New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez is welcoming the opening of a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Babylon. The center is located at Babylon Town Hall and will assist constituents from across the Fourth Senatorial District who suffered losses as a result of the January 9-10, 2024 storm that impacted the region with heavy rain, high winds, and coastal flooding.

Representatives of the SBA will assist eligible residents and businesses in Suffolk and Nassau Counties who suffered economic losses as a result of the storm to apply for low-interest loans. Those who can apply include businesses, homeowners, renters, and private nonprofit organizations. They must be in a declared disaster area and meet other eligibility criteria depending on the type of loan. The types of disaster loans available are:

• Business Physical Disaster Loans – Loans to businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by the business, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery, and equipment. Businesses of any size are eligible. Private, non-profit organizations such as charities, churches, private universities, etc., are also eligible.

• Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL)

– Working capital loans to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, non-profit organizations of all sizes meet their ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster.

• Home Disaster Loans

– Loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, including automobiles.

“Picking up the pieces after a natural disaster can be overwhelming. I thank Governor Hochul for coordinating with our federal partners to get support to the Long Island region and the Small Business Administration for recognizing the severity of this event and for being there to help our neighbors find the resources to recover after its devastation,” said Senator Martinez.

The Babylon Town Hall Disaster Loan Outreach Center is located at 200 Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst and will open to the public.

The site’s hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is May 10, 2024, and December 11, 2024, for economic injury applications.

Town Board Members Participate In “Love A Book Week”

Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney and Anthony Manetta recently participated in Northeast Elementary Schools’ “Love a Book Week” by visiting classes, sharing their favorite books, and reading

to the students.

Councilman McSweeney read “I Can Fly” while Councilman Manetta read “Happy Pig Day” both by Mo Williams.

In a joint statement, McSweeney and Manetta emphasized the importance

of reading to children at an early age, highlighting the benefits of boosting brain development, strengthening bonds, and fostering empathy and emotional intelligence through books.

Liam Michael Kieran’s Eagle Scout Court Of Honor

EAGLE SCOUT COURT OF HONOR

- Liam Kieran, a resident of Deer Park and a member of Troop 399, was recently congratulated by the Town of Babylon for his achievement of becoming an Eagle Scout. His project involved the construction of a 100’ “Caterpillar Tunnel” at Homecoming Farms in Amityville. This project has multiple benefits such as warming the soil, extending the growing season, and protecting plants from various elements. Town and county officials commented that becoming an Eagle Scout is significant because it entails hard work, dedication, and service to others. It provides teenagers with a goal to strive for and instills qualities such as confidence, leadership, and a sense of commitment to the community. These skills are valuable and transferable to college, career, and adulthood. The Town Board would like to congratulate Liam and everyone who contributed to Troop 399. Environmental Scholarships Offered

The South Shore Audubon Society is offering two $1,000 scholarships for College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in the areas of biological or environmental science. This includes wildlife management, forestry, animal behavior, ecology, marine biology, oceanography, mammalogy, ornithology or the field of sustainable and renewable energy. Previous winners have used their scholarships to help purchase books, to

pay for travel expenses to field sites, for specialized equipment or other educational needs.

To be eligible for the Scholarships, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County. One scholarship is funded by Evelyn Bishop and her family, and one is funded by Jay Koolpix

The Town of Babylon is pleased to announce that a shoreline stabilization capital improvement project is currently underway at Tanner Park in Copiague. Spearheaded by Deputy Supervisor and Parks Chairman, Tony Martinez, the project aims to safeguard the coastline.

The scope of work involves the construction of approximately 386 linear feet of rock revetment, installation of approximately 412 feet of coir logs, and backfilling and planting with native vegetation. This comprehensive approach not only fortifies the shoreline

Black History Month Celebration

Pre-K and kindergarten students at Northeast Elementary School in Amityville held an amazing performance in front of their parents during the school’s annual Black History Month program on Feb. 16.

Directed by music teacher Megan Ashe, students and staff members performed a medley of songs in the school’s gymnasium such as “This Little Light of Mine,” “Peace Like a River,” and “Scat Like That.” The gymnasium also featured a decorative art showcase that was organized by art teacher Nicole Pappas.

The performance concluded with an African dance from special guest Dianne Robinson.

but also contributes to the preservation of local ecology.

“The Tanner Park shoreline stabilization project marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to protect our coastal assets and recreational areas,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. “By addressing the

erosion issues exacerbated by events like recent coastal storms, we are ensuring the long-term resilience of our waterfront areas.”

The necessity for this project arose from the erosion that began to undermine the shoreline, particularly evident after Hurricane Sandy. This

erosion also impacted the entrance to the Howell Creek canal near Tanner Park Marina. With Suffolk County’s dredging of the channel in 2022, the urgency to stabilize the area became paramount to prevent further erosion and protect vital infrastructure within Tanner Park.

The Town of Babylon remains committed to proactive measures that prioritize environmental sustainability and community resilience along our south shore. Completion of the Tanner Park shoreline stabilization project is anticipated in the next few weeks.

Kreuder was the playby-play commentator for the Amityville girls basketball game against Islip. High school teachers Paul Cimmino and Matt Greiss have coordinated the broadcasting club in Amityville since 2017, and they livestream to their YouTube channel called the Amityville Broadcasting Network. The club teaches students all aspects of what goes into having a professional broadcast including audio/ video production, sound engineering, directing, producing, sideline reporters, talk show hosts and panelists, analysts, and play-by-play announcer.

“In the professional world, it is a maledominated profession, and female sports play-byplay commentators are extremely rare,” Mr. Greiss said. “In our club, we have had only six male students reach the level of play-byplay since we started our club. Erin did a tremendous job last month. As a junior, she has now established herself as our top on-air person and has another full year to shine.”

The Amityville School District congratulates Kreuder on making school history as a female sports broadcaster.
