South Oaks Hospital, Splashes Of Hope

And The New York Islanders Children’s Foundation Team Up For Mental Health Awareness

South Oaks Hospital is transforming from “clinical to colorful” thanks to a donation of paintings from Splashes of Hope and the New York Islanders Children’s Foundation. In total, four bespoke window scenes, two hand-painted ceiling tiles and a border declaring “Hope Grows Here” were designed in collaboration between Splashes of Hope and South Oaks staff. The donation to South Oaks was made on March 22.

“At South Oaks Hospital we treat the whole patient and understand that those in need of behavioral health care represent every group – they’re our family members, friends, colleagues and neighbors,” said Michael Scarpelli, executive director of South Oaks Hospital. “Artwork like this is an integral part in the recovery of our patients, as it gives them hope while they are in our care. I am extremely grateful to Splashes of Hope and the New York Islanders

Children’s Foundation for their time, dedication and effort to making paintings come to life.”

On January 16, Splashes of Hope artists outlined the murals and Islanders fans painted in the lines at an interactive mural-making community service activity at UBS Arena, home of the New York Islanders.

“On behalf of Splashes of Hope, we appreciate the support of the New York Islanders Children’s Foundation for their dedication to Mental Health Awareness,” said Heather J. Buggee, founder and CEO of Splashes of Hope. “Their sponsorship of the ‘Painting for A Purpose’ activity at UBS Arena gave fans the unique opportunity to help our Splash Team paint these uplifting murals for patients and staff at Northwell Health. Who would have thought Islanders fans would turn out to be such enthusiastic, talented artists?”

The whole idea got

underway when the South Oaks Child Life Department reached out to Splashes of Hope last year to brighten the hospital with bespoke artwork to uplift and engage patients. South Oaks was added to Splashes’ waiting list, and when the New York Islanders asked about making a “splash” for their Mental Health Awareness night, the project gained momentum.

“The Islanders are proud to partner with Splashes of Hope as we support mental health awareness,’’ said Ann Rina, the Islanders’ executive director of Community Relations. “We hope this painting put together with our fans brings comfort to those in need at South Oaks Hospital.”

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.

In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.

Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.

“I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and

smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)

2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.

3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. Outdoor Stations Of The Cross – 1.5 Mile Walking Service – Offered By Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island At Cemetery Of The Holy Rood On Good Friday

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island welcomes the Catholic faithful across Long Island to participate in its Stations of the Cross prayer service at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury this Good Friday, April 7th. This prayer service, which is one of the largest attended events at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island each year, is celebrated annually on Good Friday, one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar. During the prayer service, the Catholic faithful will follow a 1.5 mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees.

Hundreds of Catholics are expected to take part in the Good Friday services at the

Cemetery of the Holy Rood.

Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with selfdirected tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.

Faithful utilizing the self-directed option who are walking the Stations of the Cross on their own can download the Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Stations of the Cross Prayer Booklet as a guide with specific prayers at each station:

Stations of the Cross Prayers – Easy Print Format Prayer booklets may also be picked up at Holy Rood Chapel. The Cemetery of the Holy Rood, located at 111 Old Country Road in Westbury, is open every day from 8 a.m.

to 5 p.m., with the Chapel closing at 4:30 p.m. daily.

Athletes, Varsity Basketball Coach Honored

The Amityville School District’s Board of Education recognized several student-athletes during a recent board meeting.

The board also honored Amityville Memorial High School Warriors varsity basketball head coach Jack Agostino, who earned his 500th career win. The Warriors’ 57-53 victory over John Glenn High School also clinched a playoff berth for the team.

“I feel like this community absolutely raised me as a person, as a coach, and as a husband,” Mr. Agostino said. “My whole life I’ve been surrounded by good people from Amityville. The Amityville community is just a great place to work. I hope everybody really appreciates what goes on here. There’s a lot of good people who work extremely hard to do what’s best for our kids.”

Junior and varsity basketball player Christian Smiley was recognized by the board for being named to Newsday’s Top 100 Long Island boys basketball players for the 20222023 season. Christian was honored for his scoring ability, his incredible athleticism, and his versality to play all five positions.

“It’s been such a pleasure to have Maddy on the team,” said Warriors varsity wrestling head coach Jamal Jackson. “She’s been a great addition to our team, she’s always up for the challenge and she really encourages the rest of our team to do their best on the mat.”
