning sign that something is wrong. According to the national fire protection Association, 50% of all fires occur when people are sleeping.” McSweeney added if you are looking to have smoke detectors installed free of charge call his office at 631-957-3081. Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.
Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”
RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.
Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then
get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?
•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.
•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.
•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.
•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

Long Island Cars will present their “Super Swap Sunday” Car Show and Swap Meet on Sunday April 16th at Flowerfield Fairgrounds off Route 25A in Saint James. Flowerfield Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with
classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, oneof-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, street rods, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will be competing in classed judging with trophies. The event

Shredder Event Returns To 9/11 Parking Lot
On Saturday, April 15, the Bay Village Civic Association invites the residents and neighbors of Amityville to a community Shredder Event. For a donation of $10 to the BVCA, three bags or boxes of personal material will be shred on site. A truck from Secure Shred will be at the 9/11 Parking Lot on Broadway, south of the RR trestle, from 10 A.M. – Noon. Employees of Secure Shred will help you remove your materials from your
car. BVCA members will collect your donations. These donations will assist the civic association in funding scholarships and community projects. Past projects include Village entranceway signs and a pergola at the Dog Park at the Village Beach. Have your personal information and documents securely destroyed. The Town Of Babylon Hosts The Wall That Heals Exhibit Helps Spread The Healing Legacy Of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Town of Babylon will proudly host the traveling exhibit The Wall That Heals from October 5 to 8, 2023 at Tanner Park. A 375-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., the traveling exhibit pays tribute to over three million Americans who served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. Similar to the exhibit, a smaller replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall drew thousands to Town Hall back in 1995.
“When we talked about doing this again, it was a nobrainer,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.
“We are grateful to have the opportunity to support our veterans in this meaningful manner and provide access to a powerful monument to all in our community. We would like to especially thank Charles Spencer for his instrumental role in bringing this exhibit to the Town.”
The Wall That Heals spreads the healing legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.. This exhibit aids thousands of veterans in their healing process, empowering them to encounter The Wall in the familiarity of their own communities and emboldening their strength and courage. It also serves as an important source of peace for family and friends of veterans and
learning tool for others in the community.
“It is an honor to host The Wall That Heals,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “I believe it will truly have a profound impact on our residents and encourage all to engage with this important exhibit.”

Future Teachers Meet With Elementary School Students

The High School Heroes program, sponsored by Junior Achievement of New York, pairs students from Amityville Memorial High School with elementary school students in the district for lessons on careers, community, financial literacy and government.
This year, Junior Achievement partnered with the Future Teachers of Tomorrow Club. The club’s adviser, Ms. Melissa Roberts, is an alumna of the Amityville School District. This club was designed to inspire and prepare promising students for careers in education. This event is one of the many activities planned for the club which will include mentoring, shadowing and partnering with higher education. Dr. Bridgette Waite, the district’s assistant superintendent of human resources, has met with the students and is very excited that this program has gotten off the ground. This program aligns with her vision of getting some of Amityville’s students back into the classroom as teachers.
High school students are trained by Junior Achievement and then plan and implement lessons in the classrooms. The Future Teachers of Tomorrow recently visited six fifth grade classes at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. Guidance counselor Ms. Kim Balducci was responsible for arranging the classroom teachers with the high school students. Ava Tucciaroone, a high school senior, has participated in the program for the past two years.
“I enjoyed working with the children and I’ve considered becoming an art teacher thanks to the program,” Tucciaroone said. “I felt like it was just a terrific experience in every way.”
Junior Khaeil Pryce said he wasn’t sure what career he would pursue before this program. “After working with the children at Park Avenue, I’ve become more interested in a career in education,” Pryce said.
“I was surprised to see how excited the students were to learn and how much they actually wanted to participate,” said junior Kristen Preza.
Many of the high school students who participate are interested in careers in education or childcare, and hope to gain valuable experience that helps them decide if they would like to further pursue those areas.
“I’ve gained more respect for teachers after this experience,” said senior Kenneth Garcia. “I learned that as a teacher, you really have to be flexible and adjust your lesson or have a backup if things don’t go as originally planned.”
“At first, I was nervous about teaching the fifth graders, because I didn’t know what to expect,” said junior Sere Diallo. “I realized that once you actually start the lesson, you get more comfortable. After teaching the class, I realized that it was easier than I thought, and I felt much more confident.”
The high school’s participants interact directly with children in facilitating hands-on activities which engage youngsters in learning about business and economic concepts. The Future Teachers of Tomorrow are preparing to visit Park Avenue again this spring.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness
Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received
surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.
The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.
